Beyond the Ghetto - an interdisciplinary perspective on patterns of ethnicity in the built environment
In: UCL: London, UK.
Despite a century of research into residential settlement patterns, not enough is understood about the patterns of immigrant settlement. This topical issue requires radical thinking, particularly as it is currently dealt with by a range of disciplines, each of which tends to rely on its own research paradigms. There is an underlying problem surrounding research into the relationship between society and space. Whilst the social sciences tend to lack an understanding of the independent contribution of the built environment to the way in which communities change over time, the spatial sciences lack an understanding of the political and cultural dynamics underpinning statistical measures of segregation. There is a need for an interdisciplinary approach to take account of both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of cities and migration. The aim of the UCL Cities and Migration working group is to challenge the orthodox view of the relation between social structures and the urban environment over time and to cross traditional research boundaries with a combination of architectural, geographical, sociological, anthropological and historical approaches to the topic of segregation. This report summarises the discussions which took place in May 2010 at the invitation of the UCL Grand Challenge: Sustainable Cities. A gathering of thirty academics and other interested parties came together to hear presentations by UCL scholars from The Bartlett (Sonia Arbaci), Geography (Pablo Mateos), Geomatic Engineering (Muki Haklay) and Public Health (Ilaria Geddes). These were followed by responses from three invited experts: Professor Pnina Werbner (Social Anthropology, Keele), Professor Ceri Peach (Social Geography, Oxford) and Professor Ludi Simpson (Population Studies, Manchester). The following report is the distillation by the UCL academics of the workshop discussions the event's Chair, Laura Vaughan, and does not necessarily replicate the views of the participants.

ABSTRACTThis work analyses the constitution of the frontiers as social spaces where constructed relational webs result fundamental for understanding the dynamics of the events that took place in the pampas from the third decade of the eighteenth century. Through the analysis of conflict and war as practices that alter the social relationships at the frontier, we inquire about the affectation of the interests of those parts involved – the colonial government, Hispanic-Creole populations and native factions- and about the emphasis placed in the documental record, particularly in the case of the Indian raids. This way, the frontier of the Pampas is shown as an almost permanent conflict space where the described situation becomes discursive legitimation for the actions of those constituting the social space, either punitively or pacifically, such as the Jesuit missions settled at the beginnings of 1740. As such, the Company of Jesus and his reductions becomes the methodological excuse trough which it is possible to approach the native populations of the pampas and, specially, their political structure.Key words: Borderlands; conflict; pampas; Jesuits.

Central America: Oscillating Support for Democracies in Turmoil Between 1996 and 2018 ; Centroamérica: El apoyo oscilante a democracias en convulsión entre 1996 y 2018
The article analyzes the attitudes towards democracy that the "Latinobarometer" public opinion project has registered between 1996 and 2018 in Central America. This study is divided into three parts: the theoretical and documentary discussion, the analysis of political attitudes with the support of statistical tools and the discussion of the results. In the first, a review of the literature on political culture and democratization in the region is carried out, and then the conceptual category that was chosen to understand the responses of Central Americans regarding democracy as a form of government is based; in the second, a general description is made of what allows us to observe the time series from a general and logarithmic perspective; as well as the interpretation of the results obtained from the application of the Unit Root test to identify the degree of autocorrelation and the Microsoft Excel forecasting tool to make the forecasts for the years 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022; and, finally, in the third part, the results obtained from the analysis carried out and the tests applied are analyzed from a conclusive narrative.

Immigrant England, 1300-1550
In: Manchester medieval studies
This book provides a vivid and accessible history of first-generation immigrants to England in the later Middle Ages. Accounting for upwards of two percent of the population and coming from all parts of Europe and beyond, immigrants spread out over the kingdom, settling in the countryside as well as in towns, taking work as agricultural labourers, skilled craftspeople and professionals. Often encouraged and welcomed, sometimes vilified and victimised, immigrants were always on the social and political agenda.0Immigrant England is the first book to address a phenomenon and issue of vital concern to English people at the time, to their descendants living in the United Kingdom today and to all those interested in the historical dimensions of immigration policy, attitudes to ethnicity and race and concepts of Englishness and Britishness. --
