As a comparatively young boy I became strongly interested in both historical and political issues. This had to do, of course, with German history and the Cold War of the 1950s. As a student, I concentrated on historical and social studies, majored in political science and turned, due to my interest in the voters of the extremist NPD, into an empiricist and voting behavior specialist. Using theories and methods of voting behavior research for the analysis of the NSDAP electorate, I very soon discovered that much of what we believed about Nazi voting was empirically unfounded or flawed. So, in order to create substantial knowledge on the subject, I worked for more than twelve years on the question of "Who voted for Hitler?" After that, and until now, I have been working on the NSDAP party membership, a work still in progress. These topics, however, comprise only a smaller part of my scientific work. A much bigger part deals with modern voting behavior, political attitudes, extremist voters, the methodology of the social sciences, etc. These latter aspects of my career as a scientist are not dealt with in depth in the following.

Reductionist discourses in various academic disciplines have tended to treat the Native authors of collaboratively written autobiographies as objects of Euro-American study rather than subjects of knowledge production. To develop a decolonial practice of reading as-told-to Indian autobiographies, this dissertation engages with scholarship in the fields of Native American Studies and Gender and Sexuality Studies to offer queer readings of the autobiographies of Helen Sekaquaptewa, Polingaysi Qoyawayma, and Don Talayesva, Hopi people who were born during the 1890s amid the federal Indian policy era of assimilation. This study focuses on the primary texts' narrations of discipline in Indian boarding schools and highlights Hopi perspectives on the role of gender and sexual normalization in the colonial assimilation project. Chapter One, "`I am talking. She is writing.': Autobiographical Indiscipline in Me and Mine: The Life Story of Helen Sekaquaptewa ," develops the term autobiographical indiscipline to name the mode of collaborative self-authorship that these Hopi authors employed to represent the continuation of their Hopi identities. Chapter two, "Remembering Polingaysi: A Queer Recovery of No Turning Back as a Decolonial Text," examines the gendered facets of the trope of living "between two worlds" and the imbrication of sexual, racial, and nationalist politics underlying Indian boarding schools' policing of students' genders. Chapter three, "Twins, Whips, Tricks, and Clowns: Sovereign Erotics in Sun Chief: The Autobiography of a Hopi Indian ," explores the history of sexuality in America and its inherent ties to race making in the context of state-sponsored ethnologic projects. Chapter four, "Decolonizing Voth's Archive: Re-narrating Ethnographic Photographs in Hopi and Settler Colonial Contexts," re-narrates images from the archive of Mennonite missionary H. R. Voth through the voices of Hopi autobiographical subjects. Despite its particular Hopi context, this dissertation belongs to a broader intellectual context regarding the delimitation of literary and national boundaries and the politics of canon formation, which forms the core of American Studies. My theory of autobiographical indiscipline has implications for a range of Indian autobiographies as well as other forms of literature that blur the definitions of the autobiographical genre, such as ex-slave narratives, autobiographical fiction, and fictional autobiography.

The purpose of the article is to consider the song-romance area of ​​pianism, according to the proposed classification of piano works by M. Glinka, through the prism of autobiographical character, as the semantic dominant of the composer's piano style. The methodology consists in the application of the method of cultural commentary developed in the works of S. Tishko, also in co-authorship with S. Mamaev and G. Kukol. The specified methodological approach is used as an analytical commentary on a musical text and is implemented using a combination of biographical information and meanings of the work in the context of evolutionary processes and constant features of the composer's style. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the consideration of the piano field of composer's creativity as a single text, directly and indirectly connected by numerous intersections both with the events of Glinka's creative biography and with romantic cultural meanings; in the formation of an idea of ​​the typology of the composer's piano works and the creation of an appropriate classification; in the study of the song-romance sphere of Glinka's piano style through the prism of autobiographical character and thus revealing a whole spectrum of romantic senses of his pianism that were not previously found in musicology. Conclusions. The comprehension of Glinka's piano heritage as a whole allows us to single out the sphere of song-romance lyrics of the composer's piano instrumentalism. An analytical commentary on a musical text, which is realized with the help of a combination of biographical information and the semantic-figurativeness of works in the context of evolutionary processes and constant features of the composer's style, makes it possible to reveal the ways of forming a hidden programmatic and its artistic meaning, as well as to reveal the composer's attraction to the use of words as a factor of meaning formation, to note the importance of autobiographical themes and romantic imagery.

Why does writing of the death penalty demand the first-person treatment that it also excludes? The article investigates the role played by the autobiographical subject in Derrida's The Death Penalty, Volume I, where the confessing 'I' doubly supplements the philosophical investigation into what Derrida sees as a trend toward the worldwide abolition of the death penalty: first, to bring out the harmonies or discrepancies between the individual subject's beliefs, anxieties, desires and interests with respect to the death penalty and the state's exercise of its sovereignty in applying it; and second, to provide a new definition of the subject as haunted, as one that has been, but is no longer, subject to the death penalty, in the light of the worldwide abolition currently underway.

This essay examines Washington Irving's short story "Rip Van Winkle" from an autobiographical perspective by focusing on the commonality and resemblance between the author and his fictional hero. It suggests that Rip and Irving have many similar traits which underline the deeply personal and subjective dimension of the tale. It begins by considering some of these traits such as idleness, generosity and kind-heartedness. It claims that both Rip and Irving are characterized by their benevolence and altruism which account for their belovedness. After discussing these attributes, the essay focuses on other common characteristics such as the tendency to pull away from matrimony. In this matter, both Irving and Rip's possible homosexuality are considered. Although there is no clear evidence that they are homosexuals, this essay suggests that they both seem to have a repulsive attitude towards heterosexuality. The essay then concludes by examining some of the shared views and perspectives between the writer and his character. It suggests that both Irving and Rip are characterized by their aversion to politics and by their deep love of nature. Due to the numerous and striking resemblances between the fictional hero and his creator, this essay argues that Rip is a reflection of Irving's character and personality.

This article focuses on the fundamental role that emotion memories play in constructing autobiographical narrations. It suggests that the analysis of emotion memories can provide a deep insight into a variety of processes and fields of individual and social life (Cavarero, 2000). Based on the analysis of emotion memories in life-story interviews, this article will show the deep-rooted interrelatedness between the self and its social environment with emotion memories as an influential element. This article aims to show that strong emotional experiences mould the interviewees' narrations because they penetrate and shape the remembered past and anticipated future by enhancing, suppressing and hence shaping past and future experiences. If turned into emotion memories, these experiences allow the channelling, taming and/or evoking of emotions. This practice relates different memories and life-story moments with each other and puts them into a new context. This article claims that emotion memories have therefore a crucial structuring effect for autobiographical narrations and are therefore also a valuable element of analysis of interviews. We claim that emotion memories become visible and therefore analysable as emotional expressions or emotives, as emotion performances intentionally performed or accidentally caused (Austin, 1975; Reddy, 2001).

Personal accounts help us understand notions of self, interpersonal relations, and historical events. Chinese Autobiographical Writing contains full translations of works by fifty individuals that illuminate the history and conventions of writing about oneself in the Chinese tradition. From poetry, letters, and diaries to statements in legal proceedings, these engaging and readable works draw us into the past and provide vivid details of life as it was lived from the pre-imperial period to the nineteenth century. Some focus on a person's entire life, others on a specific moment. Some have an element of humor, others are entirely serious. Taken together, these selections offer an intimate view of how Chinese men and women, both famous and obscure, reflected on their experiences as well as their personal struggles and innermost thoughts. With an introduction and list of additional readings for each selection, this volume is ideal for undergraduate courses on Chinese history, literature, religion, and women and family. Read individually, each piece illuminates a person, place, and moment. Read in chronological order, they highlight cultural change over time by showing how people explored new ways to represent themselves in writing.
