Künstliche Intelligenz ist ein bedeutendes Thema in der Öffentlichkeit und wird zunehmend Teil unseres Alltags - und unserer Narrative. In Filmen, die realitätsnahe Zukunftsentwürfe auf der Erde zeigen, nimmt sie seit 1970 verschiedene Rollen ein. Anhand einer Analyse der narrativen Struktur von 70 Science-Fiction-Filmen, die zwischen 1970 und 2020 veröffentlicht wurden, leitet Nadine Hammele drei Metanarrative ab. Die Filme setzen sich mit Fragen nach Kontrolle, Emanzipation, dem Gelingen von Beziehungen sowie dem Menschsein auseinander. Des Weiteren beschreibt sie Veränderungen der gesellschaftlichen Themen, Erzählweisen und Figurencharakterisierungen von künstlicher Intelligenz. Dabei wird deutlich: Der gesellschaftliche Hype um künstliche Intelligenz, der in den 2010er Jahren aufkam, hat filmische Geschichten auf vielfältige Weise beeinflusst.

Faith Development Interviews offer great insight into people's ways of (non-)religious meaning-making, and of looking at their life and relationships. Ramona Bullik portrays nine longitudinal case studies in a mixed-methods design with narrative analysis granting insight into the developments and stabilities in the interviews. The focus on religious married couples allows to carve out the role of faith and the changing view on the spouse and the joint life. The portraits of three non-religious women show how meaning is made outside the frame of organized religion. Individual survey data are put into relation with a larger sample, answering the claim for idiothetic research.

This IQAS special issue on "Knowledge on the Move" critically examines the circulation of knowledge in Asia, seeking to understand what kind of knowledge moves, where and when, and why and how it does or did so. It addresses the dynamics of global epistemic frameworks, intellectual problematisation, and everyday knowing, emphasizing that knowledge systems connect people across nations and regions. The issue discusses diverse knowledges that foster connectivity and explores the boundaries and limitations that arise. Translation becomes essential in making knowledge "move" and convey meanings effectively. While some concepts from the West have been introduced in Asia, criticisms of unidirectional flows persist in global academia. The articles present rich research results, providing insights into the circulation and construction of connections across Asia, encouraging further discussions on knowledge movement and the concept of Asia itself.

The deep change of digitization and the interconnected mediality within the (scientific) everyday life enables changing perspectives of knowledge production and an paradigmatic realignment of cultural analysis. The introduction opens perspectives on this change, fields of tension and challenges. How do digital methods change the research process? The contributions of the issue are presented.

Mit der sich verändernden Zusammensetzung der Gesellschaften kommen Fragen der sozialen Vielfalt und des gleichberechtigten Zugangs von Minderheitengruppen zur Gesundheitsversorgung zunehmend ins Blickfeld. Gleichwohl gibt es weiterhin Debatten über die praktische Umsetzung der Gleichstellung im Gesundheitswesen. Ziel der Beiträge in diesem Band ist daher ein besseres Verständnis des Phänomens der Ungleichheit und Diskriminierung von Minderheitengruppen beim Zugang zur Gesundheitsversorgung aus interdisziplinären Perspektiven der Medizinethik, der öffentlichen Gesundheit und des Rechts. Ein solches Verständnis kann dazu führen, dass die besonderen Bedürfnisse von Minderheiten in Bezug auf die Gesundheitsversorgung ermittelt werden.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created an extraordinary medical, economic and humanitarian emergency. Artificial intelligence, in combination with other digital technologies, is being used as a tool to support the fight against the viral pandemic that has affected the entire world since the beginning of 2020. Barcelona Supercomputing Center collaborates in the battle against the coronavirus in different areas: the application of bioinformatics for the research on the virus and its possible treatments, the use of artificial intelligence, natural language processing and big data techniques to analyse the spread and impact of the pandemic, and the use of the MareNostrum 4 supercomputer to enable massive analysis on COVID-19 data. Many of these activities have included the use of personal and sensitive data of citizens, which, even during a pandemic, should be treated and handled with care. In this work we discuss our approach based on an ethical, transparent and fair use of this information, an approach aligned with the guidelines proposed by the European Union. ; Peer Reviewed ; Postprint (author's final draft)

This article provides background and context for regional trends and historic agreements focused on the Nile River Basin, offers a comprehensive assessment of security challenges, and presents focus areas for future investment and cooperation. The policy recommendations will serve American interests better and improve agricultural practices in the region. Without a marked alteration of existing aid from Western countries, the water scarcity situation will continue without significantly producing the required infrastructure improvements.

This article assesses the American-Russian economic relationship, identifying how Russia exploits strategic asymmetries to gain advantage in the space below armed conflict and how the United States can modernize its economic statecraft. It draws upon a wide range of comparative research, from US-Russian military thought to the American-Eurasian economic interrelationship, to evaluate the full range of economic statecraft within a single dyad of countries in the context of coercion theory. This analysis will assist American policymakers in reforming priorities and processes according to principles of economic statecraft to sustain ongoing American coercion and set conditions for advantage upon the return to bilateral competition.

Die vorliegende Arbeit beginnt mit einer vollständigen Erklärung der hermeneutisch phänomenologischen Methode, welche in den Jahren 1919–1929 von Martin Heidegger entwickelt wurde. Es folgt eine ausführliche Darstellung und Analyse der in Sein und Zeit ausgearbeiteten Daseinsontologie. Danach werden die Methode und die Daseinsontologie Heideggers benutzt, um sowohl die alltägliche Erfahrung des Ethischen als auch das ethisch erfahrende Seiende zu analysieren. Gemäß der hermeneutisch-phänomenologischen Methode bewegt sich die vorgenommene Analyse auf der ontologischen Ebene, was bedeutet, dass nicht der (ontische) Sachverhalt analysiert wird, sondern der in ihm bezeugte Sinn und die Seinsstrukturen des sinnbildenden Seienden. Die Ausarbeitung dieser Themen erlaubt es der vorliegenden Arbeit sowohl die verschiedenen Bedeutungen des Ethischen als auch die Bedingungen ihrer Erfahrung zu bestimmen.

Due to societal trends, such as digitalisation, platformisation, and active and co-creative audiences, new organisational practices have surfaced. This study examines how communication practitioners experience their changing work in a new communication environment in which participatory cultural norms are becoming standard in strategic communication. I argue that the requirements to produce audience engagement affect the communication work and the communication workers. This study uses the popular music industry as a case, and is based on interviews with communication practitioners as well as on the qualitative text analysis of reports and newsletters from the music marketing firm Music Ally to the music industry. The study shows that communication practitioners within the industry experience a duty to create audience engagement - an engagement imperative. Although the practitioners are highly skilled in digital communication and social media, they often see the development of digital promotional culture as a challenge and express a lack of a deeper understanding of engagement. This study highlights implications for their professional roles, competences, and identities as well as ethical implications regarding the exploitation of audiences in communication work.

As De Angelis, Federici, and others have noted, there are "no commons without community". The concept of community, however (as, among others, Jean‐Luc Nancy and Roberto Esposito have shown), has a dark history continuing up until today, when extreme right‐wing or even downright fascist appropriations of the concept have understood it as a static and identitarian unity bound to a specific territory or ethnicity. While commons‐scholars try to circumvent this legacy by emphasizing the commons as a "praxis" (Dardot and Laval) or "organizational principle" (De Angelis), they thereby tend to neglect the important cultural and symbolic connotations of the concept of community (which, in part, seem to make right‐wing movements appealing for certain segments of the population). In my article, I want to raise the following question: Do we need a sense of community for a politics of the commons, and, if so, what concept of community should it be? To answer this question, I will refer back to the use of the concept of "common sense" (sensus communis) in Immanuel Kant's Critique of Judgment. Characteristic of Kant's use of the term is that it does not refer to an actually existing community, but rather to an imaginary community that is anticipated in our (aesthetic) judgment. Common sense, in other words, involves "acting as if" - with the dual dimensions of acting (i.e., the community is based in praxis) and as if (an imagined, anticipated community bordering between the fictional and the real).

This article analyzes the relationship between religiosity and vaccine hesitancy by highlighting the role of a specific dimension of religiosity that makes some people more prone to explaining health conditions as a divine agency—the belief in the immanent presence of the divine in everyday life. Accordingly, these people may undervalue the role of vaccination as a solution to cope with a pandemic and may be more skeptical of vaccines. We suggest a mechanism explaining the relationship between religiosity and vaccine hesitancy by focusing on the mediating role of beliefs in conspiracy theories, given that belief in divine immanence and conspiracy theories share the common trait of attributing agency to hidden forces. Beliefs in conspiracy theories, in turn, have been shown to be among the strongest predictors of vaccine hesitancy. By using a moderated mediation analysis on Italian survey data collected during the Covid-19 pandemic, we show that such a mechanism helps explain the relationship between believing in divine immanence and vaccine hesitancy among people not adhering to institutional religiosity. In contrast, this mechanism does not apply when the immanent conception of the divine is framed within a system of beliefs belonging to institutional religion.

The world has made enormous moral progress since the 1980s. People emphasize universal emancipative values and freedom more. In this research, the role of media use and interpersonal communication therein is studied from a diffusion of innovations perspective. A secondary analysis of World Values Survey data from the Netherlands was conducted (N = 4281). Emancipative values are widely supported; however, worries about loss of freedom and moral regress increasingly lead to societal conflicts. The results show value gaps and different uses of media between adoption categories, especially between laggards and others. Multimedia use is correlated to supporting emancipative values. Early adopters use news media most, while early majority and laggards use digital media more. Outcomes such as lower levels of connectedness in combination with higher standard deviations for emancipative values indicate that media and interpersonal communication can help include laggards more in supporting emancipative values and resolving social conflicts.
