Der englische Kulturhistoriker Peter Burke hat in seiner Studie über die "Augenzeugenschaft" von Bildern allerdings jüngst kritisiert, dass visuelle Darstellungen - seien es Gemälde, Grafiken oder auch Fotos - von Historikern immer noch zu selten dazu verwendet würden, tatsächlich "neue Antworten zu geben oder neue Fragen zu stellen". This informative new book is the first biography of David J. Brewer, an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1889 to 1910 and certainly one of the most visible judges of his time. Michael J. Brodhead's candid account covers Brewer's entire judicial career as well as his childhood, education, personal life, and many and varied public activities. Prior to rising to the nation's highest tribunal, Brewer served as a county probate judge, a state district judge, a Kansas State Supreme Court justice, and a federal circuit court judge. He was known not only for his long tenure on the Supreme Court but also for his numerous off-the-bench statements as an orator and writer.

During the federal election campaign of 1930 an eleven-year-old boy attended a campaign meeting in his native Prince Edward Island. The meeting was fascinating; the boy was booked. In the six decades since, politics has been a ruling passion in the life of Health Macquarrie. In this memoir he looks back on his years with the Progressive Conservative party, as an organizer, Member of Parliament, and senator. He first ran for office in 1956 leaving behind a career as a professor of political science. He ran (and won) eight times in the PEI constituency of Queens, before being appointed to the Senate in 1979. All the Tory brass are here, from R.B. Bennett to Brian Mulroney. Macquarrie reflects on their respective strengths and foibles, and vividly recalls some of the fractious and factious days in the PC party. The foreign policies of Conservative governments are a recurring theme. Both his academic and parliamentary careers have reflected Macquarrie 's keen interest in international affairs. In 1892, the year the American writer Pearl S. Buck was born, the US Congress renewed the Chinese Exclusion Act, initially passed in 1882, for another ten years. It sought to prevent all laborers of Chinese ethnicity from entering or reentering the US, with breaches punishable by law. Three months after her birth, Buck moved with her missionary parents to China and spent most of her life until her early forties there. During the global Cold War, Buck, already a Nobel Laureate (1938), sharply criticized US foreign policy and its racism, the ignorance of American diplomats about China, and the arrogant belief in solving conflicts in Asia through military means in her book Friend to Friend (1958). While there is little doubt about Buck's official US nationality, her cultural belonging of choice - which decisively shaped her lifelong literary writing, in particular the novel The Good Earth (1931) that earned her the Nobel Prize - is inherently multivalent. In The Good Earth, Buck depicts the lives of Chinese peasants and their loyalty to the earth that nurtures humanity and provides all that lives on it with nutrition. In the following pages, I will discuss Buck's bicultural biography and several aspects of this extremely popular and influential novel and, rather than viewing it as a piece of classic American literature, I will propose re-reading it as a work in the Chinese tradition of literary realism and in the context of the emerging trend of rural realism in the early twentieth century. The purpose of my re-reading of The Good Earth is to highlight less apparent global connections in the tradition of rural nostalgia and to complicate the paradigm of national literature and national history. Indeed, the earth, ruralism, nutrition, and food, as the novel describes, constitute the very foundation of human existence across borders, political camps, language barriers, and cultural differences from antiquity to the present day.

The article examines the features of memoir narration in the memoirs of Boris Egorov, distinguished by both a special interest in personal history, inscribed in the general historical course, and the need to return again in memory to previously visited significant places. A passionate love of memories is combined in the author's biography, marked by an unquenchable thirst for wandering, with a fondness for travel. Memories become a journey through the places of personal memory and appear as a journey into the depths of personal history. As a historian of Russian culture, one who professionally deals with the past and interprets the events of the image/svg+xml past, the author of the memoirs clearly understands that these events will certainly leave a mark, if not in documents, then in the human soul, so that the past continues to live in the present and to influence it. Memories of Boris Egorov are a way not only of reproducing, but also transforming pictures of the past, highlighted in the memory of the memoirist: the uniqueness of personality and the uniqueness of private biography allow us to see and comprehend everything that happened in the life of society and individuals in a new way.

Bibikov's personality is known to the public mostly as one of the governor-general of Kyiv, Volyn and Podillia. In the paper, the researchers have also mentioned his military exploits and work at leading positions. However, the details and specifics of family relationship, closely intertwined with the events in the country, remain hidden behind the curtain of the history. The Bibikov family generations' participation in the military-political confrontations in the Caucasus is one of such occurrences that became known thanks to the research into their epistolary heritage

Urban history is a rapidly expanding, flourishing field in Europe. Nevertheless, urban scholars would do well to re-examine the paradigms within which they have been working as the field today lacks central questions and general interpretive models. Moreover, the common focus on urban biography or upon one region within a single nation-state has become increasingly outmoded, given the international scale of economic processes and migration flows. More attention to topics treated within a European-wide or even international context is needed. In addition, urban history as currently defined is tilted towards social and economic concerns to the neglect of the political arena.
