The Egyptian politician Ali Mubarak (1823-1893) included three passages about French history in his "maqama" Alamuddin (1882). From our modern European point of view, the French Revolution is an outstanding event. But in Alamuddin French history is summarized by applying Islamic concepts like "jahiliyya," "sharia," and "fitna". Therefore, the sixteenth century Wars of Religion are regarded as events that are more interesting than the French Revolution.

Adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse who are members of patriarchal religions face a particular challenge because church teachings and interactions with church members may present barriers to the full recognition and healing of their abuse. This article reports on a study of the experiences of 71 Mormon women survivors of abuse in their dealings with church leaders and the women's responses to these interactions.

In 1964, the Congress of the United States passed the Civil Rights Act. Title VII of this act prohibited employers from engaging in employment discrimination based purely on race, colour, religion, gender and national origin. Such a national policy marked the beginnings of a culturally diverse workforce. However, over the years, employers have remained reluctant to hire individuals who were, in their minds, significantly different from their traditional workforce.

The first aspired to adapt the Indians to the political and cultural environment of a predominantly creole/Western society. The second wanted to preserve the existing culture and religion. The popular position that nationalism is receding & that the nation-state is being replaced by transnational methods of political organization is reconsidered. Overviews of Hegel's & Marx's respective accounts of the historical development of state structures are presented, raising questions concerning the conditions that engender collective identities & how such identities are influenced by political & social activity. Benedict Anderson's (1983) analysis of imagined communities is subsequently discussed, emphasizing his delineation of nationalism as a counterpart to kinship & his assertion that nationalism's roots are located within familial & religious traditions. Although Anderson's understanding of nationalism is deemed useful for understanding certain citizens' willingness to sacrifice their lives for their country, other problems with his language-oriented conceptualization of nationalism are highlighted. In fact, it is countered that the state's willingness to mobilize armed resistance & citizens' recognition of this power, not the cultural characteristics of the state, form the foundation of nationalist identity. It is suggested that Marx's inability to define a national people should not necessarily be defined as a deficiency with his thought. J. W. Parker

In essayistischer Form geht der Autor von der Überlegung aus, daß der Mythos, der "scheinbar hinter uns liegt" von den verdrängten Dimensionen der säkularisierten Moderne erzählt, die in der Beherrschung der "menschenfremden Elemente" Luft und Feuer ihren Ausdruck gefunden habe. Er greift auf die antike Überlieferung zurück und beschreibt ausführlich und unter Rückgriff auf literarische Formen und zahlreiche Zitate die Geschichte des Phaeton, dem Ovid eine "Verwandlungs-Geschichte" eingeräumt habe sowie andere Mythengestalten der Antike. Er interpretiert die historischen Mythen in alltagspraktischer Weise. Den Göttern sich verwandt zu wissen, doch von ihnen getrennt zu sein, ist ein schweres Erbe, das die Religionen hinterlassen haben, heißt eine abschließende Überlegung des Autors, der sich in seinen Ausführungen in persönlicher Form an Lars Clausen wendet. Der Autor geht auf die deutsche Rezeption der amerikanischen Kommunitarismus-Debatte ein, die zur Vermeidung von Mißverständnissen eine ideengeschichtliche Rekonstruktion des Gemeinschaftsdenkens in der europäischen Tradition erfordert und die Besonderheiten des amerikanischen 'communitarianism', d.h. die unterschiedlichen Interpretationszusammenhänge berücksichtigen muß. Diese sind im wesentlichen auf drei Ebenen anzusiedeln: in der amerikanischen Religions- und Kultursoziologie bezieht sich der Kommunitarismusgedanke erstens auf gegenkulturelle und utopische Gemeinschaften; auf der politischen Ebene von Demokratie und Partizipation ist er zweitens auf einen republikanischen, politischen Gemeinsinn ausgerichtet; drittens wendet er sich im Kontext von Ethik und Sozialwissenschaften gegen einen methodischen Individualismus und Systemfunktionalismus. Der Kommunitarismus stellt allgemein betrachtet keinen 'traditionalistischen Rückfall', sondern eine sinnvolle Rückkehr zu vernachlässigten Aspekten der Aufklärung dar. (ICI)

In dem Beitrag werden die hessischen Ergebnisse der Reichstagswahl von 1932 und der Bundestagswahl von 1949 unter der Fragestellung verglichen, ob alte Sozialmilieus für sie noch eine Bindekraft besaßen oder ob zu Beginn der Bundesrepublik ein totaler Kontinuitätsbruch stattfand. Dabei wird besonders danach gefragt, woher 1932 die NSDAP-Wähler kamen und wohin diese sich 1949 wendeten. Es werden politisch-ökologische und sozialräumliche Zusammenhänge betrachtet. Es wird deutlich, daß 1949 in Hessen Volksparteien nicht entwickelt sind. Die politische Fragmentierung existiert 1949 ebenso wie 1932, wenn auch die Abgrenzung der SPD zu Beamten und Angestellten abgeschwächt wurde. Klasse und Religion stellen weiterhin mächtige Faktoren dar. Insofern wird 1949 als eine "Übergangswahl" und kein wirklicher Neubeginn interpretiert. (ICE)

The existence of a meaningful distinction between economic rights and "other rights" has been a cornerstone of constitutional law for the past sixty years. During this period, the federal courts consistently have taken the position that Congress is free to abuse citizens' economic liberties, but is not permitted to interfere with such other, noneconomic "rights" as freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, and freedom of religion.

Religion frequently plays a role in parents' adaptation to their children's disability. This article examines the religious perceptions of 161 parents of children with visual impairments, as indicated in their responses to a questionnaire. The areas that were investigated included changes in parents' religious beliefs following the diagnosis of their children's disability, interpretations of the cause of the disability, and perceptions of support from their religious communities.
