A review essay on 27 political psychology syllabi calls attention to the recent rise in course offerings & attempts to locate political psychology as a subfield. The 22 undergraduate- & five graduate-course syllabi share a central concern for understanding the relationship between human nature & political phenomena. However, the multiple ways this concern is addressed present challenges of substantive coherence & syllabus design & reveal some tension between the parent disciplines. Nonetheless, an excellent match was found between what political psychologists do & what they teach. Specific issues discussed include the challenge of scope; debate over whether political psychology is merely applied psychology; the focus on American politics; lack of attention to solutions to group conflict; & pedagogical consequences of treating political psychology as a distinct subfield. The syllabi examined point to a vast & dynamic subfield in a productive stage of its development. They also reveal "new classics" & innovative research that is shedding light on political realities that emerge from interactions among people & institutions. 1 Table, 74 References. J. Lindroth

Notes on America's influence on Australian politics used as the basis for a talk given at the Gaelic Club in Sydney on 22 October 2004 exhibit mixed feelings about whether America's increasing influence on Australian politics should be lessened. Matters considered include the long relationship between Australia & the US; the historical importance of the US to Australian trade/enterprise; Australia's desperation to form close defense links with America in the early 20th century; & the American view of Australia as a "social laboratory" during President Theodore Roosevelt's administration. Attention is also given to Australia's historical fear of Asia; the inadequacy of Australia's return for a treaty with Japan; the disastrous Free Trade Treaty; Australia's failure to become an important broker in the world; domination of Australia's political culture by American technology; & the resilience of capitalism. Audience questions following the talk indicated an understanding of the many nuances in the America-Australian relationship as well as a fear that Australian political parties are being stolen by American media capitalists. This Research Note examines the role democracy plays in explaining the disparity in educational attainment between men and women in a cross-national context. Policies designed to improve education figure prominently in recent attempts by governments, international institutions and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to stimulate economic development. The recent emphasis on education is grounded in a well-established literature in economics on the rate of return on investment in education and in a fairly new stream of research in economics – endogenous growth theory – that suggests knowledge is the generative force of economic growth. Although a majority of the work in both literatures focuses on aggregate levels of educational attainment (usually enrolment ratios or literacy rates), a growing body of evidence identifies women's educational attainment relative to men's as a crucial variable in explaining the wide variation in economic development throughout the world. In addition to its direct impact on economic growth, women's education may indirectly affect economic performance in a number of important ways: through its impact on health, fertility and infant mortality. Previous empirical work shows that women's education has a strong negative effect on fertility and infant mortality. Moreover, family health practices improve in direct proportion to female education. According to the World Bank, countries that achieved universal primary education for boys in 1965 but lagged far behind in educating girls had about twice the infant mortality and fertility rates in 1985 of countries with smaller gender gaps.

The Internet is often viewed as a replacement for "old" modes of communication, a tool used by news seekers, including public officials, to bypass traditional news media. However, the authors show that the arrival of this "new" media has not caused officials to forsake journalists & abandon traditional media. Instead, they are utilizing the Web as a new method for seeking coverage from the old media. By conducting a content analysis of the official Web sites of every member of the U.S. Congress, the authors reveal that about three-quarters of these legislators explicitly employ their site to try to attract journalists & traditional reporting. In addition, the authors examine the types of features that are included to make congressional Web sites "media friendly" & the extent to which each of these is used by members. Finally, they discuss some of the factors that explain the variance among legislators in regard to their use of Web sites for this purpose. 4 Tables, 22 References. In Nyanza Province, Kenya, estimated HIV prevalence is 22%. Given that more than 80% of the population resides in rural areas, the majority of individuals in Nyanza Province do not have access to medical facilities on a regular basis. In response to the growing demands the HIV epidemic has placed on the people and communities in this region, hundreds of lay individuals have been trained as community health workers to provide home-based care to sick or dying HIV/AIDS clients in rural areas. This paper discusses the role and impact of these community health workers in Nyanza Province, Kenya. It outlines the collaborative relationship between community health workers and the Ministry of Health, examining community health workers' use of extant biomedical structures at the district level to provide services that government-run health facilities lack the monetary resources or personnel to provide. Finally, it explores the role played by community health workers in providing HIV/AIDS education to individuals in an attempt to prevent further infections.

An introduction to a symposium on "Gender Quotas" points out the significant under-representation of women in political bodies, the growing use of gender quota systems to improve the situation, & the resulting increase in the number of women represented in national legislatures. Various quota strategies are described, including constitutional quotas, election law quotas, & political party quotas. An examination of the controversy surrounding gender quotas looks at both pragmatic concerns about political party quotas & normative concerns that focus on gender, representation, & democracy. The contributors to this symposium discuss gender quotas from different political & research perspectives. Most of the papers came out of the European Consortium for Political Research Workshop on Gender Quotas held in Geneva 19-22 September 2002. Focal points of the workshop included the conditions under which quotas are adopted; the institutional process of adoption; implementation strategies; & the consequences of quotas. Different methodological approaches are explored, noting that the articles in this symposium demonstrate the richness of research being conducted in the field. References. J. Lindroth
