Niebuhr was a Protestant theologian and political adviser to the American establishment. The Mayor of Florence, La Pira, was a prominent Italian statesman and an eminent Catholic thinker. The author analyzes their views on international relations, in particularly on the western policy towards the Soviet Union, the use of nuclear weapons, the war in Vietnam and communism. The legacy of two thinkers is highly topical in front of the ethical dimension of choices needed in international politics today.

As the world struggles with accommodation of diversity in a wide variety of situations, including armed struggles with sometimes transnational security dimensions, it is clear that ethnic, religious and linguistic identity constitutes a reality, which needs to be taken into account. This book offers a theory about the nature and essence of minority participation and representation, while describing possible problematic aspects, which need to be taken into account when devising various institutions and mechanisms. Moving from political theory and philosophy through positive international (human rights) law and practice to implementation and other manifestations in particular domestic situations, this volume constitutes a reliable source on the subject matter, bridging theory and practice. An interview with Davilo Zolo, a professor of the Philosophy of Law & Political Philosophy at the University of Florence. Zolo identifies the complex problems of today's world as: the concentration of international political power in the hands of a few countries, notably the US, the growing division between rich & poor, violence practiced by government & non-government terrorists alike, environmental hazards, & the rise of new powers like China. These problems make it difficult to predict international relations in the next 10 years. Zolo discusses the difference between the terms imperialism & hegemony. The imperial paradigm of the Romans had three morphological & functional characteristics: strength, centralization, & expansion; non-representation but functioning government within a plural society; & a pacifist & universalist ideology. The US practices a brand of neo-imperialism now. Zolo discusses the praxis of humanitarian intervention in the new world order in the wars of Yugoslavia & the Gulf -- it is aggressive intervention legitimized. There is a lack of consensus about the definition of terrorism, for example, in the case of Israeli & Palestinian violence. The European Social Forum hosted by Florence, Italy, in Nov 2002, was expected by many to balloon into a giant violent political protest. It did not. There was not a single act of violence, & participation was way beyond expectations, with 60,000 participants, representing 426 associations in 105 countries, taking part in the 30 plenary sessions, 160 seminars, 180 workshops, & 75 cultural events. The protests that did take place were seen as a moment of consolidation of a social movement. The ESF formally declared "We want a World of differences, freedom, & reciprocal respect." This chapter focuses on how this "movement of movements" mobilizes, constructs its own resources & opportunities, exploits a vast but heterogeneous social capital but has an individualistic Zeitgeist that discourages traditional militantism, develops tolerant identities, & frames differences as an enriching characteristic of the movement. This reconstruction of the movement's identity & politics is based on survey of ESF activists, 6 focus groups, & semi-structured interviews with representative country samples, totaling 2,384 participants. The findings lead to the conclusion that from this movement for global justice there emerges a conception of democracy as a search for a common good, starting from a pluralist confrontation among equals. 7 pages, 5 figures. ; We present an analytical, numerical and experimental study of the switching time and jitter of current induced polarization switching in Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers in the presence of spontaneous emission noise. Assuming that the switching is induced by changes in the dichroism, the problem can be reduced to the well-known first passage time problem in gain switched Class-A lasers. Students of economic thought have long associated with the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries the spread of attitudes in Europe more tolerant of market processes. New economic attitudes appear in a variety of literary forms during the fifteenth century (McGovern 1970). As compared to the pronouncements of a number of Patristic figures, relatively greater tolerance of commerce is expressed by medieval theologians. In fact, recent scholarly efforts suggest that by the late thirteenth century, suspicions of economic activity remained, but Scholastic thinkers increasingly recognized the importance of an impersonal market process in everyday life and sought to find ways to understand it in light of their concern with natural order (Kaye 1998a). While condemning avarice, Scholastic writers such as San Antonino of Florence and San Bernadino of Sienna explicitly endorsed trade as legitimate when practiced for the common good and when associated with modest profit (Origo 1962; De Roover 1967). Recognition of this movement in thought, especially as it applied the concerns of economic justice to trade in commodities, is explicit in the literature of preclassical economics. But until recently, less attention has been paid to more specific developments in scholastic thinking on justice in the labor market.

Environmental Training in Engineering Education (ENTREE 2001) - integrated green policies: progress for progress, p. 329-339 (Florence, 14-17 November 2001; proceedings published as book) ; This paper describes the experience of a joint university-industry effort, under the course "Project on Environmental Management and Auditing", in the Environmental Engineering program at the New University of Lisbon. In this course, students are divided in audit teams and perform environmental audits in operating companies or institutions. The course has shown remarkable success, in all respects. The total number of case studies so far is 50. They have covered many fields of activity, including among others: chemicals, cement, electricity, gas, metalwork, pulp and paper, auto components and assembly, construction works, waste treatment, shopping centres, fuel and chemical storage, public and cargo transportation, an airport, military bases, insurance business, tourism, a natural preserve, zoos and aquariums, and the UNL Campus itself at Caparica. Relations with the audited companies or institutions have been quite positive, by means of carefully drafted protocols that ensure a mutually acceptable methodology and scope of the audit, along with undisclosure clauses. We have found this a very positive experience for all concerned: the students, the companies or institutions and the University.

and general subject matter, but it is still possible to identify a number of
common themes. They are particularly important for what they reveal
about the links between formal welfare provision, protective legislation,
family care, and the standard of living. They also yield many individual
insights into such matters as family reconstitution, migration, child
labour, working conditions, municipal welfare services, the decline of
infant and maternal mortality, and the possible existence of a demographic
threat to the viability of modern welfare states.

Several years ago, Regina G. Kunzel presented a provocative examination of the Florence Crittenton maternity homes between 1915 and 1945. Her goal was to trace "the history of the transformation from evangelical to professional work with unmarried mothers." Kunzel's thesis is that in the early twentieth century the control and treatment of unmarried mothers shifted dramatically: from evangelical women "who understood their work in terms of the 'feminine' virtues of piety and sympathy" to social work professionals "who claimed expertise based on training in the scientific method." Evangelical women wanted to redeem "fallen women" in need of salvation—which they regarded as "a moral problem to be solved by sisterhood." In contrast, social workers viewed unmarried mothers as "social units" requiring scientific treatment and "adjustment." These differing viewpoints had practical consequences when it came to treating unwed mothers. Evangelical women were committed to keeping mother and illegitimate child together—a principle Kunzel describes as "the cornerstone of womanly benevolence in maternity homes." In contrast—and this point is at the heart of Kunzel's thesis—social workers were militant proponents of separating mother and child because they believed that the majority of unmarried mothers "were unfit and would be better off giving their babies up for adoption."
