Explores the use of exit polling as a teaching tool in political science courses. Students from different types of political science classes at California State U at Northridge, Tulane U, U of Iowa, & U of Wisconsin administered the same exit polls to voters during the 2000 US presidential election. Success collecting the surveys varied due to different circumstances, including early closure of the CA poll station because of nearby gang violence. The focus was on how students felt about participating in the poll & whether it affected their perceptions of the election, survey research, & political science in general. Steps involved in organizing class exit polls are described, along with the advantages of experiential learning; survey content; & challenges involved in undertaking such a project. The results showed students were basically positive about the experience although there were interesting differences between the universities & between different courses. Suggestions are offered for ways to improve class exit polling. 4 Tables, 8 References. J. Lindroth
