Peace and justice: seeking accountability after war

The Economics of Conflict and Peace
This essay takes stock of the existing literature in economics on the costs, consequences and causes of armed conflicts. The existing literature has put a particular focus, among others, on the impact of ethnic diversity, natural resource abundance and high poverty levels on the likelihood of conflict. Drawing on this, the current essay highlights several broad emerging trends in this literature. First of all, more and more papers use newly created, very fine-grained data. Second, there is a trend towards linking more closely the empirical analysis to underlying theoretical frameworks. Third, there is a growing awareness of the importance of being policy relevant. Studying the impact of particular policies and institutions is likely to take a more central importance in this literature in the coming years.

War, peace, and reconciliation: a theological inquiry
War, Peace, and Reconciliation invites Christians and the churches into a conversation over how to think about war from a standpoint in faith. It asks how reconciliation, which is central to Christian life and doctrine, can engage the realities of war without surrendering its fundamental affirmations. It defines these realities politically by discussing the meanings of power, peace as a particular organization of power, and the international system. The study of war and politics is unavoidable, as is the engagement with reconciliation, because all human existence and activity exist in the context of the gracious work of God to renew and reconcile the fallen creation. The inquiry is theocentric and christocentric. It culminates in a call to the churches to examine all their practices in the light of this perspective

Putting Peace Back Into the Peace Corps: Restoring International Volunteering for Development as a Peacebuilding Modality
In: Journal of peacebuilding & development, Band 15, Heft 1, S. 61-74
ISSN: 2165-7440
International volunteering for development is neglected as a peacebuilding model, despite its origins in the early 20th-century pacifist movement. In part, this is due to pressures from donor- and sponsor-state agendas, which emphasise neoliberal and securitisation dynamics, similar to those experienced by the wider peacebuilding and development field. Research in peace studies has overlooked the field, making it unclear what unique impacts these activities might have upon peacebuilding and conflict. This not only leaves us blind to its potential as an underused peacebuilding modality, but it also makes it difficult to mitigate potential harms. To prepare the foundation for future research and programme evaluation, I propose a levels of analysis model for mapping the potential peacebuilding impacts of international volunteering and service. This will be grounded in a reconstruction of the peacebuilding paradigms espoused by early theorists and practitioners.
