AbstractLebanon is expected to have gas resources in its Mediterranean basin, and these could turn the country into a natural gas producer over the next decade. Lebanon's economy and institutions will thus need to adapt to the challenges and opportunities that such change will bring. In this paper, we address how Lebanon's fiscal framework will need to be reformulated to take into account potential resource revenue. Designing a fiscal regime appropriately is an absolute prerequisite to make sure that the government can receive a fair share of the resources while investors face appropriate incentives to invest and develop the sector. This step should be followed by setting macro-fiscal anchors and supporting institutions. The prospective framework should be focused on ensuring fiscal sustainability and intergenerational equity, given the estimated relatively short horizon of Lebanon's gas resources. Strong institutional arrangements also need to underpin the prospective framework, to ensure that the pace of resource wealth's use is set in line with Lebanon's capacity constraints.

Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash fine particles (0–2 mm, BAF) are a potential building material, but their possible environmental risk and poor physical properties hinder their application scale. In this study, the cold bonded pelletizing technique is applied to produce artificial lightweight aggregates using BAF and other industrial waste powders, as a way of recycling BAF mainly. The properties of the produced aggregates are determined and compared with other artificial aggregates. Moreover, the growth mechanism of the pellet with BAF and the role of BAF on pellet strength are addressed. The leaching properties of this aggregate are evaluated according to the environmental legislation. In addition, this aggregate is used as natural aggregate replacement in concrete to investigate its influence on concrete properties.

AbstractInnovation intermediary organizations (IIOs) may build bridges between the demand and supply of knowledge. The understanding concerning the scope and functions of these intermediaries in the case of the agricultural sector is scarce, particularly for developing countries. The aim of this article is to discuss the functions played byIIOs operating in the segment of small farmers in the agricultural sector in the context of a developing country. The analysis allows extracting policy implications having in mind small farmers with different economic conditions and levels of innovativeness. This article uses a case study methodology. The main sources of information are interviews with members of the board and staff of the Produce Foundation, responsible for managing public resources to promote innovation processes in the agriculture sector in a specific state,Chiapas, as well as with farmers, technological suppliers, and researchers in this state.

We examined features of citizen science that influence data quality, inferential power, and usefulness in ecology. As background context for our examination, we considered topics such as ecological sampling (probability based, purposive, opportunistic), linkage between sampling technique and statistical inference (design based, model based), and scientific paradigms (confirmatory, exploratory). We distinguished several types of citizen science investigations, from intensive research with rigorous protocols targeting clearly articulated questions to mass‐participation internet‐based projects with opportunistic data collection lacking sampling design, and examined overarching objectives, design, analysis, volunteer training, and performance. We identified key features that influence data quality: project objectives, design and analysis, and volunteer training and performance. Projects with good designs, trained volunteers, and professional oversight can meet statistical criteria to produce high‐quality data with strong inferential power and therefore are well suited for ecological research objectives. Projects with opportunistic data collection, little or no sampling design, and minimal volunteer training are better suited for general objectives related to public education or data exploration because reliable statistical estimation can be difficult or impossible. In some cases, statistically robust analytical methods, external data, or both may increase the inferential power of certain opportunistically collected data. Ecological management, especially by government agencies, frequently requires data suitable for reliable inference. With standardized protocols, state‐of‐the‐art analytical methods, and well‐supervised programs, citizen science can make valuable contributions to conservation by increasing the scope of species monitoring efforts.
