Replies to William D. Berry et al.'s "The Measurement and Stability of State Citizen Ideology" (2007). It is argued that Berry et al.'s index of citizen ideology is not a direct measure of citizen preferences or a measure of candidate positions, but rather it measures the ideological tendencies of state congressional delegations. In this light, the relationship between Berry et al.'s citizen ideology scores & state ideological identification is examined, pooling 27 years of CBS News/New York Times survey data., along with the measurement of ideological change, demonstrating that relative state-to-state differences in ideological preferences are very stable, while citizen ideology is not. It is contended that measuring state ideology from polls is better than inferring it from interest groups ratings of the roll call voting of state congressional delegations. In addition, there is a risk of misleading results when Berry et al.'s citizen ideology measure is used in regression analyses as a predictor of state policy or other variables. Figures, References. Replies to comments on the author's (2007) challenge to Paul Brace et al.'s (2004) article on the measurement of state citizen ideology. After outlining three of Brace et al.'s claims that the authors take issue with, attention is given to commentators' assertions that are deemed factually incorrect or that fundamentally mischaracterize Berry et al.'s measure. In addition, commentators' challenges to Berry et al.'s claims regarding the stability of state citizen ideology are answered. Tables, References. D. Edelman
