This book offers the concept of rhetorical citizenship as a meeting ground for the burgeoning community of scholars interested in rhetoric's place in society. It brings together contributions from several disciplinary traditions in communication studies and neighbouring fields. The concept of rhetorical citizenship highlights the discursive, processual, and participatory aspects of civic life. It builds on the ancient idea that rhetoric is what makes civilized society possible; citizenship is in large part discursively based. Legal rights, privileges and material conditions are not the only constituents of citizenship; discourse between citizens is arguably the basis of what it means to be a citizen.0
Frailty represents an important challenge for aging populations. As a concept it is full of 'known unknowns' such as which mechanisms lead to frailty and how it is best managed. In order to examine these circumstances, the new science of understanding and managing frailty requires an appropriate framing of the problem. This publication investigates the biology and management of frailty and its social aspects. It considers these and related questions: How can we recognize frailty? How does an understanding of frailty increase our comprehension of the aging process? What are its implications for health care systems, including primary care, hospitals and rehabilitation? How will a growing number of frail older adults affect society more generally? The book focuses on frailty as a state of vulnerability, which is related to aging, but which can occur across the life course, and aims to improve the life of frail people and those around them. The book is highly recommended to researchers in aging, health science researchers, health care professionals and anyone interested in the understanding of the aging process

The idea of the paper is to demonstrate different aspects of the "dark" which occur as a central concept in two novels written by the Serbian writer David Albahari (Dark) and his colleague from the USA, Paul Auster (Man in the Dark). In the introductory part of the paper the two writers are presented, with the emphasis on various similarities which exist between them. The central part of the paper contains the overview of both novels, as well as the comparative analysis of the conceptual use and aspects of the "dark" in each novel. The "dark" is visible at three levels, where the first level marks the lives of the narrators of the two novels as they tell their stories, the second is related to the political situations in the narrators' (and writers') countries, while the third level refers to the personal losses (death of loved ones) which characterise the lives of the narrators of both novels and determine their fates in many ways. The final part of the paper investigates the "dark" while treating both novels together and partially relying on the trauma theory. Conclusions are given in the final part of the paper.
"Disease and society have historically had an uneasy relationship. Society's developments (e.g., global travel, crowded cities, concerts and events with large attendance) shape whether a virus can take hold and spread. And, a virus can bring society to a halt, as it did in the early days of the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic. This reciprocal relationship between disease and society prompted the call to action that underlies this book. This introductory chapter outlines both the importance of studying the pandemic from a social science perspective and the challenges that await social scientists who have and will study how society and the pandemic influence each other"--
"A leading researcher explores digital disparity and the pandemic and asks: how did people of different backgrounds use digital media to negotiate the challenges of isolation, unemployment, home schooling, remote work, and COVID-19 itself? And how did digital technology intersect with existing social and economic disparities? Although it is undeniable that technologies helped facilitate numerous important activities during lockdown, needing to be tethered constantly to digital media has not worked out equally well for everyone"--

Purpose. This article clarifies the significance of the person's social self-identification as a basis for civilization and institutional explanation of national self-identification in Ukraine. Theoretical basis. The authors found that the analysis of the cultural and anthropological principles of national self-identity reveals two main opposed concepts: the concept of "eastern" cultural and social self-identity of Ukraine, which correlates with the metaphor of the split between "East" and "West", and the concept of "western" projection of the European future of Ukraine, which correlates with the metaphor of the bridge between "East" and "West". These concepts reflect the options for the citizens of Ukraine to make a personal choice of the way in achieving social self-identity. Douglas North's concept of "open-access order" states and "limited access order" states can be used as a basis for an alternative, pragmatic approach to choice the criteria of national self-identity. Originality. National self-identification is a result of the choice of the person's self-identification: still the person takes into account the history of the nation, the ethnic diversity of the nation, its cultural and civilizational characteristics. The philosophical-anthropological approach contributes to the demystification of the grounds of social self-identification, revealing the decisive role of the personal choice in shaping the new institutional foundations of national self-identity. Harmonization of the social institutions of Ukraine with the institutions of the European Union and the international community institutions opens wide opportunities for Ukraine's successful integration into the "open-access order" societies. The clarification of the value and symbolic aspects of national self-identity in Ukraine contributes to the successful functioning of these institutions. Multilingualism is an adequate response to the global challenge of the reconstruction of Ukraine's national self-identity. The education system is a key area for introducing multilingualism. Conclusions. The development, justification and systematization of cultural and institutional criteria for choosing the best ways to strengthen of national self-identity in Ukraine are a prerequisite for the successful self-identification of Ukrainian citizens in a complex and ever-changing global world.
