"The first edition of Real Econometrics attempted to reduce math anxiety for students learning applied statistical techniques. Beginning with the assumption that students will learn more if they start with experiments and see how the statistical enterprise is used to approximate certain features of the experimental process, the book gives students a chance to explore policy questions at every step of the way. The response to this approach has been tremendous. Instructors appreciate the author's reliance on endogeneity as a founding concept, his more conversational and sometimes humorous writing style, and the diversity of examples and hands-on work. Political Science professors understand "Real Stats" as a book that will bridge their students from their earlier course on basic statistics to more advanced econometric techniques. One of the early reviewers described the book as "a stats book that ... really just cuts to the chase instead of wasting time on probablity theory and chi squares." For instructors teaching a research methods course to graduate students or upper level undergraduates in political science, public policy, or law, this is a welcome and badly needed approach. For this second edition of Real Stats, suggestions from reviewers will be considered carefully. The book may contain too much material for the typical political science oriented class, and it will not need some of the additional content planned for the revision of Real Economtrics such as advanced time series concepts. However, an expanded appendix (or early chapter introduction) reviewing probabilty and statistics, additional coverage of data presentation, the addition of conceptual exercises to balance out the mostly mathematical problems, and the inclusion of more code and guidance for R software are all likely improvements."

A response to Matthew Watson's critique of Dolowitz's "Prosperity and Fairness? Can New Labour Bring Fairness to the 21st Century by following the Dictates of Endogenous Growth?" (2004), contends that the link between economic models & social scientific observations supports both the argument developed in the article & its methodological approach. The increasing complexity of endogenous growth theory in no way eliminates the logic of the argument that New Labour is following the dictates of an endogenous growth model. There is also disagreement with Watson's claims that it's not possible to link economic theory to policy observations & endogenous growth has nothing to do with wider political goals. Although Watson is correct when he says no government is a slave to economic models, it is maintained that ideology affects how governments interpret their role in shaping social outcomes. It is concluded that political scientists have the advantage of being able to employ a variety of theoretical models drawn from a wide range of social scientific disciplines in their attempt to explain empirical observations. 16 References. This article specifically examines the role of national political parties in the light of European integration. It introduces the functions that are normally associated with parties, which allows for a systematic evaluation of the performance of national parties in the European Union. Probing these functions that parties are reputed to implement, it arrives at the conclusion that national parties are fairly unsuccessful in fulfilling their core tasks at the European level.

In this article the author problematizes Rousseau's Discourse on Political Econ- omy and his conception of government in the political community. Rousseau's Discourse on Political Economy was chronologically written seven years before his major work The Social Contract or Principles of Political Right. Regardless of the fact that the Discourse on Political Economy was published earlier, it left a re- markable trace in Rousseau's philosophical opus. In this work, which was pub- lished as part of the fifth volume of Encyclopedia of the Enlightenment, Rousseau indicated his direction in political philosophy. This philosophical and political direction began with the Discourse on Political Economy and culminated in the philosophical and political conception of republicanism, elaborated in detail in The Social Contract. In this article the author uses critical analysis and recon- struction to establish Rousseau's fundamental ideas about his political philoso- phy present in the Discourse on Political Economy, with a focus on observing and studying the role of a sovereign and the public economy in the function of the government by general will within the political community.

PAPER ON THE POLITICAL SCIENCE "COMMUNITY", DATA ARE DRAWN FROM THREE MAJOR SURVEYS SPONSORED IN 1969 BY THE CARNEGIE COMMISSION ON HIGHER EDUCATION OF FACULTY, GRADUATE STUDENTS, AND UNDERGRADUATES, ANY ASSESSMENT OF THE STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS OF THE PERFORMANCE OF A DISCIPLINE REQUIRES BOTH STUDENT AND FACULTY JUDGMENTS.

ABSTRACTA community of practice is where a group works together toward a shared goal. This article argues that Twitter hosts a community of practice within political science and international relations. This occurs in three key ways: (1) offering an area to share feelings about our role as educators, (2) connecting to a wider network of educators in our discipline (and other disciplines), and (3) providing a space to proffer practical support. This has been especially true during the current COVID-19 pandemic, when many educators are teaching remotely and potentially feeling cut off from colleagues and students at their institution. In more normal times, Twitter also offers a valuable means of connecting with other scholars in the discipline across the world, providing a space to learn from and support one another. The article concludes by reflecting on what this might mean for continued professional development in the political science and international relations discipline.

Because of the devolution of tasks and powers from the national political level to subnational levels, subnational governments such as municipalities and provinces are increasingly compelled to express their interests in the national and European arenas. However, to achieve substantial weight, authority, receptiveness, and success in both arenas, active cooperation with other subnational authorities is needed. The question is to what extent subnational authorities acknowledge this need for cooperation and how this cooperation is being organized and structured. More specifically, in this study, the function and role of collective public affairs (PA) activities are investigated. Qualitative interviews with 17 PA professionals and 24 PA practitioners, experienced in working for subnational authorities, were held to find out how subnational governments in the Netherlands together organize PA in both arenas. The results show that subnational cooperation is of ultimate importance for creating a favorable position in these arenas. Such cooperation is favorable if subnational authorities together constitute a clear profile and render thematic collaboration in which the citizen is seen as the most important stakeholder. Further, the level of knowledge concerning the national and European arenas should be optimal among all parties involved in which the PA professional serves as a liaison officer who connects the various stakeholders.
