Drawing on his experiences leading citizenship classes for Mexican migrants and working with cross-border activists, Adriâan Fâelix examines the political lives (and deaths) of Mexican migrants in Specters of Belonging. Tracing transnationalism across the different stages of the migrant political life cycle - beginning with the so-called political baptism of naturalization and ending with the practice by which migrant bodies are repatriated to Mexico for burial after death, Fâelix reveals the varied ways in which Mexican transnational subjects practice citizenship in the United States as well as Mexico
By now it has become a common observation that liberal and republican models of democracy are inadequate in making sense of the expansive political landscape in today's complex and pluralistic societies. Deliberative democracy has become a new favorite amongst scholars in the attempt to reinvigorate democracy through normative frameworks that emphasize rationality, consensus and informed discussions. On the other hand, scholars have questioned whether the this model is effective with regards to present forms of political engagements that are often mediatized and staged in ways that fall short of deliberative ideals. This research moves beyond these models in the attempt to better capture the complex power relations that underpin contemporary liberal democratic societies. This involves rethinking concepts of political legitimacy and the public sphere. Through interrogating Habermas's discourse model of democracy and putting him in dialogue with the works of Lefort and Foucault, it will be demonstrated that it is useful to view political legitimacy not as a status but a process in which individuals legitimate or de-legitimate the power relations that they find themselves in. In addition, the public sphere should be conceptualized as the public stage, in which individuals must struggle with not only the state apparatuses, but also with oppressive or dominating forms of power, in the government of both themselves and others. By redefining these two important concepts in political philosophy, this research seeks to rethink modern democracy as constituting the very condition of indeterminacy. ; published_or_final_version ; Philosophy ; Master ; Master of Philosophy

This paper aims to fill the gap in the study of tarekat (Sufi orders) and politics in Indonesia. It specifically wants to reveal the determination of the tarekat network and movement within Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and their influence on the socio-political dynamics of this organization. The hypothesis that underlies this paper is that tarekat not only has religious potential, but also holds social, political, economic, and cultural potential. Socio-religiously, tarekat becomes a medium for instilling and transmitting religious values; it becomes a transmitter for ethical and spiritual values in society. Meanwhile, institutionally, tarekat is also a vehicle for articulating social interests and power. In this sense, the tarekat figures are not only active in religious activities but also able to form and be involved in the political arena. They created undercurrents to promote democratization and even collaborated with power holders to control political agendas and respond to socio-religious issues. The 2019 electoral political contestation shows that NU has succeeded in becoming the channel for democratic forces when competing with the forces of Islamism. Next, this study also indicates that the tarekat networks, as a force that can gather spiritual and political support, make NU a socio-religious organization that helps determine politics in Indonesia. Using Bourdieu's theoretical framework of social capital, this paper shows that the tarekat movement, as a religious institution in dialectic with social and political situations, will be primarily determined by habitus, capital, and arena. In general, these findings imply that the conception of tarekat often seen as apolitical mysticism needs to be reviewed and reconceptualized since, in fact, it is socio-politically relevant. As the Gulf assumes an ever more important identity in the global political economy, we see the emergence of a new popular and political culture underpinning its increasingly self-confident national identities. This volume explores the new dynamism of the Gulf, reflected not just in high-rise buildings and booming stock markets, but also manifested in the realms of art, ideas and expression, and their relationships with political authority. Contributors include figures instrumental to the emergence of these new identities, including artists, broadcasters and cultural commentators
The study starts with a theoretical framework that is built on previous research on regulation and political economy. It is followed by an overview of the Peruvian water sector and the political system of the country in the following section. In section four, the qualitative analysis is presented. In section five the quantitative approaches are carried out. It starts by a test for political budget cycles and partisan effects followed by an examination of the median voter theorem. Finally, section six discusses the results and concludes.

The repeal of the Corn Laws in Britain in 1846 has been much debated as to whether interest groups or ideology contributed most to this policy reform. This paper examines a conventional view that Sir Robert Peel, in proposing repeal, converted from protection to free trade under the influence of the ideas of political economy. It is shown that economic ideas had a crucial influence on Peel, but that he remained skeptical of political economy as a doctrine.
