Algeria's strategy regarding Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) is built on the heritage of the civil war of the 1990s. It consists of engaging in armed combat with the most radical terrorist groups and holding out a hand to the moderates who are likely to put down their arms. Alger has tried to apply this mixture of repression and dialogue in the Malian crisis. Ansar Dine's double dealing led Algerian authorities to help French military intervention.
