Dealing with diversity: Sri Lankan discourses on peace and conflict
What is the conflict in Sri Lanka? An ethnic problem? A historical threat to Buddhism? A liberation struggle? Or the unfortunate outcome of political mismanagement? Sri Lanka's conflict has been subjected to many different interpreations. the views of Colombo and Kandy based authors are relatively well known. But what about the views from the deep South, the East and the North of the country? This volume bundles contributions from all these regions. The authors place the conflict against a different backdrop. Some are clearly political driven, others take more academic distance. Some go back to the stone age and put the conlict in historic perspective, others analyse contemporary politics and the humanitarian consequences of the war. The accounts often contradict each other, but this book does not aim to identify the 'right' perspective or the 'truth'. The fact is that multiple discourses exist and they need to be understood. An adequate understanding of the contents, language and framing of discourses offers a channel to deal with the conflict in an unconventional manner. If Sri Lanka is to come to terms with itself, it needs to appreciate the functioning of discourses and their potential to change. (The Netherlands Institute of International Relations 'Clingendael')
