Religious Appeals in Power Politics examines how states use, or attempt to use, confessional appeals to religious belief and conscience to advance political strategies and objectives. Through case studies of the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Russia, Peter S. Henne demonstrates that religion, although not as high profile or well-funded a tool as economic sanctions or threats of military force, remains a potent weapon in international relations. Public policy analysis often minimizes the role of religion, favoring military or economic matters as the "important" arenas of policy debate. As Henne shows, however, at transformative moments in political history, states turn to faith-based appeals to integrate or fragment international coalitions. Headlines this week have included "Was Occupy Wall Street the 'Beginning of the Beginning'?" (NY Times), "Occupy Wall Street Won the Future" (WSJ, opinion), "Lessons from Occupy Wall Street for today's tax fight" (The Hill), "Occupy Wall Street Did More Than You Think (The Atlantic). In The Democracy Ethos: Authenticity and Instrumentalism in US Movement Rhetoric after Occupy, A. Freya Thimsen asks the question implicit in these headlines: ten years later, what were the lasting impacts of Occupy? If it is evaluated solely in terms of specific, near-term policy outcomes, it cannot help but be found wanting. But the longer view, Thimsen argues, suggests that the democratic ethos consolidated and disseminated by the Occupy demonstrations plays an important role in the way that more mainstream US pro-democracy advocacy groups disclose their practices of self-organization in order to prove their commitment to democracy. The democratic ethos, she says, is a flexible, repeatable set of rhetorical tactics. The book begins by contrasting the democratic ethos drawing on Left radicalism and liberal instrumentalism that was consolidated in the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations of 2011, and the "ironic instrumentalism" of the "Democracy Vouchers" used in the 2017 Seattle municiple elections--a pro-democracy strategy to reform campaign finance enacted through the undemocratic means of large private donations. In subsequent chapters, Thimsen shows how the democratic ethos born from Occupy has been adapted by collective actors working in the existing political system--in the contexts of amending the Constitution, Bernie Sanders's 2016 presidential campaign, and the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund's work to provide legal aid to municipalities fighting corporate incursion. While Occupy began as a startling disruption in politics as usual, its long-term importance rests in how its performative techniques have been folded into more common, less "interruptive" forms of politics. In this book Pragati Rawat and John C. Morris identify and evaluate the impact of factors that can help explain the difference in e-participation, public participation using information and communication technology, in different countries. While cross-sectional studies have been covered, few have taken an in-depth look at cross-national studies. This book attempts to fill the gap using quantitative panel data to explore the influence of technology and institutions, and the impact of their complex relationships in a mediation and moderation analysis, on e-participation. The current study reviews the scholarly work in the field of "offline" and "online participation" to identify a set of antecedents that influence e-participation. A conceptual framework is developed, supported by the theories from the public policy and socio-technical premise. The authors utilize secondary data, primarily from the UN and World Economic Forum, for 143 countries from three waves of surveys to measure the dependent and explanatory variables. The panel data is statistically analyzed and findings reveal the role of technology as a mediator as well as a moderator for institutions' impact on e-participation. "This book investigates how mineral resources can be governed to promote people-centred development in Ghana, focusing on the three main human development variables: living standards, education and health. Ghana is endowed with abundant mineral resources. The mineral sector accounts for about 14% of total tax revenue, driven mostly by an increase in export earnings from the gold sector and the commencement of crude oil exports. However, the country has not yet been able to use its natural resources to promote human development, and the majority of the population still lives on less than $2 a day. This book argues for a paradigm shift in the discussion of mineral resources, one that looks to govern natural resources in such a way as to improve standards of living, health, education, income levels, empowerment, quality of work and threats from violence. The human-centred mineral resource governance approach developed by the book will not only be useful to Ghana, but can also be applied to other mineral-rich countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.
