The article asks about the place given to culture and knowledge and its relationship with the hegemonic role of nation statuses in the context of contemporary global capitalism. To this end, it analyses the traditional conceptions of culture and the need for a critical reconceptualisation of culture. It also refers to the location and importance of knowledge and ideology as part of the globalised capitalist production system. Against this background, the author wonders whether that cultural relocation and the centrality of knowledge have effectively transformed capitalist accumulation processes. He also wondered about the loss of hegemony of nation countries in view of the current processes of economic and cultural transnationalisation. In the final part of the article, an answer to the initial question is sought by attempting to articulate the contemporary discussion that favours ideological and symbolic mechanisms of domination and cultural subalterance with the class domination that remains inside the nation states. This, moreover, from the need for social sciences to regain their critical and transformative view of reality.
These rock engravings, together with those found in more northerly regions, bear witness to wide-spread phenomena which cannot be detected by archaeological digs : the mobility of pastoralists during early Neolithic, the transmission of ideas and of luxury goods over long distances at the beginning of the Metal age, Touaregs settling in the south of the Sahara as from the IVth century A.D. Furthermore, several particular representations of metallic objects in the Adrar des Iforas region seem to indicate the presence of local metallurgical production as from the IInd Millenium B.C. for which archaeological excavations may be able to discover remains. And furthermore, hundreds of representations of armed warriors with spears show the hierarchical organisation of society during the Ist Millenium B.C., which would seem to correlate with what we already know about the political organisation and defense strategies present in different West African regions at this time.

The Glasgow Jewish Institute Players was an innovative community theatre group whose work explored the many facets of Jewish identity in inter- and post-war Britain. This essay provides an overview of the company's production history and repertoire, including plays by its inspirational founder, the playwright and director Avrom Greenbaum (1903–1963). It argues that the group's output reflected the identities and self-image of a Glasgow Jewish community that was seeking to consolidate and rationalise its place in Scottish and British society in the inter- and post-war periods.

This paper analyses how precision has become a ubiquitous prefix in medicine, agriculture and education. The accompanying imagination in each of these domains is that "data" will enable greater predictive accuracy through new sensors and interfaces. In this paper, we aim to provide insights regarding the ways in which precision assemblages function to augment and extend existing knowledge and data infrastructures, while also being underpinned by the anticipatory promise of the ubiquity of digital and sensing technologies. We argue that precision is marked by new data production and aggregation frameworks to measure and intervene. At the same time, precision draws on–and augments–established clinical, agricultural and educational subjectivities in ways that depict new logics of patient, student and environmental care. As we outline below, the threshold of the shift to precision is articulated and institutionalized at different points in each field we analyse in the subsequent sections of this paper–namely medicine, agriculture and education. This suggests that precision should be understood as an unevenly realized moment in policy development, rather than as simply produced through processes of technological change.
International audience ; Defined as a musical genre from Veracruz (Mexico) and as the product of various cultural universes (Spanish, African, Indigenous) intermingling, the son jarocho was regarded for a long time as one of the constitutive components of the Mexican cultural heritage. At the beginning of the 1970's, some musicians and university teaching staff started to question the commercial and folklorish drifts of this practice, giving rise to the "jaranero movement" (because of the central use of the jarana, small guitar of Spanish origin). This movement had contributed to the emergence of a patrimonial discourse referring to a mythical past: the fandangos, traditional festivals in and by which the common collective memory is transmitted. From the years 1990-2000, collaboration between the new generation of Veracruz musicians and the Chicano movement in the United States will multiplied the proposals for a common memory production and developed a social and political activism linked to the Zapatist movement. This process constitutes one of the challenges of the patrimonialization of a practice, which is spread from now in a transnational social field. Professional (i.e. extra-academic) contract archaeology is an internationally widespread practice contributing significantly to the archaeological literature. However, professional knowledge production in archaeology, and most notably the professional report genre, is at times described as problematic. The problem descriptions are ambiguous and can be grouped under at least three different topics: concerns for content quality and practical accessibility, concerns for the comparably low degree of analytical and theoretical synthesizing in reports and concerns for lack of mutual knowledge transfer between academic archaeologists and professional archaeologists. Technical issues of access are to an increasing extent being solved. Format standardizations are also developing. Hence the report genre becomes more accessible, and the content more readable and informative. Yet articulations of attitudes toward the genre in archaeology text books and journal articles remain focused on the genre's problems. The aim of my ongoing dissertation research is to nuance the understanding of the professional report genre in archaeology. I do so by analyzing factors shaping reporting as it takes place in the intersection between academic norms, professional values and market logics. I argue an improved genre understanding is crucial to diminish cultural issues of access to the report literature, and also as a basis for development of reporting practices. In1the dissertation research I analyze (1) perceptions about the report genre in archaeology literature, (2) information policy regulating reporting in archaeology, (3) how report writers and county board professionals interpret the reporting and report auditing work tasks and (4) the frames of reference report writers bring into reporting. The aim of this paper is to explicate the research design consisting of four sub-studies, to briefly report on findings from study no. 4, and to discuss preliminary, partial results from study no. 2. ; ARKDIS
Abstract:Considering gendered identity as something restrictive, and consequently, hardly reducible to a unique discourse, we will approach the body with a similar perspective. If we move toward to the recent analysis made from the academia we will find out an extended consideration on its physical boundaries: those which once reduced us to a coherent, limited and hermetic unity have been refuted for their suspicious consistence, and, that way, our bodies have been getting each time more permeable, penetrable and opened to relations and affects. Following this change of paradigm, our intention is to see how these considerations have been thought in some cultural productions, focusing on the corporal representations of the graphic novel Black Hole (Burns, 2005). Therefore, we will analize basically the illness that affects these bodies, bringing into focus, in first place, their ways of contagion. Througout our developement we will dialogue with concepts such erotism (G. Bataille) and transcorporality (M.Segarra), with the objective of studying how the contact which implies the contagion denies the idea of a unitary and hermetic body. In second place, we will analize some of the mutations resulting from this illness, arguing that they contribute to reterritorialize the body by rewritting the map with whom we read it, by the appearance or loss of organs, contrasting this process with the concept of the body without organs (G. Deleuze and F. Guattari). Finally, we will confirm our hypotesis that we had been trying to develop all along the text: that the illness that affects these bodies works producing a new narration not only of their boundaries but also of the functions atributed to its members, destabilizing both their gendered construction and pointing to a transcorporal horizon. Keywords: Body, transcorporality, erotism, graphic novel, Black Hole.
Introduction: Aiming to provide a theoretical introduction that further informs the analyses conducted in subsequent chapters, this chapter will review the synergies operating among the different conceptualizations of vulnerability and various well-established theories that explore the materiality of the body and its affects from multifold viewpoints. Divided into three sections, the first explores some of the most salient critical proposals related to vulnerability and the body by manifesting the semantic multiplicity that applies to these terms. This is a necessary step to sketch an operational frame in which to contextualize the literary and filmic research endeavor of the collection. The second section ponders on the ethical and aesthetic features that make possible the integration of complementary and competing configurations of vulnerability in the production of literary texts and audiovisual productions and explores its salient elements that place literature and film as a privileged sites of expansion, critical reflection, and challenge of vulnerability both as a universal condition as well as a particular and specific manifestation in historical, geopolitical, social, and cultural and natural dimensions. Finally, the chapter closes with a brief description of the twelve essays collected in the volume by discussing their organizational logics and their distinct contribution to it.
