A psychologist's account of the impact on children of the war in Kosovo is based on three months in 1999 spent working with refugee families in Macedonia, & war-ravaged families in Kosovo, as part of a Trauma Recovery Project designed to help Albanian families overcome traumatic memories. The nature of the project is described, noting that drawing, storytelling, & game-playing were especially effective in treating children. Most of them had witnessed massacres, killing, & torture, in addition to having to leave their family homes to live in refugee camps, resulting in feelings of insecurity, anxiety, confusion, & helplessness. The stories of several children are related in their words, along with several drawings & poems, to illustrate the internal chaos & psychological devastation that was the consequence of witnessing horrific events. However, it is noted that some of the children developed an unusual moral acumen & sense of responsibility following the loss of comfort associated with family caring. 3 drawings. J. Lindroth

Describes efforts to teach peer counseling to adolescents living in a children's refugee camp in Subotica, Serbia, during 1993, & establishment of the "Peer Link Club," an international organization of adolescents/young adults trained to implement & teach peer counseling. The process involves learning the skills/techniques of active listening & problem solving in order to counsel other young people with traumatized pasts. Almost all of the children in camp had a parent or other close relative harmed in the war. Difficulties involved in getting the wary adolescents to begin communicating are described, as well as the progressive increase in group cohesion & sharing that occurred during the course of the workshop. Strategies used to create a context for relationship building are examined, along with the use of role-playing to teach participants how to engage in active listening & deal with stressful conversations. The project enabled young people to begin the long process of overcoming the impact of war & reviving their interrupted adolescence. Graduates eagerly carried the project to other refugee camps. J. Yugoslavia's independent media & pro-democracy intellectual elites continue to be threatened from within the country & misunderstood abroad. Independent journalists exposing the repression of information have no guarantee of safety or security. The Milosevic regime has been shutting down independent media outlets & intimidating ordinary people; a number of specific cases are reported. On the other hand, the Western sponsors of the independent press are disappointed that more is not being done to condemn Milosevic's regime & inform citizens about human rights violations, eg, of ethnic Albanians.
