AbstractThis study examines the nature of collective action (unionisation) in the manufacturing sector in Singapore, using the social psychological analytical framework as proposed by Guest and Dewe (1988). It was found that among the four explanations of union joining, influence from colleagues emerged as the most important discriminator between members and non-members. This was followed by the costs and benefits of joining a union. Employee dissatisfaction as well as personal and job characteristics did contribute to the prediction of membership status but were of lesser significance. Implications of the findings highlighted the need to further our understanding of how group dynamics affect the unionisation process and how current recruitment strategies can be improved. With a sound appreciation of the demand for and supply of union services in Singapore, this will bring present membership growth to even newer heights.

Este ensayo representa un esfuerzo por vincular las preocupaciones de los historiadores laborales latinoamericanos con aquellas de los historiadores laborales en los Estados Unidos. Los estudios laborales en América Latina y los Estados Unidos se han desarrollado en gran medida por separado. Ambos deben mucho más el ejemplo establecido por la historia laboral europea que el uno al otro. En la medida en que existe la comunicación y la fecundación mutua entre los historiadores laborales en el hemisferio, por lo general éstas han sido un camino de una sola vía transitado por los latinoamericanistas que viven en los Estados Unidos. Bergquist sostiene que las historiografías liberal y marxista en los Estados Unidos generalmente ignoran las conexiones entre el imperialismo de finales del siglo pasado y la presión de importantes movimientos sociales de la época en ese país. Walter LaFeber, alumno de William Appleman Williams, escapa a estos problemas en su trabajo seminal publicado en 1963 y titulado The New Empíre. Desafortunadamente el argumento de LaFeber sobre los orígenes sociales del imperialismo estadounidense no ha sido asimilado por numerosos académicos como señala este artículo.

Researchers have been addressing social judgment from a cognitive perspective for more than 15 years. Within recent years, however, it has become increasingly clear that many of the models and assumptions initially adopted are in need of revision. Las subculturas activistas en las redes sociales se han venido caracterizando en los últimos años por un giro hacia las políticas de identidad. La pérdida de un horizonte emancipador ha favorecido el desarrollo de prácticas de acumulación de capital social en las redes, a la vez que ha fomentado un clima de moralismo que la llamada alt-right ha sabido debilitar en los momentos previos a las elecciones estadounidenses. Se analizan pues las formas en las que la interacción activista en red son prefiguradas por ciertas dinámicas del capitalismo neoliberal a fin de comprender mejor la reciente recuperación hegemónica por parte de la derecha. ; Activist subcultures on social media have been characterized in recent years by a turn towards identity politics. The loss of an emancipatory goal has favored the development of social capital accumulation practices online, as well as a strong atmosphere of moralism that could be debilitated by members of the so-called alt-right just before the US election campaign. Pourquoi des politiques de privatisation apparemment très formatées ont-elles provoqué, en Amérique latine, d'amples mouvements de protestation dans certains cas et pas dans d'autres ? En comparant deux privatisations des services urbains d'eau potable, cet article met au jour des ajustements différenciés entre les anciens systèmes de normes et d'attente et les nouveaux systèmes de normes néolibéraux (accommodement normatif versus choc normatif). La nature de ces ajustements n'a toutefois pas dépendu d'un véritable travail politique de légitimation, mais de la capacité à superposer des normes demeurant étrangères les unes aux autres. Il convient dès lors de distinguer nettement la légitimité de l'acceptabilité, phénomène social caractéristique des contextes démocratiques de basse intensité.

ABSTRACTMigration entails important changes for families. Despite existing evidence on the process of adaptation, little is known about the degree of social inclusion in a context of high cultural affinity. We examine the variability of social inclusion patterns, indexed by personal, family and social conditions, in 263 Latin American families, with at least one child under 12 years, migrating to Spain. Three profiles of social inclusion were identified using cluster analysis: High inclusion (32%), characterized by a good financial and job situation, low perception of economic difficulty, good social support and medium scores in attraction to neighbourhood and community belonging and high scores in neighbourly relationship. Partial inclusion (35%) was characterized by ratings of extreme economic difficulties and lack of job, high scores in perceived economic hardship, high scores in all types of social support (instrumental, emotional and affectionate support and positive social interaction) and high scores in attraction to neighbourhood and community belonging, and medium scores in neighbourly relationship. Finally, Low inclusion cluster (33%) was characterized by moderate economic difficulties and lack of a job, high scores in perceived economic hardship, low scores in all types of social support and low neighbourhood cohesion in all the factors. Multinomial logistic regression analysis showed that a model comprising family composition, size of social networks and years of residence in the community increased the probability of belonging to the Partial or Low inclusion profiles compared with the High inclusion one. In conclusion, the heterogeneity in the patterns of social inclusion and their intersection with family conditions suggests the need for targeted intervention actions to reduce the risk of social exclusion.

Cet exposé traite de l'importance des conséquences des différents modes d'occupation de logement, en ce qui concerne les rapports de classes. L'accent est mis précisément sur la Grande Bretagne où, environ 40% des ouvriers manuels possèdent maintenant leur propre maison, et où l'extension de l'occupation de l'habitation par le propriétaire a nettement contribué à accroitre les dividions sociales et politiques, au sein de la classe ouvrière. La question qui se pose, est de savoir si de telles divisions ont une base matérielle réelle, ou si elles sont principalement idéologiques. On voit que la réponse à cette question aura d'importantes conséquences pour l'organisation de luttes politiques autour de la question du logement. L'exposé débute par une discussion des perspectives wéberiennes et marxistes en matière d'occupation de logement et de rapports de classes. La perspective wébérienne, liée aux travaux de Rex et de Moore sur 'le logement par classes', est rejetée, quoique la possibilité de reformuler le concept du logement par classes, au sein d'une orientation wébérienne, soit mise en évidence. Le point de vue marxiste, qui rejette la possession du logement comme étant étrangère à l'identification des intérêts de classe, est également rejeté, sous prétexte que l'occupation de l'habitation par le propriétaire est un facteur crucial d'une augmentation réelles des richesses individuelles qui peuvent largement dépasser les économics que l'on peut faire sur les salaires de toute une vie. L 'exposé montre ensuite, comment la possession de sa maison va dans le sens d'une accumulation des richesses, et comment ceci crée une réelle division d'intérèt économique entre les propriétaires en jouissance et les locataires, fait qui se manifeste souvent dans les luttes politiques locales. La conclusion qui se dégage de ceci est que, les efforts des activistes locaux pour unifier les deux groupes en une alliance politique contre le capital monopole, peut sàvérer à la fois peu judicieux et nuisible à la productivité.
