Natural disasters push ordinary gender disparities to the extreme--leaving women not only to deal with a catastrophe's aftermath, but also at risk for greater levels of domestic violence, displacement, and other threats to their security and well-being. Elaine Enarson presents a comprehensive assessment, encompassing both theory and practice, of how gender shapes disaster vulnerability and resilience.

What makes people gay, lesbian, bisexual, or heterosexual? And who cares? These are the twin themes of Queer Science, a scientific and social analysis of research in the field of sexual orientation. Written by one of the leading scientists involved in this research, it looks at how scientific discoveries about homosexuality influence society's attitude toward gays and lesbians, beginning with the theories of the German sexologist and gay-rights pioneer Magnus Hirschfeld and culminating with the latest discoveries in brain science, genetics, and endocrinology, and cognitive psychology. Research into homosexuality exemplifies both the promise and the danger of science applied to human nature. LeVay argues that the question of causation should not be the crucial issue in the gay-rights debate, but that science does have an important contribution to make. It can help to demonstrate that the traditional and still prevalent view of homosexuality - as a mere set of behaviors that anyone might show - is inadequate, and that gays and lesbians are in a real sense a distinct group of people within the larger society with a privileged insight into their own natures

This volume is the first book-length explication of hermeneutics in social work. It attempts to clarify and reconstruct the moral basis of social work. Against the mainstream current of doing social work with the technical-rational outlook, this book argues that value constitutes the very core of social work. It is with this solid foundation of moral concepts that social work techniques are reconstituted. This volume seamlessly combines theoretical discussions with empirical studies. It starts with a theoretical inquiry that combines hermeneutics and critical theory and examines the moral nature of social work. It then extends the theoretical analysis to empirical research on mental illness, cancer, community development and social work management. Redefining the relationship between theory and practice, the discussion on first-person value involvement and dialogical mode of understanding will inspire social workers to develop their professional practice in a new light. This volume will capture the attention of both social work scholars and frontline social work practitioners. The hermeneutic point of view will also be of interest to readers/students of social theory and social research

Although highly-skilled migration is not a central issue in Mauritania, it nonetheless attracts attention because of its bearing on the competitiveness of the labour market there, the poor performance of national economic policies and the prevailing governmental system. Whilst Mauritania is not a transit or destination country for qualified migrants, educated Mauritanian religious elites in several Muslim countries are certainly worth mentioning. Statistical information for these trends remains, however, scarce. Another category of qualified expatriates is the skilled Mauritanian Diaspora in high-tech sectors in northern countries. A significant number of politically-exiled Mauritanian immigrants, who might be said to be part of a national brain drain, should also be taken into account. These categories of qualified nationals actively participate in political and social debates in the homeland and have, at times, an impact there. This has led Mauritanian government officials to express growing interest in skilled nationals settled abroad. Due to the country's political instability, this interest remains though sporadic. Mauritanian elites residing abroad strive, with limited success, to coordinate their activities with a view to contributing to the country's development.
The scientific topicality. The development of Ukrainian musical art was thoroughly reflected in the various thematic newspaper materials of the composer, social and educational activist, pianist, and critic Nestor Nyzhankivskyi. The cultural, thematic content of the Galician author's journalism, which revealed the importance of musical influence on the formation of national artistic value orientations, has become especially relevant in our present.
The purpose of the article is to outline the development of musical culture in the 1930-s at the beginning of the XX century in Eastern Galicia through the prism of the press publications "Paths of the Ukrainian music development (In response to Mr. Anton Rudnytskyi)" and "Our musical pains" by Nestor Nyzhankivskyi, in which a social and educational figure defines a holistic worldview of cultural problems of the specified historical era.
The methodology. The following methodology was applied when analyzing the mentioned publications of N. Nyzhankivsky: method of analysis and synthesis — for the study of sources from the history of musical art of Eastern Galicia of first third of the XX century; descriptive method — for revealing the content of music-critical materials; classifications and typologies — to characterize the analyzed newspapers publications; the method of systematization was used to generalize the results of the study and make conclusions. The combination of these methods made it possible to investigate the trends in the development of Nyzhankivsky's music journalism in close connection with the socio-aesthetic paradigms of the time.
The results. Among the voluminous journalistic heritage of N. Nyzhankivskyi, the press publications "Our musical pains" and "Paths of the Ukrainian music development (In response to Mr. Anton Rudnytskyi)" stand out, which were published in the pages of the magazine "Dilo" in the 1930-s. The content of these newspaper materials, which contain rich, informative material regarding the definition of the educational role of art and the understanding of the high professional level of composer's work in the musical culture of Eastern Galicia at the beginning of the XX century, determines their cultural significance. It has been established that these socio-cultural press publications have axiological potential, which translates the system of values into the public space of the Ukrainian people.
The scientific novelty consists in the fact that, for the first time, the content of the journalistic materials of N. Nyzhankivskyi is considered through the prism of sociocultural factors that took place in the artistic life of Lviv in the 1930s of the early XX century.
Conclusions. Nestor Nyzhankivskyi's press releases "Our musical pains" and "Paths of the Ukrainian music development (In response to Mr. Anton Rudnytskyi)", which covered various aspects of musical life, played an essential role in shaping the national worldview in the multi-ethnic environment of Eastern Galicia at the beginning of the XX century. The cultural aspects of the analyzed journalistic works of Nestor Nyzhankivskyi have a significant value for modern science, as they confirm the value of Ukrainian music in the world space and emphasize the importance of human existence in culture.
Ethnic divisions have existed for generations. Discusses various types in pre-industrial society and in Europe in the Nineteenth century through the theories of social scientists. Argues that ethnic minorities can assert their claims with greater impunity today because of the world economy and polity. Ethnic nationalism in its extreme manifestation of a 'liberation movement' is capable of becoming the catalyst for international conflict and even world war. (AM)
This volume examines the rise of online memorial groups - virtual communities formed in the aftermath of tragic events - speaking to the notion that individual expression has become more visible and ubiquitous than ever before within a communication context. The book asserts the audience as decidedly active with users seeking a robust platform for expression and takes particular care to consider the central role of communication technology in the ways that individuals are remembering and forgetting in the aftermath of crises. This emerging social practice has profound implications for journalists, journalism scholars, and journalism educators.
This paper looks at refugee children in Germany, drawing on results of an interview-based research project. Areas covered include how the children learn German & the role of bilingual skills; friendships & contacts at school; the degree of integration in the local neighborhood; how traumatic experiences are dealt with; the effects of lack of secure residential status; the specific situation of unaccompanied minors. One of the salient features of refugee children's lives is the state of constant uncertainty as regards the future & life planning. It increases the psychological pressure inherent in life stories already characterized by flight, social dislocation, & social & cultural uprootedness. 9 References. Adapted from the source document.
