Immigration poses individual or collective economic risks that might increase citizen support for government redistribution, but it can also generate fiscal pressure or undermine social solidarity to diminish such support. These offsetting conditions obscure the net effects of immigration for welfare states. This article explores whether immigration's effects are mediated by the economic and social integration of immigrants. Integration can be conceptualized and measured as involving the degree to which immigrants suffer unemployment rates, depend on welfare-state benefits, and harbor social attitudes similarly to the native population. Such integration may alter how immigration reduces solidarity and imposes fiscal and macroeconomic pressures, but does not much alter how immigration spurs economic risks for natives. Where migrants are more integrated by such measures, immigration should have less negative or more positive implications for native support for government redistribution and welfare states than where migrants are less integrated. The article explores these arguments using survey data for twenty-two European countries between 2002 and 2010. The principal finding is that economic integration, more than sociocultural integration, softens the tendency of immigration to undermine support for redistributive policies.

Immigration law fails to align with the contemporary understanding of substance addiction as a medical condition. The Immigration and Nationality Act regards noncitizens who suffer from drug or alcohol substance use disorder as immoral and undesirable. Addiction is a ground of exclusion and deportation and can prevent the finding of "good moral character" needed for certain immigration applications. Substance use disorder can lead to criminal behavior that lands noncitizens, including lawful permanent residents, in removal proceedings with no defense. The time has come for immigration law to catch up to today's understanding of addiction. The damage done by failing to contemporize the law extends beyond the harms of unwarranted family separation due to the deportation or exclusion of people who suffer from substance use disorder. Holding noncitizens to an archaic standard threatens our civic and political identity as a diverse and democratic country. The bigger the gap between contemporary mores and immigration law and policy, the harder it is for U.S. citizens to develop a civic and political identity that is free of ethnic and racial animus. Double standards for citizens and noncitizens create cognitive dissonance, leaving society vulnerable to discriminatory or stereotypical views to justify the differential treatment. This phenomenon not only harms noncitizens but thwarts the formation of a national civic and political identity free of ethnic and racial bias. This Article proposes and explains the legislative reforms necessary to remedy the current state of immigration law's treatment of people with substance use disorders.

This provides a brief introduction to the articles and commentary that constitute the ASAP collection on "The Social Psychology of Contemporary Immigration Policy." The collection includes four themes: challenges for law enforcement, group relations and social justice, effects of policy on individuals and communities, and media effects.

The Immigration and Settlement Workshop provided an opportunity for decision makers, practitioners and academic researchers to discuss the current state of knowledge about immigration issues and to identify key research questions relevant to immigration in Newfoundland and Labrador. It provided the opportunity for discussions on various topics including: current trends in attracting, integrating and retaining immigrants; the knowledge gaps experienced by Provincial, Federal and non-governmental stakeholders; and opportunities for collaboration between governments, non-governmental organizations, immigrants and university researchers.

Hermann Stresau arbeitet als Bibliothekar in Berlin, als 1933 die Machtergreifung durch die Nationalsozialisten erfolgt. In seinen Tagebüchern, die der in Amerika geborene Intellektuelle mit der Machtergreifung wieder aufnimmt, entfaltet sich ein intimes Bild der Vorkriegszeit. Ausnehmend klarsichtig schildert er, wie die neuen Machthaber mit der ihnen eigenen Mischung aus geschickt eingesetzter Propaganda, inszenierten Machtdemonstrationen, der skrupellosen Ausübung von Gewalt und einer gut organisierten Bürokratie die Herrschaft absicherten und Stück für Stück ausweiteten. Doch genauso sehr interessiert sich Stresau für sein Umfeld. Reflektiert beschreibt er das Verhalten derjenigen, die sich aus Überzeugung oder Karrieregründen dem System andienen, schildert das Mitläufertum ebenso wie die Gedanken der ihm Gleichgesinnten, die sich den neuen Verhältnissen verweigern. So entsteht ein unvergleichliches Zeitpanorama und Psychogramm der Deutschen. Die Tagebücher wurden von den Herausgebern Peter Graf und Ulrich Faure wiederentdeckt und reichen von 1933-1945. "Wer auch immer einen Blick auf die Biografien wirft, in denen sich die Zeit des Nationalsozialismus spiegelt, der hat mit Symptomen zu tun, in denen die Dinge kulminieren.
