The humanities today use digital tools for their research projects. This training is an opportunity to review research data and FAIR principles in humanities projects. In this session, we provide an introduction to the research data life cycle, and then discuss how the digital humanities produce and must manage research data. We show what it means to create FAIR data, even before a project begins. We also see the management differences between the physical objects, their various digital forms and metadata, as well as the research data produced during the project. Finally, we finish with a review of tools and good practices, before showing examples, such as data reuse and the use of the CIDOC CRM ontology. ; Co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union

Exploring the rise of open scholarship in the digital era and its transformational impact on how knowledge is created, shared, and accessed, this open access book offers new insights on the history, development, and future directions of openness in the humanities and identifies key drivers, opportunities, and challenges. The concept of open research is reconfiguring scholarly communication across all disciplines, changing how understandings are produced through more accessible, participatory, ethical, and transparent approaches, reaching and involving far broader and more diverse publics. Considering multiple stakeholder perspectives, Arthur and Hearn argue that for the humanities to proactively contribute to open knowledge at the global scale, new ways of thinking are needed within every part of the system. In the open information economy, the humanities are on a trajectory following the sciences, but parts of the world are almost completely left out. A cultural shift is required for universities to unlock the powerful potential of humanities open scholarship. In this wide-ranging overview, the authors show why and how the global research community must work together for meaningful outcomes. Open scholarship has undergone a profound change since its beginnings from a call to action to an essential principle in research organizations internationally. However, the core impulse remains: to reshape the information environment and harness the world's knowledge for the greatest benefit of society. Digitale Technologien ermöglichen die softwaregestützte Sicherung, Erschließung und Bereitstellung von Interviewsammlungen und ihre sammlungsübergreifende Recherche und Analyse. Nach einem Forschungsüberblick skizziert der Artikel die an der Freien Universität zugänglichen digitalen Interviewsammlungen, insbesondere das Visual History Archive der Shoah Foundation und das Online-Archiv Zwangsarbeit 1939-1945 und ihre Nutzungsmöglichkeiten. Während Oral Historians traditionell meist wenige Interviews anhand der Transkripte analysierten, unterstützen digitale Interviewarchive nun vergleichende Untersuchungen anhand der originalen Audio- und Videoaufzeichnungen. Allerdings steht die digitale Aufbereitung von Oral History-Sammlungen vor großen Herausforderungen. Die Digital Humanities stellen dafür einige Ansätze bereit, etwa in den Bereichen Spracherkennung und Named Entity Recognition, Erschließungssoftware und Metadatenstandards, Persönlichkeitsschutz und Langzeitarchivierung, die der Artikel kurz vorstellt und diskutiert. Abschließend demonstriert ein Kurzvergleich von zwei Interviews prototypisch die Möglichkeiten einer digital unterstützten Interviewanalyse im Hinblick auf Multiperspektivität, Multimodalität und Multilingualität. Deutlich wird, dass die Digital Humanities der Oral History neue und faszinierende Forschungsperspektiven eröffnen.

There has been much written about the crisis in humanities education. Most of this published debate arises from scholars in Western universities and, at some level, can be seen as a reflection of a crisis about the nature of education and the role of universities in contemporary times in these societies. The crisis in humanities in places like India has been a part of their educational concerns for quite some time, but in this essay, Sarukkai argues that the quality of the crisis and the challenge to humanities education in India are different. For a globally sensitive humanities program, these different kinds of responses to humanities have to be taken into account.

"In this paper the authors investigate the importance of research infrastructures for arts and humanities research. They seek to outline the development of a digital research infrastructure localized in the science and engineering domain and framed within the concept of e-Science. The authors define the primary characteristics of e-Science as big data and big structures such as the grid and high performance computing. They will attempt to demonstrate the transfer of the e-Science paradigm to the humanities and to assess what worked and what did not. They then suggest how thinking about technology and infrastructure through and within the humanities can lead to transformation and finish with a suggestion that the future for humanities research infrastructures is best framed around the emerging idea of a humanities specific digital ecosystem."
