This captivating ethnography reveals the immediate and persisting impact of forced family separations and the eventual reunifications in communities affected by El Salvador's civil war. In 2005, medical student Elizabeth Barnert traveled to El Salvador to build a DNA bank for reuniting families forcibly separated during the Salvadoran civil war. Based on fifteen years of interviews and field notes, Reunion chronicles families' experiences with military attacks, child disappearances, and family separations, the joy of reunion and the arduous process of reintegration. Barnert works alongside Jesuit priest and Pro-Búsqueda founder Father Jon Cortina, former rebel fighters, and reformed gang members. She meets an eight-year-old journeying north to reunite with her mother and a young woman returning to El Salvador twenty years after her adoption abroad. Reunion includes a foreword by renowned anthropologist Philippe Bourgois, along with his firsthand account of fleeing a Salvadoran military raid, and never-before-published photos and children's drawings from the war. Told through the voices of activists and survivors, this groundbreaking ethnography illuminates the cycles of poverty and violence driving immigration and ongoing separations around the world

American cities are today more diverse than at any time in history. The continuing flow of new immigrants has settled in urban and suburban areas that have undergone visible change in population and neighborhoods. While Chicago long served as the convenient and well-studied model for urban sociology, for many Los Angeles has become the focal point for study of the postmodern heteropolis. It is interesting that for sociologists New York City, especially its outer boroughs such as Brooklyn and Queens, has largely remained outside the intense gaze of urban study. As the nation's largest city New York has long had a mosaic of social worlds comparable to that of Chicago, and displays an ethnic diversity comparable to that of Los Angeles. Because New York City presents us with a less easily recognizable mosaic and a more free form scattering of ethnic social spaces, it is seldom thought of as a pre or post-modern "model" for other metropolitan areas. The eight articles presented in this volume represent both older and established ethnic and racial communities as well as new and emerging groups in New York City. These include Italian communities, African American, as well as newer Jewish, Caribbean, and Asian groups.

In this essay, I reflect on my experiences in teaching ethnographic writing to graduate anthropology students over the last decade. After years of experimenting with different course formats and ethnographic exercises, the anthropology department in Hamburg now offers two courses on ethnographic writing before fieldwork and one course after students have returned from the field. The first course, taken before students conduct their master's fieldwork, focuses on reading ethnographies. It draws on John van Maanen's (1988 [2011]) Tales of the Field to explore different writing styles and guides students to imitate these styles in different writing exercises. The second preparatory course introduces students to ethnographic writing through the observation of everyday interactions. Students observe, take notes, and write ethnographic narratives about visits to a playground, an elevator ride, or lunchtime in the university cafeteria. When students return from their master's fieldwork, they finally participate in the 'Ethnographic Writing Workshop'. Here students write and revise key ethnographic scenes, dialogues, and portraits derived from their fieldwork. This set of ethnographic writing courses encourages students to read (more) ethnographies, reflect on writing styles, and work on their own writing in groups and by themselves. With this essay, I want to initiate a dialogue about different approaches to teaching ethnographic writing.

'Tipping' has been a legally recognized form of labor remuneration in the United States for many decades, but it is experiencing a resurgence outside of its usual confines in the hospitality sector. The proliferation of the practice is bound to the long-term economic shift into services, as well as the more recent expansion of the gig economy. Tipping informalizes the wage relation, incentivizes the worker in precarity, and internalizes social relations of subordination, and is thus a highly effective technique of labor subsumption particularly suitable for the idiomatic kind of social dependencies and subordination required by an increasingly 'neo-feudal' capitalism. Around the spread of the practice, there is an apologetic liberal discourse on freedom and 'choice' that emphasizes the supposed advantages of tipping for the worker subjected to it, over and above the increasingly problematic wage relation. Drawing anecdotally on a critical insider-ethnography of laboring in the restaurant industry of the Hamptons (Long Island, New York), and by enlisting a Neo-Roman concept of liberty, the article attempts a critical reappraisal of liberal claims regarding tipping as a form of remuneration in the so-called 'service sector'. Instead, we indicate how tipping actually produces more appropriately governable worker subjectivities for capital.

This dissertation is an ethnography of Latina/o youth's cultural citizenship. The goal of this research is to center the voices and lived experiences of Latina/o youth in the conceptualizing and theorizing of citizenship and rights, specifically cultural citizenship. Drawing on data from a school-based youth participatory action research (YPAR) program, with fourth and fifth grade Latina/o youth, this ethnographic case study addresses two interrelated questions. First, how do Latina/o youth define the terms citizen and citizenship? Second, how do Latina/o youth reflect on and enact their cultural citizenship? Data for this research include ethnographic fieldnotes, and semi-structured one on one interviews with youth conducted at two separate time points. The results highlight the voices and experiences of thirteen Latina/o youth, from first and second-generation im/migrant families from Latin America. Specifically, Latina/o youth's cultural citizenship in relation to four processes: membership via positionality and social identities; sense of belonging through meaningful participation and intergenerational friendships; claiming space in the process of de-ideologizing and decolonizing settings; and demanding rights beyond individual self-determination. This research sets the foundation for an intersectional critical approach toward the study of Latina/o youth's political subjectivities.

The ecology of immigration discourse is an ideoscape in flux. It is a landscape constructed along human mobility, lifeworlds, ontological state security as well as along emotional and institutional complexities. There has been significant recent proliferation of border literature and ethnographies that represent narratives of migrants on the U.S-Mexico border. Ethnography as non-fiction literature documents border trajectories. This paper seeks to address how these trajectories are represented and or translated through a case study of the non-fiction work, The death and life of Aida Hernandez: a border story by Aaron Bobrow-Strain (2019) in which there is a distinct ecology in the ethos of ethnography and immigrant criminalization. This case study assesses therefore the relation between the politics of ethnographic ideoscapes, translation and agency based upon Critical Discourse Analysis (Wodak & Kollner, 2008; Wodak & Meyer, 2016) as well as evaluation and decision-making (Munday, 2012) when translating ethnography as a genre of represented voices. ; A ecologia do discurso imigratório é uma paisagem ideológica em fluxo (um ideoscape). É uma paisagem construída com base na mobilidade humana, nos mundos pessoais (lifeworlds), na segurança ontológica, e também, nas complexidades emocionais e institucionais. Nos últimos anos, há bastante produção de literatura e de etnografias de fronteira, que representam as narrativas de migrantes na fronteira E.U.A.-México. Aetnografia como literatura não-ficção serve para documentar as trajetórias de fronteira. Neste trabalho, propõe-se examinar como essas trajetórias são representadas e ou traduzidas em um estudo de caso da obra não-ficção, The death and life of Aida Hernandez: a border story escrita por Aaron Bobrow-Strain (2019) em que existe uma ecologia distinta no ethos da etnografia e na criminalização do imigrante. Neste estudo de caso, avalia-se a relação entre a política de paisagens etnográficas, a tradução e a agência com base na Análise Crítica de Discurso (Wodak & Kollner, 2008; Wodak & Meyer, 2016) e também em questões de avaliação e tomadas de decisão (Munday, 2012) na tradução de etnografia como um gênero de vozes representadas e representativas.

The anthropological understanding of the Soviet economy began during its existence, drawing from various sci-ences, including ethnography. The relationship between Soviet ethnography and economic anthropology remains a topic of debate, as there was no consensus on this issue within Soviet science itself. Ethnographic science, for ideo-logical and methodological reasons, did not associate itself with Western anthropology. There was a conscious dis-tancing of ethnography from academic economics, which made it difficult to form economic anthropology in the modern sense. At the same time, from the 1950s to the 1980s, the ethnographers succeeded in uncovering a number of important issues, for example the multi-structural nature of the Soviet economy and the functioning of archaic production practices and relations within the planned economy. Much attention was paid to the consumer behavior of citizens in different parts of the country and the changes in everyday life. Collective values, intended to be strength-ened on the path towards communism, were also a focal point. The studies covered the diversity of economic prac-tices, but encountered challenges due to the absence of a language for describing strategies and tactics of economic behavior in Soviet reality. Instead, people used euphemisms, adapted ideologemes, figures of silence relating to cer-tain production and consumption practices that were not entirely legal. The issues of planning, motivation, exchange, perception of economic reality, and informal relations, important for economic anthropology, remained largely unex-plored. Moreover, there was a giant bias towards rural residents and archaic practices.

Este artigo considera a dinâmica do bairro da Lapa, no Rio de Janeiro, e propõe um recorte metodológico possível para compreensão de espaços urbanos em processo de transformação, como este. Tais situações constituem-se de difícil apreensão por serem caracterizadas por um movimento de mudança, através do qual um conjunto de narrativas e práticas emanam e se afetam constantemente. A forma pela qual se apreendeu este movimento, neste caso, incluiu a análise de discursos públicos sobre o bairro, em paralelo a uma etnografia que privilegiou a observação da dinâmica de uma única rua. Ambas as perspectivas serão analisadas a partir de seus cruzamentos e pertinências para compreensão do processo de construção dos espaços e temporalidades da Lapa hoje.Palavras-chave: Espaço Urbano. Etnografia.Between the street and the neighborhood: ethnography of a moving spaceAbstractThis paper considers the dynamics of Lapa district in Rio de Janeiro, and proposes a possible methodological approach to understand urban spaces in transformation process such as this. Such situations are themselves difficult to grasp because they are characterized by a movement of change through which a set of narratives and practices emanates and affects itself constantly. The way in which this movement seized in this case included the analysis of public discourse about the neighborhood, in parallel to an ethnography that focused on the observation of the dynamics of a single street. Both perspectives will be analyzed from their crosses and pertinence for understanding the process of construction of spaces and temporalities in Lapa today.Key Words: Urban Space. The article deals with the problems of African study process peculiarities as the science field in the era of globalization. The authors analyze Ethnography and language cultures peculiarities typical of Africa. The main part of the research is devoted to the language group variety, most common features of language divisions and subdivisions, spread on the territory of African Continent. The field of civic and political participation has been studied mostly from individual, psychological approaches rather than collective, relational perspectives. Here we address this gap through a political ethnography in the youth wing of a major Portuguese political party, conducted during the fervent months right before and after the Portuguese parliamentary elections of October 2015. Investigating the meaning-making of doing politics in real-life contexts, we assess the collective learning processes involved in political participation. This paper shows that youth wings can provide quality participation experiences. Indeed, collectively envisioning and constructing a more democratic society and working for the public good are guiding principles of the wing. Debatement politics and pedagogical politics thus play a fundamental role in the wing's activity, even if they are accompanied by the more mundane, festive party politics and the backstage politics. Through their activity, the wing's members acquire and display high levels of political efficacy, critical thinking and effort regulation regarding political involvement. Methodologically, this paper shows that ethnography is well equipped to study the experience of participation, foregrounding activities and perceptions of wing's members in order to make sense of their learning processes and outcomes.
