This article locates six themes in the overlap between the sociology of culture and the sociology of sexuality, highlighting both institutionalized and discursive forms of power. These themes include (1) works that develop or problematize economic metaphors in the study of sexuality; (2) studies of commercial sex that problematize cultural assumptions about sex, money, and morality; (3) explorations of "nonsexual"-seeming institutions, which can reproduce or challenge hierarchies of race and gender as they transmit sexual norms; (4) considerations of the sexual underpinnings of citizenship and personhood; (5) analyses of mass-mediated discourses of sexual personhood; and (6) critiques of sociology itself, as reproducing discursive power by neglecting to problematize certain assumptions about sexuality. The article ends by considering sociology's relationship to humanities-based queer theory, arguing that sociologists should bring analyses of emotions and feelings rules into our considerations of how people develop a sense of self through social interactions.

Résumé : Avec une culture politique libérale qui se caractérise par un gouvernement limité, l'internationalisme et une société ouverte, le Canada se situe quelque part entre la France et les Etats-Unis dans son degré de protectionnisme culturel et d'intensité globale de la politique culturelle. Les Etats-Unis peuvent se permettre d'avoir une «politique culturelle des portes ouvertes» parce qu'ils ont peu à craindre de la concurrence étrangère. Pour le Canada, cependant, la culture de libre-échange fait surgir le spectre de l'incapacité de se protéger contre les forces de l'annexion culturelle américaine. Cet article enquête le débat sur l'impérialisme culturel américain et les préoccupations du Canada pour sa souveraineté culturelle avec une référence particulière aux accords de commerce international de la dernière décennie. Mots-clés : impérialisme, hégémonie, colonialité, relations asymétriques Abstract: With a liberal political culture that is characterized by limited government, internationalism and an open society, Canada stands somewhere between France and the United States in its degree of cultural protectionism and overall intensity of cultural politics. The United States, of course, is the great cultural exception with a regnant popular culture that is able to indemnify its production costs over a populous and prosperous society which is largely immune to cultural expressions that do not project an American sensibility. In effect, the United States can afford to have a "cultural open-door policy" because it has little to fear from foreign competition. For Canada, however, cultural free-trade raises the specter of standing unprotected against the forces of American cultural annexation. This discussion will survey the debate over U.S. cultural imperialism and Canadian concerns for its cultural sovereignty with particular reference to the international trade agreements of the past decade. The volume highlights ongoing changes in the political economy of small cities in relation to the field of culture and leisure. Culture and leisure are focal points both to local entrepreneurship and to planning by city governments, which means that these developments are subject to market dynamics as well as to political discourse and action. Public-private partnerships as well as conflicts of interests characterise the field, and a major issue related to the strategic development of culture and leisure is the balance between market and welfare. This field is gaining importance in most cities today in planning, production and consumption, but to the extent that these changes have drawn academic attention it has focused on large, metropolitan areas and on creative clusters and flagship high culture projects. Smaller cities and their often substantively different cultural strategies have been largely ignored, thus leading to a huge gap in our knowledge on contemporary urban change. By bringing together a number of case studies as well as theoretical reflections on the cultural political economy of small cities, this volume contributes to an emerging small cities research agenda and to the development of policy-relevant expertise that is sensitive to place-specific cultural dynamics. In taking this approach, the volume hopes to contribute to emerging research on culture and leisure economies by developing a differentiated spatial dimension to it, without which sustainable urban strategies cannot be developed. This book integrates perspectives of economic development with questions of governance and equity in relation to the fields of culture and leisure planning and development. This book should be of interest to students and researchers of Urban Studies and Planning, Regional Studies and Economics, as well as Sociology and Geography.

Istanbul's fiercely fought municipal election is over. The opposition candidate, Ekrem İmamoğlu, won a landslide victory over his rival. The governing Justice and Develop­ment Party (AK Party) has arguably suffered its most severe defeat since coming to power in 2002. The repercussions and reverberations of this election will be deeply felt across the political spectrum in Turkey. This election will have a formative impact on this new period of Turkish politics. Turkey has gained new political actors, for exam­ple İmamoğlu, as a result of this election. The same election has also further opened the way for contestations on the conservative end of the political spectrum. Former President Abdullah Gül, former Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, and former Minis­ter of Economy Ali Babacan are set to break away from the AK Party and form their own political movements. This essay examines three competing interpretations of the Founding Fathers that were made in the contested political climate of the 1980s. The first is Marc Plattner s neoclassical economic interpretation that stresses Madisonian principles of law, property rights, and the danger of majoritarian rule to justify a minimal rule-based government and free market capitalism. The second is Robert Bellah s communitariandemocratic interpretation, which appeals to the Founders and our republican traditions to critique excessive individualism and advance a more democratic politics governed by the norms of civic virtue. The third approach considered is the anti-Federalist critique of the Founders by Sheldon Wolin, who sees in the Constitution the beginnings of a system of national capitalism and state power that undermined localized and democratic political culture. Each approach will be assessed for its contribution toward a more participatory notion of public life.

"Debates over the headscarf and niqab, so-called 'shari'a tribunals', Female Genital Operations and forced marriages have raged in Europe and North America in recent years, raising the question -- does accommodating Islam violate women's rights? This book takes issue with the terms of this debate. It contrasts debates in France over the headscarf and in Canada over religious arbitration with the lived experience of a specific group of Muslim women: Somali refugee women. The challenges these women eloquently describe firsthand demonstrate that the fray over accommodating culture and religion neglects other needs and engenders a democratic deficit. In Refugee Women: Beyond Gender Versus Culture, new theoretical perspectives recast both the story told and who tells the tale. By focusing on the politics underlying how these debates are framed and the experiences of women at the heart of the controversies, women are considered first and foremost as democratic agents rather than actors in the 'culture versus gender' script. Crucially, the institutions and processes created to address women's needs are critically assessed from this perspective. Breaking from scholarship that focuses on whether the accommodation of culture and religion harms women, Bassel argues that this debate ignores the realities of the women at its heart. In these debates, Muslim women are constructed as silent victims. Bassel pleads compellingly for a consideration of women in all their complexity, as active participants in democratic life. Representing democracy and the development of the political persona in the XIXth century Romanian political discourse means, first of all, to focus the analysis on the implications the concept of democracy could provide. In the first half of the XIXth century, the concept of Romanian democracy and its place within political discourse are conditioned by philosophical and historiographical discontinuities between the periods, the intellectual sources, as well as the political and institutional framework of that time. Within that context, democracy should be regarded as a fundamental concept to political and institutional development in the beginning of the XIXth century. The present article goes on this path, analyzing some examples of political discourse during the period of establishment of the fundamental democratic institutions in the Romanian modernity.

Este artículo se centra en el papel de la universidad y el movimiento estudiantil antifranquista en la lucha por la democracia en España desde los años 60, enmarcados en la dinámica cultural (generación beat) y política internacional (Tercera Ola). Se reflexiona en torno el papel de la juventud universitaria, los partidos políticos de oposición, el proyecto democratizador universitario y por extensión del país, etc., para cerrar con una explicación de las causas de la desmovilización tras 1977. Las fuentes empleadas son hemerográficas, bibliográficas, orales y de archivo. ; This article focuses on the role of the university and the student movement against Franco in the fight for democracy in Spain since the 60s, framed in cultural dynamic (Beat Generation) and international politics (Third Wave). It analyzes the role of the university youth, the opposition political parties, the process of democratizing university and – by extension – the country, concluding with an explanation of the causes of demobilization after 1977. The article utilizes newspapers, as well as bibliographical, oral and archival sources.
