A wide-ranging and multi-disciplinary discussion of the connections between language, borders and identities. Identifying and examining political, socio-psychological and symbolic borders, Language, Borders and Identity encompasses a broad, geographically diverse spectrum of border contexts, taking a multi-disciplinary approach by combining sociolinguistics research with human geography, anthropology and social psychology. The book illustrates a representative range of methodological approaches used by researchers in the field and examines regional and local borders alongside the political borders that divide monoglossic and heteroglossic territories. Using international case studies and examples throughout, this book also looks to symbolic borders, which are often encoded in the semiotic manipulation of the linguistic landscape. It further assesses the linguistic implications of the presence of borders in applied contexts, including language planning and policy (e.g. in multilingual education or for the protection of minority languages) and border control. By casting its net wide, Language, Borders and Identity develops and refines models of how language is used to construct borders, and to indicate on which side of border speakers situate themselves. This book brings into focus the dual reactive and proactive functions that language serves in this respect, exploring the tensions between essentialist and constructionist approaches to identity, and offers a valuable resource for advanced students and researchers in sociolinguistics and the sociology of language. Covers political, socio-psychological and symbolic borders Takes a multi-disciplinary approach by combining sociolinguistic research with human geography, anthropology and social psychology Uses international case studies and examples throughout
This book highlights how the practical skills of the police officer can be transferred into the realm of academic research and support them in becoming part of the evidence-based policing movement. It starts by exploring the professionalisation of the police service through higher education accreditation and the different methodologies of social research practice. Using operational comparisons and a little humour, it guides the reader through the swamp of concepts and processes, such as ethical approval, research paradigms and data gathering and analysis. It then takes them on a journey of reflection and reflexivity, challenging their own perspective on policing and working within the wider criminal justice sector and how they can make a valuable contribution to the development of policing practice. Anne Eason, DCrimJ is Associate Head of Dept. Policing at the University of the West of England, UK, overseeing the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship. A former Senior Probation Officer, her operational expertise and research interests are in multi-agency working, risk assessment and management, decision-making and police education.

Urgency asks us to transform our cities and re-embed them into soil, water and living organisms to safeguard our planet's resources and restore biodiversity. This book introduces the symbiotic city: a future urban landscape that creates beneficial relationships between humans and nature. The symbiotic city is a narrative of hope, that re-creates biodiversity and promotes social equity, inclusion, and environmental justice. The chapters introduce cities that are already evolving to becoming more symbiotic. The cities and metropolitan areas described in this book show initiatives that invite the voices of nature to re-enter the urban realm. The cases advocate diverse values of nature, such as nature-based solutions, personal and communal values of nature and the intrinsic rights of nature. They give the reader insights in epistemological, governance, and action-oriented solutions to work towards the symbiotic city. The book provides strategic and practical guidelines for urbanites from any background. We welcome our readers to actively join the exciting journey toward future cities and metropolitan areas where all voices are heard, human and non-human.

Published in 1999, Creative Governance sets out to develop new ideas on the development of Fisheries in Europe. The scholarly and political attention for fisheries in general within Europe is predominantly focused on problems of controlling catch. In this book it is not the problems of harvesting which are taken as the starting point, but opportunities in fisheries as a whole: catch, processing, market and consumption of fish and fish products. The discussion is broadened to include the management of fisheries from the perspective of governance rather than management or policy. Governance is a new and important concept currently being developed in several areas of social science, in this book the governance concept is related to the creation of new opportunities of fisheries in Europe. The combination of these two approaches is not only important for fisheries (in Europe) but also to the governance of natural resources more generally where the shift from a problem to an opportunity and from a management or a governance approach might shed new light and stimulate new actions. The book is the product of close cooperation between scholars from biological, geographical, political science, management studies and anthropological backgrounds.
This book describes how local consumption, particularly in urban areas, is increasingly met by global supply chains. These supply chains often extend over large geographical distances and have greater global environmental impacts, contributing to pollution, climate change, water scarcity, and deforestation. As consumption is increasingly met by globalized supply chains, causing social, economic, and environmental impacts elsewhere, consumption decisions can unknowingly contribute and reinforce global inequality and exploitation. To account for the impacts of consumption and distribution of wealth we need to analyze global supply and value chains. In this volume, the authors provide an overview of key methods of analysis, including Multi-Regional Input-Output analysis and Life Cycle Assessment. Subsequent chapters connect local consumption to the global consequences of different environmental issues, such as water and land use and stress, greenhouse gases emissions, and other forms of air pollution. Each issue is addressed in an individual chapter, including case studies from China, U.S. and UK. The book will be key reading for students taking courses in environmental sciences, sustainability sciences, ecological economies, and geography.

Plagiarism is probably the most problematic aspect of contemporary academic ethics. Online access to scientific materials has simplified the work of researchers in some ways, but has also complicated things by making the plagiarism easier. Nowadays, the copying of ideas, expressions or discoveries of other authors from the internet without proper quotation is only a click away. Anti-plagiarism software was designed to combat these misconducts. Even though the anti-plagiarism software helps eliminating illegal appropriation of ideas, expressions, discoveries etc, it has limitation. The subject of the present paper is to present and analyse these limitations, such as taking scientific materials from old books that are not uploaded on the internet, books and articles published in foreign languages and so on.
After so much debate over the last couple of years on IVF, one cannot say the final word has been said. We have certainly driven ourselves into a cul de sac especially when authorities made relevant statements effectively halting the debate. Yet parliament still has an obligation to regulate a technology, which has been introduced into the country. Shying away certainly does no good; neither does deviating arguments only to issues on the status of the embryo. Admittedly, the failure of discussions on IVF have centred mostly around concerns for the embryo. One columnist asserted it was about 'embryocide', making allegations that we are not being charitable to the truth. Whilst embryocide is certainly a concern, it is not the main issue in IVF. Embryocide, if it occurs, can be stopped. The main problem is a conflicting issue between a morality of a cherished institution and the decision-making responsibility of our parliamentarians, who unfortunately did not engage in a fruitful discussion on how to legislate, other than a report made by the Parliamentary Committee for Social Affairs. ; N/A
Economic theory and a growing body of empirical research support the idea that economic freedom is an important ingredient to long-run economic prosperity. However, the determinants of economic freedom are much less understood than the benefits that freedom provides. Economic Freedom and Prosperity addresses this major gap in our knowledge. If private property and economic freedom are essential for achieving and maintaining a high standard of living, it is crucial to understand how improvements in these areas have been achieved andwhether there are lessons that can be replicated in less free areas of the world today. In this edited collection, contributors investigate this research question through multiple methodologies. Beginning with three chapters that theoretically explore ways in which economic freedom might be better achieved, it then moves on to a series of empirical chapters that examine questions including the speed and permanence of reform, the deep long-run determinants of economic freedom, the relationship between voice and exit in impacting freedom, the role of crises in generating change, and immigration. Finally, the book considers the evolution of freedom in China, development economics, andinternational trade, and it concludes with a consideration of what is necessary to promote a humane liberalism consistent with economic freedom. Economic Freedom and Prosperity will be of great interest to all social scientists concerned with issues of institutional change. It will particularly appeal to those concerned with economic development and the determinants of an environment of economic freedom.
Green Economy is a key theme of the June 2012 Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development. The inclusive Green Urban Economy approach embodies a challenge to local government leaders and city practitioners to apply existing tools and methods in new ways to develop innovative approaches by engaging economic-environmental considerations and stakeholders in a much more active fashion. This volume bridges the gap between the global promotion of the Green Economy and the manifestation of this new development strategy at the urban level. Green cities are an imperative solution, not only in meeting global environmental challenges but also in helping to ensure socio-economic prosperity at the local level. Environmentalists must learn to understand the language and dynamics of the economy, and to combine important economic interests (such as cost savings) with ecological interests (such as saving of resources). Business and economic leaders must also understand and accommodate ecological interests to advance social improvement and sustainable development. The editors compiled contributions of varying perspectives and practical experiences from the emerging fields of environmental economics, urban development and green cities, along with concrete examples from city governments. The Economy of Green Cities documents and demonstrates the different layers of knowledge required for a Green Urban Economy. The compendium supports researchers, business thinkers and practitioners to explore, detail and discuss an urban Green Economy agenda.
