Der Effektive Altruismus (EA) ist eine im angelsächsischen Raum entstandene Philosophie bzw. Bewegung, die es für ethisch zentral hält, anderen aktiv zu helfen, indem die Anhänger so viel Gutes tun wie möglich. Das Spenden von Geld ist dabei das wichtigste Instrument. Im Fokus steht die Effektivität, die größtmögliche Wirkung einer Spende sowie eine hohe Reichweite. Einflussfaktoren auf den Spender, seine Einstellungen und Motive werden hierbei ausgeblendet und so spielen auch und gerade Emotionen im EA keine Rolle. Stattdessen werden betriebswirtschaftliche Rechnungen auf das Spenden angewandt. Darüber hinaus geht es im EA darum, ein möglichst ethisches Leben zu führen. Die Bewegung ist seit wenigen Jahren auch in Deutschland angekommen und im Begriff, sich zu verbreiten. Der Einfluss auf klassische, etablierte Nichtregierungsorganisationen (NRO), bei denen auch andere Faktoren als die reine Effektivität einer Spende im Mittelpunkt stehen, ist bisher nicht untersucht worden. Der Spendenmarkt ist durch einen hohen Wettbewerb gekennzeichnet. Ein neuer Akteur, wie der EA, könnte diesen weiter intensivieren. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es herauszufinden, welchen möglichen Einfluss der EA auf den Spender, und damit auf den Spendenmarkt, in Deutschland hat. Es wird deshalb analysiert, welche Motivation Spender antreibt und welche Leistungsmerkmale der spendenempfangenden NRO ihre Entscheidung beeinflussen. Der Fokus liegt auf privaten Spendern und engagierten Unternehmen. Der erste Teil der Arbeit besteht aus einer Literaturrecherche zum EA und stellt die theoretischen Grundlagen zum Spendenverhalten von Privatspendern und Unternehmen vor. Im Anschluss werden die aktuellen Daten des deutschen Spendenmarktes und die Trends vorgestellt. Der zweite Teil untersucht mithilfe von qualitativen Experteninterviews die hinter der Spendenhandlung stehenden Einstellungen und Motive. Die Ergebnisse der Interviews ergeben einen geringen Einfluss des EA auf die Privatspender im Allgemeinen. Im Rahmen der empirischen Untersuchung lassen sich jedoch zwei von insgesamt fünf Spendertypen nach West identifizieren, bei denen die Werte und Charakteristika des EA zumindest eine gewisse Relevanz habe. Bei den Unternehmensspendern ist der Einfluss im Vergleich noch geringer. Beide Zielgruppen messen jedoch der Wirkung ihres Engagements Bedeutung zu. Auf Grundlage des ersten und des zweiten Teils werden Handlungsempfehlungen für klassische NRO abgeleitet. Diese legen nahe, sich in einigen Aspekten des EAs zu bedienen, bedeutet von ihm zu lernen, sich jedoch in anderen Punkten gezielt von ihm abzugrenzen, um damit die eigene Position zu stärken.

Fundamental aspects of human existence such as birth and death are at the core of our values and profoundly sensitive to our religious beliefs, our ideals as a society, and our opinions on the extent to which individuals may interfere in these basic life issues. This article analyses the factors that explain people's attitudes towards key beginning- and end-of-life issues. To do this, we first tracked variations across two points in time, and then looked at the effects of value orientations and socio-demographic factors in comparative perspective across countries. Based on previous literature, we consider justification for euthanasia, abortion, and in vitro fertilisation as a latent variable using European Value Study data from the 2008 and 2017 waves. Five European societies were analysed: Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, and Russia. All the countries observed showed growing levels of justification for these practices, although significant differences were found in the value orientation effects and respondents´ background variables on attitudes towards life and death issues. In order to properly address comparability, multi-group confirmatory factor analyses across countries and across waves were conducted, and measurement invariance tested. From our analyses, we can conclude that age and religiosity, alongside other sociodemographic variables, are important explanatory factors in the justification of life and death issues in all the countries examined; however, value orientations show less conclusive effects on such attitudes.

Die Kölner Silvesternacht 2015/2016 ist zur Chiffre für fragwürdiges Verhalten von Journalisten geworden. Am Beispiel der Herkunftsnennung mutmaßlicher Straftäter in der Berichterstattung diskutiert die empirische Studie zentrale Fragen journalistischer Informationsselektion, Qualitätsstandards und Handlungslogik. Die Verfasserin analysiert 1075 Artikel aus elf Tageszeitungen, zeichnet die Abwägungsprozesse der Journalistinnen und Journalisten mittels qualitativer Leitfadeninterviews nach und stellt die grundsätzliche Frage nach den ethischen Maßstäben journalistischen Handelns. Heike Haarhoff, promovierte Medienwissenschaftlerin und langjährige Zeitungsredakteurin, schließt mit dem vorliegenden Buch eine Lücke im Bereich der Journalismusforschung.

»Da muss ich noch an mir arbeiten!« Doch an was genau wollen wir eigentlich arbeiten, wenn wir solche Vorsätze postulieren? Eva Georg liefert hierzu eine Analyse der Konstitution des (neo-)liberalen Subjekts im Kontext einer »Therapeutisierung der Gesellschaft«. Unter Bezugnahme auf Michel Foucault, die Quantenphysikerin Karen Barad und die buddhistische Philosophie nimmt sie eine Neuverhandlung der Frage nach der »Arbeit am Selbst« vor. Dabei adressiert sie ethische und feministische Debatten um die Relationalität von Subjektivität ebenso wie eine postkoloniale Perspektivierung westlicher Buddhismus-Rezeptionen - und liefert einen innovativen Beitrag für das noch junge Feld der Beratungswissenschaften, den Neuen Kritischen Materialismus sowie die Praxis von Psychotherapie, Beratung und Coaching.

Diskussionen um die Normativität von Sozialforschung gehen häufig von der Vorannahme aus, dass Werte und Fakten einander äußerlich sind. Auf Basis (neo-)pragmatischer Überlegungen schlägt dieser Beitrag demgegenüber die Unhintergehbarkeit von Werten in der sozialwissenschaftlichen Wissensproduktion als möglichen Ausgangspunkt einer Soziologie der Sozialforschung vor. Epistemische Werte erlauben Koordination und Bewertung im Forschungsprozess. Diese Werte sind keine Frage subjektiver Vorlieben, sondern "objektiv". Sie müssen sich im sozialen Vollzug der Forschung zur Bewältigung ungewisser Situationen bewähren und sind als historisch geformte Handlungsressourcen intersubjektiv verfügbar und kritisierbar. Die Frage nach den Werten, die Forschungsprozessen ihre Form geben, wäre damit empirisch (nicht "normativ") zu beantworten. Diese wissenschaftsimmanenten Werte sind nicht von umfassenderen oder tiefer liegenden normativen Ordnungen zu trennen, die im Rahmen der Soziologie der Konventionen als Konventionen bezeichnet werden. Im französischen Neopragmatismus sind die sogenannten Konventionen als alltagspraktische Ressource für die Kritik und Legitimierung untersucht worden. Die Diskussion epistemischer Werte führt daher zwangsläufig zur Frage der Kritik, die ihrerseits nicht mit Bezug auf eine transzendente Wahrheit, sondern nur konkret und "realistisch" beantwortet werden kann.

There is a peculiar relationship between contemporary poetry and perspectives that are deemed to be heretical by conservative audiences. This relationship is not fully accounted for by current anthropological theories of the secular. The field of literature has been successfully studied as a secular institution – both in the sense of the differentiation of institutions as well as in the sense of the subordination of the religious to the political. Such secularity appears as a rather safe, less controversial way to claim the power of some human entities in relation to God. Some poetry, by contrast, may be accused of heresy or unbelief even when written with pious intention. This suggests a dimension to being secular that is more offensive to conservative societal sensibilities, as it contrasts with deeply-held views on the proper form of the God-human relationship and the associated imaginaries, languages, and aesthetics. Based on a combination of ethnographic research in historical context and a theoretical focus on aesthetics and imagination of divine power as a constituent of human lives, it is proposed in this article that in addition to looking at state power, institutions, and the creation of a secular aesthetic normality, it is also necessary to look more closely at issues of faith, including heretical faith.

Proces sekularizacije je učinio da klasična religioznost izgubi svoju tradicionalno dominantnu poziciju. Tu poziciju preuzimaju oblici tzv. svetovne religioznosti. Prema našem mišljenju, svetovna religioznost nije prepoznata u Srbiji kao religioznost postmodernog doba, već pre kao oblik prilagođenosti religije uslovima postmodernizma. Otuda smatramo da je klasična religioznost u Srbiji i dalje dominantna. Stav i poverenje prema crkvi upravo tumačimo kao konvencionalnu religioznost. Stav i poverenje prema crkvi sagledavamo kroz dva pitanja. Prvo pitanje meri stav prema crkvi kroz dvovalentno izražavanje stava o tome da li crkva daje odgovore na moralna pitanja, duhovne potrebe, porodične i socijalne probleme. Drugo pitanje tiče se poverenja u crkvu. Oba pitanja smo merili u odnosu na obrazovanje, pol, na relaciji ruralno/urbano i u odnosu na pripadnost religijskim konfesijama. U radu smo se oslanjali na analizu sekundarnih podataka EVS-a (European Value Study) na bazi anketne metode u svim državama Evrope. Hipoteze od kojih smo pošli u radu bile su da se sa povećanjem nivoa obrazovanja smanjuje stepen poverenja u crkvu a da je stav prema crkvi negativniji, da je kod žena pozitivniji stav prema crkvi i veće poverenje nego kod muškaraca, da je viši stepen poverenja i pozitivniji stav prema crkvi u selu nego u gradu i da je viši stepen poverenja i pozitivan stav prema crkvi, odnosno prema verskim zajednicama, kod muslimana nego kod pravoslavaca, katolika i protestanata. Teorijski, naše pretpostavke su zasnovane na teoriji sekularizacije. U tom smislu, društvene promene su umanjile uticaj religije u društvu, a na pojedince se deluje mehanizmima profanog društva. Fokusirali smo se na građane Srbije, gde su uticaji tranzicije poziciju religije učinili složenijom.

In this chapter, Dr. Hicks describes events of Spring and Summer of 2015 that marked the turning point in the institutional response to the institutional turbulence under Dr. DePinho. The Faculty Senate and the Division heads had been advocating for more of role in decision making, and the situation had become serious enough that UT System Chancellor McCraven visited in the spring. The Faculty Senate issued a White Paper (https://cancerletter.com/articles/20150713_1/) outlining issues underlying low faculty morale. Chancellor McCraven issued an invitation for a group of three members of the Executive Committee and three division heads to come to Austin to discuss the White Paper. This meeting led directly to the formation of the shared governance model. Dr. Hicks describes the mood of the meeting and the impact of the chancellor stepping in.||Next, Dr. Hick talks about the first actions taken by the newly formed Shared Governance Committee: addressing issues of confidentiality of meetings, defining committee identity and principles, and creating a strategic plan from the Faculty Senate White Paper. He notes that the committee divided into two (informal) groups: one was committed to looking at issues of culture and communication and the other more focused on the scientific and clinical activities at the institution. The concerns of the first group were eventually dropped by the SGC, however Dr. Hicks, who was part of the group, says they continued meeting to discuss how the climate of the institution could be changed to stress how people come together and work together to save the institution.||Next, Dr. Hicks talks about the impact of McChrystal Group in 2016. Dr. Hicks explains how he became aware of the book, Team of Teams, by General Stanley McChrystal, who was then invited to MD Anderson to speak when the SCG was still new. In this chapter, Dr. Hicks reviews the assessment that the McChrystal Group performed (2016) to support the Shared Governance Committee as it restructured MD Anderson [document in Supplementary]. He reviews their key points: a lack of trust and transparency; siloing and lack of alignment; problems with accountability; and problems with communication. Dr. Hicks begins this session by explaining how he was offered to opportunity to become interim president of MD Anderson after Dr. Ronald DePinho [oral history interview] resigned. He explains his reasoning for accepting this role and clarifies how he saw his mandate for this short-term position. He notes that UT System did not intervene in MD Anderson's change process. He describes the steps taken to use a team approach to turn around the financial crisis and return the focus of the institution to core values, multi-disciplinary care, and patient care.||Dr. Hicks discusses his working relationship with COO, Stephen Hahn, MD and the other members of the team he worked most closely with. He explains how Ben Nelson was selected to become CFO.||Next he discusses how a new administrative structure emerged from the joint work of the President's Leadership Team, the McChrystal Group, and the Shared Governance Committee. He also describes the process of requesting input on the proposed structure from the UT System Chancellor and the Board of Visitors. This article proposes an articulation between the conceptions of information literacy and a cultural and social approach of critical thinking, implemented through an original methodological approach of analysis and cartography of controversies. We begin by discussing some dimensions of the digital environment that affect the definition and consideration of the fields of Information Literacy (IL) and Critical Thinking (CI) and their articulation. We go on to present a state of the literature on critical thinking that reflects divergent visions. We extend this reflection by proposing a synthesis of the convergences between the concepts of information literacy and critical thinking and a form of articulation between the two fields. Subsequently, we present a reflexive analysis of our teachings on controversies at university since 2014, and which constitute an adequate support for teaching our cultural, social and creative approach of critical thinking.

Der Artikel gibt einen Überblick über den Zusammenhang zwischen Konsum und der Herausbildung politischer Gemeinschaften bei Karl Marx, Pierre Bourdieu und Ernesto Laclau und Chantal Mouffe. Für Marx ist die Konsumption in kapitalistischen Gesellschaften konstiutiv für die Herausbildung des Klassenwiderspruches zwischen Arbeit und Kapital. Auch Bourdieu analysiert die Rolle des Konsumierens in Hinblick auf ihre klassenbildende Funktion. Er wendet sich jedoch von einem rein materialistischen Konsumptionsverständnis ab und betont die symbolisch-kulturelle Dimension des Konsumierens für die Herausbildung von Klassen in modernen Gesellschaften. Anders als Bourdieu geben Laclau/Mouffe einen Ausblick auf die Frage, wie sich unterschiedliche soziale Positionen auf der Grundlage einer Vervielfältigung sozialer Antagonismen zusammenschließen, um neue Gemeinschaftsformen zu bilden.

Ziel des Kapitels ist es zu diskutieren, wie sich online hinterlassene digitale Spuren in ihrer Komplexität auf eine Weise kontextualisieren lassen, dass man sie in ihrem sozialen Bedeutungsgehalt analysieren kann. Hierzu werden nach einer allgemeinen Diskussion der dabei bestehenden Herausforderungen am Beispiel von Schulinformationssystemen mögliche Strategien der sozialen Kontextualisierung von automatisch generierten Daten herausgearbeitet. Kernargument ist, dass für eine solche Kontextualisierung qualitative Daten notwendig sind und damit eine Triangulation von Analysen großer Datenmengen mit qualitativen Verfahren. Ausgehend von solchen Analysen werden im Fazit des Beitrags hieraus Linien zukünftiger methodischer Entwicklungen im Bereich der Forschung zu digitaler Datenspuren aufgezeigt.

This article draws from John Dewey's philosophy of education, ideas about democracy and pragmatist assumptions to explain how his articles for The New Republic functioned pedagogically. Taking media as a mode of public pedagogy, and drawing extensively from Dewey's Democracy and Education, as well as from his book The Public and its Problems, the article explores the relationships between communication, education and democracy using the expanded conceptions of all the aforementioned advanced by Dewey. Borrowing insights from Randolph Bourne, who used Dewey's own ideas to criticize his mentor's influence on intellectuals who supported US involvement in World War I, the analysis explores the contradictions within Dewey's public pedagogy. The article suggests Dewey's relevance as a public intellectual in the liberal-progressive press, his view of the State and some of his related presuppositions produced a tension in his thought, delimiting democratic possibilities while simultaneously pointing toward greater democratic potentials. The essay concludes by suggesting that learning from both Dewey and Bourne prompts us to get beyond the former's public/private dualism to realize what he called the "Great Community" by communicating and practicing the Commons.

Agent-based modeling has become a common and well-established tool in the social sciences and certain of the humanities. Here, we aim to provide an overview of the different modeling approaches in current use. Our discussion unfolds in two parts: we first classify different aspects of the model-building process and identify a number of characteristics shared by most agent-based models in the humanities and social sciences; then we map relevant differences between the various modeling approaches. We classify these into different dimensions including the type of target systems addressed, the intended modeling goals, and the models' degree of abstraction. Along the way, we provide reference to related debates in contemporary philosophy of science.
