The topic of the Holocaust is a relatively new issue in Lithuanian historical education – only with the regained independence from the Soviet Union in 1990 did Lithuanians have a chance include the Holocaust theme into the main school curriculum. Of course, its development through the first two decades have not been steady and even – in the beginning of the creation of the new educational system the Holocaust did not receive so much attention as in later years with the relation to integration with the European Union (2004) and development of historical studies on the Holocaust within the Lithuanian academic community. This article aims to analyse the representation of the Holocaust in Lithuanian educational system during the first two decades after Lithuania regained its independence. So the main basis of empirical data will be all history textbooks for Lithuanian school education (from the 5th grade to the last, 12th grade) published in the period of 1992-2012, and educational programmes presented by the State`s Ministry of Education and Science. In order to objectively evaluate the Lithuanian situation regarding Holocaust education the article will discuss and compare the main trends of Holocaust education development in neighbouring countries, which also suffered from Holocaust and could not freely speak about the issue during the Communist regime.

Beyond influencing generations of scholarship in American history, the paradigm of Frederick Jackson Turner has stimulated a series of monographs and articles on the role of the frontier in the formation of other societies. A synthesis of this comparative research on these frontier societies has been ably undertaken by Gerhard and Mikesell. While there have been numerous articles in both English and Portuguese on the Brazilian frontier, these largely descriptive studies have not been systematically integrated into any conceptual framework, much less the comparative tradition inspired by the Turner thesis. In this essay, I propose to test the robustness of the frontier paradigm against some Brazilian frontier experiences

Technical and Vocational Education (TVE) is a chequered aspect of education in contemporary Africa. This paper examines the complicated realities of TVE in Nigeria. In practice, indigenous education systems embedded a standard learning procedure which British colonial administration keyed into and standardised in non-formal arrangements through government departments. Therefore, the paper tracks the (dis)oriented education-industry relationship that existed after 1960. TVE in Nigerian societies has rarely improved to revolve modern technology attuned to global development and still grapple with inadequate technical applications which implies an educational gap. It unravels the governmental and non-governmental interventions. Recently, entrepreneurs and industrialists in Nigeria identified technical education as a panacea by planning to fill the learning gap through the establishment of technical universities that reflect modernisation. Accumulation and circulation of skills in TVE learning feature a process of continuity and change which explains how old and new learning systems reflect. The methodology adopted is historical and it is intertwined with the context of education systems, politics and economy.

Economics as a scholarly discipline was transformed in Latin America during the 1960s and 1970s, when many countries in the region received financial and academic support from US institutions ostensibly aimed at "modernizing" the standards of training and research in the field. Even though Chile remains the most well-known case, similar developments took place in Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, and elsewhere. In Brazil, the restructuring of economics derived much of its strength from a cooperation agreement signed between Vanderbilt University and the University of São Paulo, financially backed by USAID and the Ford Foundation. This article recovers the early postwar origins of this partnership, the process through which it was implemented during the 1960s, and its influence in reshaping Brazilian scholarly standards. Just as the University of Chicago left a lasting mark on Chilean economics, Vanderbilt also became a pervasive point of reference for the future development of the discipline in Brazil. Different actors, institutions, and contexts, however, ultimately produced quite distinct results in each case.

Conventional wisdom usually underestimates the important role of public research institutes and universities in successful cases of Brazilian economy. History of science and technology institutions shows a long-term process of formation of these institutions and their interactions with industrial firms, agricultural producers or society. This paper investigates historical roots of successful cases of Brazil. First, we present the late onset of National Innovation System (NSI) institutions and waves of institutional formation in Brazil. Second, we describe the history of three selected successful cases, which spans from a low-tech sector (agriculture), a medium-tech sector (steel and special metal alloys), to a high-tech sector (aircraft). Abstract The beginnings of systematic ethnography in Brazil can be attributed to the German physician and psychiatrist Karl von den Steinen, who in 1884 led the first expedition to the Amazonian River Xingu. The ethnographies Durch Central-Brasilien (1886) and its sequel Unter den Naturvölkern Zentral-Brasiliens (1894), about the expedition from 1887 to 1888, made him the world's leading expert on Brazilian indigenous peoples. This article seeks to explore von den Steinen's expeditions and their results within a specific political and cultural context. On the one hand, his theoretical approach was related to German ethnology and anthropology. On the other, the expeditions took place in the context of the indigenous policy of the Brazilian Empire. The Brazilian government provided material aid and military staff, because it had interests in the researches, although these interests at times were conflictive. This article's objective is to contribute to a historical analysis of the political conditions of ethnography.

This study analyzes the relationship between psychiatric care and Brazilian political history at different points in time: in the second half of the nineteenth century, when the creation of the first asylum served as an affirmation of Imperial power; at the beginning of the twentieth century, when the introduction of psychiatry was part of the new Brazilian Republic's pledge to become a «civilized » nation; in the 1940s, when a centralized Brazilian State boosted the expansion of psychiatric care; and as of the 1970s, in which case the Brazilian psychiatric reform has run parallel to political redemocratization. ; Este trabajo analiza las relaciones entre la asistencia psiquiátrica y la historia política brasileña durante diferentes momentos: la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, cuando la creación del primer manicomio sirvió como afirmación del poder imperial; el inicio del siglo XX, cuando la configuración de la psiquiatría ayudaba a la joven República a recorrer el camino hacia una nación civilizada; los años 40, en los que un Estado centralizador dio un fuerte impulso a la asistencia psiquiátrica; y desde finales de los años 70, cuando los avances en la psiquiatría brasileña vinieron de la mano de la redemocratización política.

William Shakespeare (1565-1616) is a noteworthy presence in works by James Joyce (1882-1941). Joyce's Ulysses contains a number of passages that allude to the bard's plays. Unlike the Homeric parallel, the Shakespearean references are scattered through the novel in form of allusions and echoes. In view of this, Laura Pelaschiar (2016) points out that "the job of the Joyce/Shakespeare explorer is a trying one because Shakespeare's presence in Joyce is hard to unearth and assess" (58). The spectre of Hamlet arises in the novel in multiple ways and evokes crucial themes of the novel, such as the paternity matter and the relation between art and biographical life. In virtue of such intertextuality, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the presence of Hamlet in the Brazilian translations of James Joyce's Ulysses by Antônio Houaiss (Civilização Brasileira, 1966), Bernardina da Silveira Pinheiro (Objetiva, 2005) and Caetano Galindo (Penguin/Companhia das Letras, 2012). This study comprises larger research that investigates how translators dealt with the Hamletian references in Joyce's novel.
