"Saberes en movimiento" is a collective contribution in social and legal sciences to studies on migration in Chile. The editorial project emerged as a strategy to articulate three independent academic contexts: a thesis competition and two research projects under the direction of the editor of this volume. These initiatives were approaching and enriching each other with their diverse theoretical and epistemological perspectives, coming to converge in three fundamental ideas for this field of study: the commitment to favor a plurality of views in the production of knowledge, the importance of the human rights approach to address migrations and the need for critical reflection to contribute to plural and inclusive societies.
The richness of social and cultural theory in the humanities offers countless opportunities for using theory-informed concepts in data-based analysis workflows. The contributors to this volume thus encourage further research utilizing out-of-the-box models and approaches to space and place in the field of Digital Humanities. The collection follows the two complementary goals of providing promising conceptualisations of space and place for a broad audience from Digital Humanities, and of presenting current work in Digital Humanities using different conceptualisations of space and place or offering innovative methods for their analysis.
Artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly important topic in the cultural sector. While museums have long focused on building digital object databases, the existing data can now become a field of application for machine learning, deep learning and foundation model approaches. This goes hand in hand with new artistic practices, curation tools, visitor analytics, chatbots, automatic translations and tailor-made text generation. With a decidedly interdisciplinary approach, the volume brings together a wide range of critical reflections, practical perspectives and concrete applications of artificial intelligence in museums, and provides an overview of the current state of the debate.
In an era of heightened global interconnectedness and cultural exchange, social cleavages and dynamics of alienation become increasingly apparent. This necessitates a closer look at the intricate relationship between translations and participations as they unfold together. The contributors to this volume spark a cross-disciplinary dialogue on the interdependencies between translational practices - lingustic as well as cultural - and social participation. Authors from diverse fields, including interpreting, translation and education research as well as anthropology and sociology, share their perspectives on this vital yet often overlooked issue.
"Sir Karl Popper was a major thinker of the twentieth century, one who - as Anthony O'Hear writes in his new Foreword - "has had a beneficent influence on those who have come under the spell of his thought and of the inimitable prose in which he articulates it". It is now 25 years since Popper died, and thus seems - after a quarter of a century - an apposite moment to revaluate his impact, significance and influence. The several chapters in this classic volume focus on many key elements of Popper's thought and philosophy. They are by no means uncritical, but afford Popper the respect due to a philosopher who wrote always with a degree of clarity, precision and directness rare in the academic world of his time, and - as O'Hear puts it - "even rarer subsequently". This important book constitutes an essential introduction to some the most esteemed philosophical writing of our times. Anthony O'Hear, OBE, is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Buckingham. He is an Honorary Director of the Royal Institute of Philosophy and Editor of the Institute's journal Philosophy"--
"The 1924 murder of fourteen-year-old Bobby Franks by Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb shocked the nation. One hundred years later, the killing and its aftermath still reverberate through popular culture and the history of American crime. Hal Higdon's true crime classic offers an unprecedented examination of the case. Beginning with a new author Preface, Higdon details Leopold and Loeb's journey from privilege and promise to the planning and execution of their monstrous vision of the perfect crime. Drawing on secret testimony, Higdon follows the police investigation through the pair's confessions of guilt and re-creates the sensational hearing where Clarence Darrow, the nation's most famous attorney, saved the pair from the death penalty. Published in observance of the case's centennial, Leopold and Loeb tells the dramatic story of a notorious crime and its long afterlife in the American imagination"--
This book offers a comparative analysis of the experiences, responses, and adaptations of people to climate variability and environmental change across the Americas. It foregrounds historical ecology as a structural framework for understanding the climate change crisis throughout the region and throughout time. In recent years, Indigenous and local populations in particular have experienced climate change effects such as altered weather patterns, seasonal irregularities, flooding and drought, and difficulties relating to subsistence practices. Understanding and dealing with these challenges has drawn on peoples' longstanding experience with climate variability and in some cases includes models of mitigation and responses that are millennia old. With contributions from specialists across the Americas, this volume will be of interest to scholars from fields including anthropology, archaeology, geography, environmental studies, and Indigenous studies.
This book examines the impact of epidemics in Africa, exploring some of the adaptation and crisis management strategies adopted to tackle COVID-19, Ebola, and HIV-AIDS. The authors reflect on lessons learned from solving complex problems and difficult decisions made by leaders on pandemic management to shape the security environment and, thus, the well-being of people living in Africa for years to come.
Drawing on cases from across the continent, the book demonstrates that, significantly, during the COVID-19 pandemic, African countries and communities frequently displayed regional solidarity, creativity in decision-making, decisiveness in dealing with corruption and opportunism, and resilience and discipline in implementation. Adopting a human security framework, the authors share their lived experiences and explore the impact of epidemics on public policy decision-making, foreign policy implementation, global relations, collaboration in the community dimension, and, ultimately, the future of socio-economic development in Africa.
This book will be a welcome addition for practitioners and researchers across the fields of security studies, health management, and African studies, making an essential contribution to the security discourse in a post-COVID world.
