"Die vielfältigen Probleme und Konflikte, die in modernen Einwanderungsgesellschaften existieren, sind komplexer Natur. Sie betreffen zum einen strukturelle Dimensionen, z. B. den rechtlichen Status, die soziale Lage oder die gesellschaftspolitische Partizipation der Immigranten. Zusätzlich gibt es Sachverhalte, die eher soziokulturellen Charakter haben. Dazu gehören neben den Sprachen auch diejenigen Bereiche, die sich auf Fragen der Religionen beziehen oder diesen zugerechnet werden. Diese Thematik hat in den vergangenen Jahren an Relevanz und Aufmerksamkeit gewonnen. Beeinflusst ist dies zunächst dadurch, dass die religiöse Heterogenität im Zusammenhang mit Prozessen der Einwanderung nach Europa zugenommen hat. Zudem gibt es eine Vielzahl von Konflikten, die mit religiösen Fragen direkt oder indirekt zu tun haben. Dazu gehören zum einen eher alltägliche Konflikte, die sich innerhalb existierender Regeln und institutioneller Rahmenbedingungen abspielen. Zum anderen gibt es aber auch extreme Konflikte, bei denen es um die normativen Grundlagen des gesellschaftlichen Zusammenlebens und des politischen Gemeinwesens selbst geht. Beeinflusst sind diese nicht zuletzt durch (Kultur-)Rassismus, Rechtspopulismus, Diskriminierung, Islamophobie und Antisemitismus einerseits und Fundamentalismus und Islamismus (zuletzt in Form der im Januar 2015 ausgeübten terroristischen Anschläge in Paris) andererseits. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden in dem Beitrag Religionen als Akteure betrachtet, die über Freiheitsrechte verfügen, von denen unterschiedliche gesellschaftliche Funktionen und Wirkungen ausgehen können und die Anforderungen der Menschenrechte und der Demokratie gerecht werden sollten." This collection examines the intersections of religion and "new" materialisms. Calling upon an interdisciplinary throng of scholars in science studies, religious studies, and theology, it assembles a multiplicity of experimental perspectives on materiality: what is matter, how does it materialize, and what sort of worlds are enacted in its varied entanglements with divinity?

This article focuses on stratification beliefs and racial policy opinions among white and black Americans who differ in religious preference. First, it summarizes earlier research on white conservative Protestants and outlines characterizations of Black Protestant church congregants. It then reports patterns of stratification beliefs and racial policy opinions among blacks and whites varying in religious preference who responded to the 1996 through 2006 General Social Surveys. Comparisons across twelve race-by-religion categories did not provide persuasive evidence that white conservative Protestants are uniquely conservative in their stratification beliefs, once background characteristics are controlled, nor was the Black Protestant group distinctive. Compared to blacks, whites were less inclined to structuralist explanations of racial inequality, slightly more inclined to individualist explanations, and consistently more negative about policies and programs to aid blacks. What is more, white Christians were more racially conservative in all these ways than non-Christian whites.

AbstractDespite its considerable intellectual interest and great social relevance, religion has been neglected by contemporary developmental psychologists. But in the last few years, there has been an emerging body of research exploring children's grasp of certain universal religious ideas. Some recent findings suggest that two foundational aspects of religious belief – belief in mind–body dualism, and belief in divine agents – come naturally to young children. This research is briefly reviewed, and some future directions are discussed.

In contemporary Western world religion has long lost its status of a default legitimating formula and has been relegated, in liberal political philosophy, to the private sphere. Institutionally, religious organizations have been largely separated from government institutions. Despite these adverse circumstances, religion – both as a system of ideas, values and norms and in its institutional expression – has adopted effective survival strategies guarding it from social and political marginalization. Religion has been accorded special status among other ideologies. In science, it results in a sort of methodological agnosticism, which treats religious and scientific statements as belonging to two incommensurable spheres. In politics, religious organizations are often granted special legal status among other political actors and religious freedom has been constitutionalized as a special case of general freedom of expression. As judicature and political practice show, religious arguments can often trump non-religious claims when fundamental value conflicts arise. In their political activity, religious organizations have used strategies characteristic for other political actors (lobbying, mass mobilization etc.), thereby gaining democratic legitimacy, as well as unique, religion-specific strategies. Armed with these and other empowering tools, religion can continue to influence democratic political systems in significant ways. ; Utraciwszy status dominującej formuły legitymizacyjnej w świecie zachodnim, religia została też instytucjonalnie oddzielona od państwa i, w myśl ideologii liberalnej, zepchnięta na margines życia publicznego. Pomimo tych niesprzyjających okoliczności, religia – zarówno jako system idei i norm, jak i w wymiarze instytucjonalnym – zdołała obronić się przed marginalizacją, zapewniając sobie szczególny status wśród innych ideologii. W nauce objawia się to swego rodzaju metodologicznym agnostycyzmem, nakazującym traktować twierdzenia religijne jako niewspółmierne z naukowymi, a zatem niepodlegające krytyce. W polityce, organizacje religijne uzyskały w wielu państwach zachodnich szczególną pozycję, a wolność religijna została ukonstytuowana jako szczególny przypadek swobody wypowiedzi. W swej działalności politycznej organizacje religijne stosują zarówno metody identyczne z innymi aktorami politycznymi (lobbying, masowa mobilizacja itp.) – co nadaje im legitymację w ramach demokratycznych systemów politycznych – jak i specyficzne strategie religijne. Działania te są w artykule analizowane głównie na przykładach polskich i amerykańskich. Uzbrojone w takie narzędzia, religijne podmioty polityczne mogą wywierać znaczący wpływ na demokratyczne systemy polityczne.
