AbstractHybrid masculinity refers to men's selective incorporation of performances and identity elements associated with marginalized and subordinated masculinities and femininities. We use recent theorization of hybrid masculinities to critically review theory and research that seeks to make sense of contemporary transformations in masculinity. We suggest that research broadly supports three distinct consequences associated with recent changes in performances and politics of masculinity that work to obscure the tenacity of gendered inequality. Hybrid masculinities (i) symbolically distance men from hegemonic masculinity; (ii) situate the masculinities available to young, White, heterosexual men as somehow less meaningful than the masculinities associated with various marginalized and subordinated Others; and (iii) fortify existing social and symbolic boundaries in ways that often work to conceal systems of power and inequality in historically new ways.

The French Conseil constitutionnel was by no means a likely candidate to refer a case to the Court of Justice under Article 267 TFEU. Such a bold move was highly unexpected in view of its limited jurisdiction, its usual emphasis on the supremacy of the French Constitution, and its constitutional identity narrative. Yet, the hardly thinkable became true in April 2013 in connection with the implementation of the European Arrest Warrant. In response to a cooperative Conseil, the ECJ displayed its willingness to accommodate the requirements deriving from domestic constitutional law. In doing so, it offered a positive illustration of Melloni and Akerberg Fransson by promoting the application of national standards of protection of human rights in cases falling within the scope of application of EU Law, yet not entirely determined by it.

This article addresses the problem of stubbornly low levels of diversity in the communications industries, using the case of public relations to illustrate the points made. The author explores how disciplinary discourses of occupational practice and identity combine with representations of normative embodiment to construct and communicate a system of informal credentialism in the field that marginalises certain identities. Through a critical discourse analysis of formal texts that circulate across the industry, the author illustrates how apparently value-neutral presentations of PR work and workers exclude BME and working-class practitioners who cannot easily demonstrate a natural 'fit' with client, consultancy or colleague. The findings illustrate how the construction of informal credentialism through discourse may be acting as a powerful source of closure across the communications industries.

This study is situated within a self-study research methods course to scaffold doctoral students' explorations of the intersections of their culture, and research interests using arts as a tool. Embracing the arts as a research method, the first author painted a self-portrait using the vibrant colors of Madhubani art which holds cultural significance to her. She utilized Blumer's (1986) and Mead's (1934) theory of symbolic interactionism to explain the process of her self-development as a researcher. Combining her self-portrait with an earlier research study proved valuable as a conduit for understanding and interpreting her work as a research methodologist. This study is valuable to others interested in studying their practice and research identity through an arts-based research method.

The aim of this paper is twofold. Firstly, it aims to understand if the territory of the European Union (EU) contains any form of identity, with particular effects on tourism. Secondly, to identify how EU citizens interpret the Union in a special way when they choose their international tourist destinations. The key issue is to understand the behaviour of EU nationals as a new form of 'domestic' tourism in the European Union in order to know what factors determine the choice of an international tourism destination in Europe by European citizens and what attributes make a European tourist destination more attractive than other. That is why authors conducted a direct survey on EU residents. A descriptive and a factorial analysis have been applied to more than 600 replies received from 26 States.

Scholars have debated whether citizenship regimes in Western democracies aretracking a liberal universalistic path or continue to follow distinctive nationaltraditions. This essay argues that the Australian case does both through a distinctiveliberal nationalist architecture. Increasingly since the 1970s, Australian citizenshipacquisition and status have largely followed a civic nationalist or liberal universalistformulation. However, this has been executed within a broader liberal nationalistapproach to national identity and culture that accommodates these aspects of nationallife. The essay discusses the idea of liberal nationalism as a political architecture ofdifferentiated domains, Australia's construction of this architecture, and howAustralia's two recent citizenship tests illustrate this framework in action. It concludeswith some thoughts on the symbolic significance of citizenship tests for liberallegitimacy and the future of the liberal nationalist project.

Abstract. The article deals with the notion of suggestion as one of the main features of modern political discourse, the processes of deletion, generalization and distortion of information, that cause non-identity between the deep informational content of the utterance and it's represented version and therefore are used to influence the addressee, are described; language means used to realize the process of generalization are defined and analyzed, namely: universal quantifiers, including some adverbs and pronouns; modal operators of obligation / possibility, such as modal verbs with the meaning of obligation / possibility, and other parts of speech (adjectives, adverbs, particles), semantics of which presupposes necessity or obligation of some actions; intensifiers, which modify the pragmatic meaning of the utterance and therefore intensify the impact on the addressee.

История тесно переплетается с национализмом. Националистические интеллектуалы стремятся формировать и предлагать обществу исторические нарративы в националистической системе координат. Она содействует размыванию канонов исторического исследования и политизации историографии. ; The article focuses on the thesis that development of national identity and memory is determined by the history that becomes especially relevant in transitive societies. The history is closely intertwined with nationalism. The nationalist intellectuals aspire to interpret historical narratives in the nationalist terms. These activities of the nationalists lead to various consequences. It contributes to diffusion of standards of historical researches and encourages the politicization of the historiography.

In this paper we are going to see how ancient goddesses became very popular with many female artists, musicians and writers. Some made use of the goddess to express their own personal emotions, others to express a link with the past, so to entrench a national identity with the prehistoric ancestors, while others used the symbol of the goddess as a significant political ramification for the feminist movement. I am not going to get into a detailed and at times controversial debate of how strong the symbol of the Mother Goddess became for feminists. My interest lies precisely on how certain female artists interpreted the use of the symbol of the Mother Goddess in their work and how it is linked with a primitivistic attitude. ; peer-reviewed

Understanding Chinese nationalism and national identity is of primary importance in comprehending the increasingly assertive role that a rising China plays on the global political scene. But "Chinese nationalism" is a very difficult concept to deal with due to differences in the Western and Chinese understandings of the term. This article attempts to bridge the gap by analyzing both Chinese and Western conceptualizations of the term and discussing the difference between patriotism and nationalism and their interchange in China today. The importance of nationalism/patriotism in shaping modern Chinese society is also recognized by the Chinese state, that deliberately fosters patriotic sentiment among the young generation through the Patriotic Education Campaign. Material from this campaign is used to provide an important indication of the patriotic content of current Chinese state nationalism.

Main factors affecting the social transformation process in UkraineThe aim of the study is to show the main socially determined reasons for the hitherto failure of the transformation process in Ukraine. Social factors of failures have been divided into external and internal ones. The main external one lies in the imperialist politics of the Russian Federation exploiting the existence of the "homo sovieticus'' and a large Russian-speaking minority in Ukraine. Internal factors are divided into the ones related to identity problems of Ukrainian citizens (ethnic diversity and, again, "homo sovieticus") and those resulting from the weakness of political elites, which, for almost the past quarter of a century have not been able to lead to the creation of even the initial phase of a civil society in Ukraine. ; Tomasz Wiskulski

In dominant imaginations, French Guiana traditionally fills a position at the extreme margin. From the subaltern perspective from within, complex superpositions of historical, political, and economic as well as ethnic-cultural spaces can be recognized. Postcolonial concepts developed in francophone Caribbean literature are not fully sufficient to describe the highly dynamic migration space in close neighbourhood to economic giant Brazil, whose continentality results in fundamental differences from the islands. With the appropriation of orality and the inclusion of the history of migrants, present Guianan literature is trying to imagine an emancipated Guianan identity, which includes the transcultural spaces and their actors beyond projected borders. Therefore, French Guiana can be considered a paradigmatic laboratory for the negotiation of identifications and representations of fragmented spaces in the sense of postmodern reformulations

The Greek traditional dwellings of the Cyclades epitomize sustainable design principles to create optimum comfort environment. This paper evaluates specific traditional dwelling type in terms of its response to climate and thermal comfort based on passive design principles that could be adapted to current architectural practice in the area, in order to optimize the relationship between site, building and climate. This study especially deals with building envelope (walls and roofs: construction materials, type of insulation), that demonstrate sustainable design principles. The paper discusses relevance of the study in the context of the integrated energy and climate change policy of the European Union. Finally, the study is important from the point of socio-cultural identity and regional character of the Cyclades, which are under preservation status as per law.
