Using ethnographic data gleaned from a foreign-managed Christian school in Indonesia, this article situates the ethnic prejudices of Indonesian Chinese parents and students toward Filipino teachers within the organizational and cultural politics of private schooling. It is argued that the commoditization of education as a form of market consumption alongside the masculinized international curriculum help shape the feminization of teachers from the Philippines. Catering to the aspirations of the country's minority ethnic Chinese, privately managed schools actively recruit trained teachers from the Philippines, many of whom are female and are perceived by students and their parents as exhibiting negative symbolic capital. In the process of their employment, they encounter occasional moments of less than complete success and challenges in their jobs. This article situates this prejudice within the cultural politics of masculinized Chinese schooling in Indonesia, while seeking to shed light on the role of Filipino work migrancy in Indonesia's formal employment sector.

This research explains why Mexico's 1968 student movement ended in the massacre of hundreds of students, while the peasant revolts that followed won land reform from the state. I argue that because Mexico's presidents managed each movement with both repression and concessions, other factors beyond the state's political opportunity structure explain these sharply contrasting social movement outcomes. The evidence strongly suggests that while Mexico's version of authoritarianism increased the odds of repression, each movement's levels of organization, disruption, and framing strategies determined the forms and degree of state violence. The analysis shows how politically salient frames may decrease the odds of repression or increase the odds of political alliances with state elites. It follows that political opportunities are more dynamic and dialogically emergent than previously theorized.

Das Bundesinstitut für Berufsbildung (BIBB) führt jedes Jahr Befragungen zur Gewinnung von Daten für die Berufsbildungsplanung durch. Dabei werden u.a. Auszubildende aus allen Berufen als direkt Betroffene zu ihrem Ausbildungserleben befragt. Ziel ist dabei nicht die Quantifizierung des Ausbildungserfolges, sondern eine möglichst umfassende Beschreibung des Ausbildungsgeschehens. Der Beitrag referiert Ergebnisse aus der zweiten Hauptbefragung, bei der es aus der Sicht der Auszubildenden um den wichtigsten Aspekt bzw. den prägendsten Eindruck von Ausbildung geht. Für die Befragung wurden drei Erfolgsdimensionen (Brauchbarkeit, Anforderungsniveau und Attraktion) ausgewählt. Die hier vorgelegte Bestandsaufnahme und schlaglichtartige Rückschau auf den Ausbildungsverlauf aus der individuellen Sicht der Bildungsteilnehmer weist daraufhin, daß die Lehrpläne, die die Ausbildung inhaltlich festlegen, mit den Vorstellungen, Bedürfnissen und Wünschen der Auszubildenden nicht ausreichend kompatibel sind. Eine Verbesserung der Ausbildung im dualen System könnte daher z.T. schon durch eine Beteiligung der Auszubildenden bei der Erarbeitung von Ausbildungsordnungen erreicht werden. (ICH)

The concepts of commitment and anxiety are essential components of the teaching process, and these concepts come across as the commitment to and concern of mathematics in the field of mathematics learning. This study aims to explore the effect of secondary school students' mathematics class commitment and anxiety on mathematics success. Another subject studied is the direct and indirect effects of the mathematics class commitment and anxiety on mathematics success. The study is of the quantitative method and follows the survey method. The research was carried out with 488 pupils (257 female and 231 male), selected with simple random sampling, studying in a secondary school in a province in the Turkey's Eastern Anatolia Region. "Personal Information Form", "Student Engagement in Mathematics Scale" and "Mathematics Anxiety-Apprehension Scale" was applied to the secondary school students as data collection tools. Significant relationships and effects have been identified between the secondary school students' mathematics class commitment and anxiety and their mathematics success. In addition, the direct and indirect effects of mathematics class commitment on success and anxiety in mathematics have also been calculated.

Making the transition from high school to college can be one of the biggest challenges in life. The first year dropout rate stands at 26% nationally. Adolescent decision-making literature suggests that youths can achieve greater success and reduce negative consequences during their first year of college if they 1) increase knowledge of new social scene and academic protocols, and 2) work through a conjectural decision-making process prior to actual encounters. This program presents key points high school seniors "must know" in advance of their arrival on campus. It is research-based with first-hand advice from real college students including on-the-street video interviews. Topics cover: Choosing Classes, Test Strategies, Social Scene Changes, Budgeting, Roommates, Safety, Talking with Professors, Time Management, and more. The program is designed for any student planning to attend any 2 or 4-year college. Youth professionals can teach this loosely-scripted 1 or 2-hour PowerPoint-based seminar "out of the box." The $159 curriculum package is free to the first 250 responders.

PurposeUniversities are increasingly encountering high levels of national and international competition. In order for universities to continue with their business success and expansion, they have relied on developing and maintaining a differentiated brand identity by improving their branding strategy. The purpose of this paper is to examine the antecedents of students' identification with the brand of public universities in Iran.Design/methodology/approachSampling was done in multiple stages. In the first stage – using stratified sampling – students were recruited from distinct degree programs and universities based on the Iranian national demographic proportions. In the second stage, convenient sampling was used within each degree program category. For data collection, the interviewer distributed questionnaires among students regardless of age and gender. The number of questionnaires distributed in each university (i.e. the sample size in each university) was determined using the number of students in the country and percentage of students at each university.FindingsThe results showed support for the hypothesized positive relationship between brand identification and the antecedent factors including prestige, interorganizational and intraorganizational competition. On the other hand, the results showed no significant relationship between brand identification and the antecedent factors including distinctiveness and memorable experience. Outcomes (i.e. word-of-mouth, active engagement and loyalty) of brand identification were also tested and their relationships with brand identification are supported.Research limitations/implicationsThis study was conducted in the higher education sector in one cosmopolitan Iranian city (i.e. Tehran) to which Iranians from other cities travel to for studying. Thus, the results of this survey include a variety of sub-cultures. In the future, a study that incorporates all major metropolitan cities of Iran may increase the generalizability of the findings. Unrelated to the purpose of this study, a future research study may extend the currently studied geographical dimensions and examine the antecedents of students' identification with the brand of public universities across different nations using a cross-cultural approach.Practical implicationsA study of the antecedents of students' identification with the university brand can provide a guide for universities to manage their brand and marketing strategies. Managers of higher education institutions can take important steps in establishing a link between students and university brands. Managers can highlight interorganizational competitions. The authors recommended universities publicize and honor students' success in academic competitions on the university website, via ceremonies dedicated to the student winners, and using print banners that identifies their name and achievement, among other mediums. Additionally, competitions can be promoted among students through professors and motivational speeches from recognized leaders.Originality/valueResults revealed that brand prestige of public universities positively affects students' identification. This study highlights the importance of national and international rankings of universities and the sensitivity of students to such rankings. Undoubtedly, this is evident in Iranian students' behavior in selecting their university. Additionally, this study showed that brand distinctiveness of public universities does not significantly affect students' identification with the university brand. Further examination is recommended to help explain this finding and a cross-cultural comparison will assist in this endeavor.

The article is dedicated to the sociological interpretation of such a phenomenon as human capital transfer in educational communities. The first part reveals the content of the concept of «transfer of students' human capital», while justifying its application in the study of the educational failure/success of schoolchildren and students. The second part presents a theoretical model of the considered phenomenon through such structural elements as goals, subjects, processes and mechanisms. The third part is devoted to the contradictions in the transfer of human capital within educational communities in Russia. The contradictions between goals and interests of the subjects of education are regarded as the key ones. The final part expands on how significant the concept under consideration is to sociology of education. The results of an interdisciplinary study conducted in 2019–2021 in Sverdlovsk region's educational facilities (schools, colleges, universities) serve as the empirical foundation for the article. It is shown that transfer of students' human capital is a kind of capital movement, with its features determined by the social nature of educational activities and interaction. The process under study is associated with such a phenomenon as academic success/failure of students, given that while it unfolds the human capital of schoolchildren and students can either be developed or depleted. The transfer of human capital involves three groups of education subjects — actors, agents and participants who perform certain social roles and possess varying opportunities for regulating this process. The empirical data is interpreted based on the proposed theoretical model, with the results indicating the contradictions of the goals, vectors and results of the transfer of human capital among Russian students.

Relevance. The student's age plays a key role in the process of educational and professional socialization of the individual, during which the stage of growing up, developing a sense of identity and planning their future takes place. One of these stages is the process of educational activity, which plays an important role in strengthening faith in one's own success, the ability to be productive. However, there are also obstacles that limit the complex formation of personality ‒ procrastination in postponing academic affairs or academic procrastination.The purpose is to determine the nature of the formation of academic procrastination of students, as well as to identify the importance of motivation in the structure of these factors.Objectives: to conduct an empirical study and analyze the reasons for the formation of academic procrastination of students; to study the educational motives of students, to determine the fundamental difference between the performance of long-term and daily educational tasks, cases of willing fulfillment of these tasks, as well as the emotional prerequisites of students who have decided not to perform educational tasks, regardless of their urgency and time costs.Methodology. The study used a methodology aimed at identifying the motives of educational activity among students, the methodology "PASS procrastination assessment Scale" in the adaptation of M. V. Zvereva, and factor analysis by the method of principal components, as well as a survey of student youth by means of a questionnaire.Results. Interpretation of the data obtained allowed us to confirm the existence of the problem of academic procrastination and its impact on academic motivation among students. Professional and educational-cognitive motives are among the driving motives that guide students to academic activity. The most common form of academic procrastination is procrastination in completing long-term tasks.Conclusions. Further sociological research should take into account a whole set of theoretical and methodological grounds on the basis of which it is possible to present the phenomenon of academic procrastination in its entirety and totality.

This book explores new grounds that public diplomacy is entering today, as domestic publics come to the forefront of the policy -- acting both as foreign policy constituencies and public diplomacy actors cooperating with their foreign counterparts. The author discusses the phenomena of public diplomacy's domestic dimension described as government's ability to engage its own society in foreign policy practices through information, cooperation and identity-defining. By analysing data from over 80 recorded interviews with Australian, Norwegian and American public diplomacy practitioners, this volume illustrates both successful and unsuccessful models of such cooperation.
