This invited article takes the opportunity occasioned by the approach of the millennium to look both backward and forward at the ills and the achievements of social work as a profession, at the changing political context in which we work, and at the successes and failures brought about by attempts to put the question of the worth of what we do beyond ideology through empirical research—in particular, through controlled experiments.
Military social workers in South Africa have developed distinctive ways of thinking about military social work. These developments have been influenced by various contextual factors, such as the transition of South Africa to a non-racial democracy in 1994 and the establishment of a military social work research capacity. These factors contributed to new ways of thinking, such as the recognition that military social work has a mandate to facilitate organizational change and the adoption of a resilience perspective. A central development in military social work thinking in South Africa was the formulation of a Military Social Work Practice Model, which is described and illustrated in some detail. This model emphasizes binocular vision (focusing on the interface between soldiers and the military organization) and four practice positions, derived from occupational social work theory. The author notes the importance of creating appropriate contexts that facilitate further developments in military social work theory.
"Fusing the academic with the applied, this book provides a comprehensive introduction to social media for future communications professionals. While most social media texts approach the subject through either a theoretical, scholarly lens or a professional, practical lens, this text offers a much-needed linkage of theory to the practical tactics employed by social media communicators. Concise and conversational chapters break down the basics of both social media theory and practice and are complimented by sidebars written by scholars and industry professionals, chapter summaries, and end-of-chapter exercises. This book is ideal for introductory social media courses in communication, public relations, and mass communication departments as well as courses in digital media and public relations. Online resources include social media writing templates, sample posts, and content calendar templates. Please visit www.routledge.com/9781032185873"--
Organisation of large scale or mega cultural events requires not only skilful managerial techniques, but also an integrated evaluation approach taking into account such aspects as the cultural, economic, social, political, and environmental context. Mega cultural events can be characterised by complex objectives, diverse funding sources (EU, public, private), a multilayer structure of planned results and effects. All that obviously encumbers evaluation of mega events. The initiative of the European Capital of Culture is one of major large scale European cultural cooperation projects, taking into consideration its budget and the diversity of its programme that exceeds the scope of any other cultural event. In 2014, Riga was chosen to be one of the European Capitals of Culture. Latvia had recently overcome an economic recession; in this context substantial public investment in culture required an additional focus on evaluating the economic impact of Riga 2014 programme. Research is based on the assumption that social network analysis has a great potential in evaluation of cultural impact, as culture incorporates the very idea of a network through which new ideas and creativity are channelled.
The relevance of John Rawls' thought in the political philosophy of our time is due, among other reasons, to the fact that it includes the two types of justifications currently in vogue in any constitutional democratic regime. The evolution of his contractual theory represents exemplarily the two possible uses of the social contract as political legitimation. Our first intention in this paper is to underline the contrast between both uses, and then analyse the difficulties entailed by the merely "political" use of the contract method that Rawls defends in his latest works.
The paper aims to examine how social entrepreneurship education (SEE) is implemented at Croatian universities. The research was conducted through in-depth interviews with five professors who teach the Social Entrepreneurship course or a related one that covers this topic. The undertaken research identified the dominant themes within the content of the analysed courses, the teaching techniques used, and the target competencies of SEE. The comparison of the results with SEE in other countries resulted in three opportunities for the development of the analysed courses: (1) emphasizing the importance of social enterprise scaling and local adaptation of existing social innovations; (2) greater use of service learning; (3) more significant focus on sales skills and financial management with an emphasis on new sources of financing aimed at social enterprises. The results will help policy creators support the recommended improvements of the SEE at Croatian universities. Key words: social entrepreneurship education; syllabus; teaching methods; competencies
Despite the popularity of social movement participation as a form of political action in the US, with impressive demonstrations of widespread support, such movements are often unable to effect desired policy changes. A resolution to this problem is sought by distinguishing between three approaches that movements can take: demanding policy changes, achieving participation in the policy process, & transforming social values. The second is argued to be the most effective, since public officials are more likely to accept offers of cooperative participation than demands for policy change, & transforming public values requires considerable time, if it is possible at all. The nuclear freeze movement is considered as a case in point to demonstrate the futility of demanding policy change, & the movement to control hazardous waste, to illustrate the efficacy of participation for influencing policy decisions. The purpose of this descriptive case study was to examine the contextual and cultural influences on interest development in science for 24 Canadian South Asian young adults. Within this study, aspects pertaining to socialization with respect to self-efficacy and outcome expectations of engaging in the sciences, are consistent with existing formulations on South Asian families. Additionally, the study provides information as to the relationship between South Asian young adults' cultural identification to contend with decision-making and perceptions of efficacy (individual and collective efficacy). Finally, this study broadens our understanding of how South Asians develop an interest in the sciences and the support of parents and siblings in helping participants prepare for their future. Implications for counselling practice and future research are discussed.
