DeafBlind individuals are resilient human beings who face significant and complex challenges in all aspects of life. Challenges include access to information, communication, academics, social activities, identity, independence, mobility, and moving around in the world. Recently, more DeafBlind students are attending higher education institutions. Therefore, this study focuses on discovering experiences and perspectives of DeafBlind college students who attend a bilingual and bicultural university for sighted Deaf students, where there are a limited number of DeafBlind students. Personal interviews and observations are used to explore how DeafBlind adults navigated college life and what coping strategies they used to overcome academic and social challenges. A grounded theory-based approach was used, as an analysis, as there is limited information and research available about DeafBlind college individuals. Insights and strategies are provided to support new DeafBlind students who plan to attend post-secondary education or are already attending college.

AbstractNational day speeches play an explicit part in defining national identities. In this article, we examine how mayors in Norwegian municipalities reflect on Norway's increased diversity in their 17 May speeches. National day speeches in Norway are supposed to focus on unity, not conflict. Yet, what have they become in the context of diversity? In applying theoretical perspectives on nations, rituals and language to data consisting of a selection of speeches, our analysis identifies themes that structure a typical 17 May speech. We explore the use of plural pronouns in the speeches and how they make Norwegian national identity more or less accessible for people with minority backgrounds. By including ethnic minorities in national day rhetoric, the speakers negotiate who belongs in the Norwegian community in a less directly political way than in everyday life. Yet, whilst the genre is celebratory, the national day speeches also echo different political attitudes towards diversity and integration.

AbstractThis article investigates aspects of farmers' wellbeing in the context of their participation in an agro‐environmental scheme (AES), the North Yorkshire Cornfield Flowers Project (CFP) in the North East of England. Recent developments in wellbeing studies have informed data collection and analysis. Ethnographic data was gathered via observation, field notes and semi‐structured interviews with farmers and non‐farmer volunteers. The article discusses how farmers' social activity, identity, status and place belonging are enhanced through participation in CFP, and how this might promote their continued AES work. Recognising the potential for AES participation to enhance farmer's wellbeing may demonstrate added value of AES and strengthen the argument for AES funding once the UK leaves the European Union. There is currently little existing evidence in the literature to support this since with only a few exceptions, wellbeing has been characteristically neglected in rural studies research.

AbstractContemporary radical right‐wing populism is generally associated with nativism, usually defined as an intense hostility to anything deemed alien and threatening to national cohesion. This article explores the origins and evolution of nativism in three major nineteenth‐century populist movements – antebellum Know Nothingism and post‐civil‐war agrarian populism in the United States and late nineteenth‐century Boulangism in France. All of them advanced nativist propositions to bolster their populist agenda, yet not of the same nature and to the same extent. These differences can largely be explained by the targets of populist mobilization and the constituency at which it was aimed. The cases suggest that nativism plays an important role in populist mobilization, not least because it allows populist movements to transcend differences between social groups and gives them an opportunity to promote themselves as the champions of collective identity – a concern central to the contemporary radical populist right.

So far, the diffusion of texts in non-European languages, which have been essential in creating transoceanic links for centuries, have hardly been adequately considered in studies on the Indian Ocean. This article focuses on the appropriation of Arabic historiographic text into the precolonial Swahili poetic genre of the utendi. In contrast to previous analyses that have highlighted the appropriation of text to fit local discourses of identity, Vierke argues that the relationship between the Swahili translation and the previous Arabic text is basically aesthetic. Drawing on the concept of mimesis as advanced by Michael Taussig and Matthias Krings, Vierke shows that the Swahili poet makes an effort to imitate the original by re-evoking its sceneries as well as its tone in palpable Swahili imagery and meter. The connection over the Indian Ocean is hence not merely discursive, but, in Taussig's terms, "palpable" and "sensuous."

This article examines the relationship between Francoism and the Portuguese Estado Novo in the context of state control of workers' leisure time. The two Iberian Fascist dictatorships reacted to the international political isolation they were experiencing by seeking to strengthen their mutual ties during a period extending from the end of the Second World War until the mid-1950s. In the sphere of leisure, this was accomplished by means of two social tourism programmes: hosting workers from the neighbouring country in state holiday centres, and organizing trips in order to get to know the monuments and culture of the other country. These trips and vacations were used by the Franco Regime and the Estado Novo as a means of political and ideological indoctrination of workers. They were also intended to improve the perception of the national identity among the visitors, thus projecting a certain national image abroad.

AbstractThis article examines the Canadian Charter with reference to "the British connection" and "the Americanization thesis." It also attempts to demonstrate the importance of Montesquieu'sThe Spirit of the Lawsin addressing these issues. Pierre Trudeau insisted that a Charter of Human Rights would provide Canadians with a new beginning and settle difficult questions about the Canadian identity. His critics said that fundamental rights were already protected because Canada had a constitution similar in principle to the United Kingdom, and that the proposed Charter was a step in the Americanization of Canada. What a Montesquieuean analysis helps to identify are significant limitations in both "the British connection" account and "the Americanization thesis." And, by the avoiding the abstract universalism of Trudeau's "inalienable rights" theorizing and Dworkin's "rights as trumps" regime, a Montesquieuean analysis also helps to demonstrate the distinctiveness of Canadian constitutionalism from Confederation to the Charter.

Abstract
This article analyzes how hip-hop as a social movement influenced youth with a Muslim religious background in Austria. The study examines the influence of African American activist Malcolm X, a central figure in hip-hop culture, on young people in Austria in the 1990s, and specifically his influence on the Islamic Group of Upper Austria (IG OÖ), a social-movement organization founded in 1995. The article also explores what meaning hip-hop and Malcolm X had in the genesis of this group, focusing on syncretic identity construction and how youth from different contexts utilized hip-hop and Malcolm X's legacy to give meaning and mobility to their lives. The fusion of religion and youth culture created an alternative culture as an expression of protest against a hegemonic lifestyle and is interpreted as a struggle for recognition. Seven narrative interviews help analyze this never-before-documented history.

This essay focuses on South African artist Sharlene Khan's 2016 multimedia project When the Moon Waxes Red in order to examine political culture in postapartheid South Africa. At the heart of Khan's project is the Indian indentureship experience. The author argues that the return to the indentureship experience in cultural production disrupts the linear progressive narrative of the postapartheid nation by revealing how the traumas of the past resonate in the present. Furthermore Khan's project opens up questions around racial formations, memory, history, and national identity in the postapartheid period. Through an analysis of her aesthetic practice, this essay examines the way the artist forges a transnational Afro-Asian feminist framework that links Africa, Asia, and the Americas by emphasizing the various forms of violence—state, domestic, sexual, racial, colonial, apartheid, imperial, neoliberal—that connect black and brown lives both in the global South and global North.

This essay engages with visual cues that point to an afterlife of indentureship across a culture, history, and economics of labor, evident as a felt presence or absence in photographic representations of Caribbean persons. The author re-views photographs (both archival and artistic) taken in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries with the aim of advancing a notion of indentureship, at once larger and more circumscribed than Indo-Caribbean identity. This goal is underscored by three premises: visualization connects documentary sources to their imaginative coordinates; dynamics of affect, memory, and history related to indentureship are mobilized in the photographic arts of the Caribbean diaspora; and the aesthetic is a conceptual space with cultural resonance for the descendants of indentured laborers. In essence, the author finds that visual evidence of an indentured past requires the arts of imagination to understand the invisible and visible currents still present.

Abstract
Recent work in language and sexuality has emphasized globalization and multilingualism as important areas of investigation (Bucholtz & Hall 2006, Leap & Boellstorff 2003, Murray 2014). Concomitantly, other scholars have employed the construct of sexual fluidity as a metaphor for linguistic fluidity (Otsuji & Pennycook 2010, Pennycook & Otsuji 2015). Few studies, however, have examined how sexual and linguistic fluidity intersect in individual experience. This paper examines metalinguistic discourse in three fictional novels involving bisexual, bilingual characters in order to understand how talk about language informs representations of sexualities. In these texts bilingualism functions in constructing access to queer communities, authenticity, belonging, and emotional control for bisexual characters. Further, sexual and linguistic fluidity are portrayed as lifespan processes embedded in specific time periods. Such understandings point to a need for historical approaches to fluidity that capture longer timescales and multiple dimensions of linguistic and sexual desire, practice, and identity.

Local trend can be spread quickly to the entire world because of the improvement of mass media's effect. Through Korean drama, people of Indonesia got enough details about Korean fashion, called K-Style. K-Style surprisingly attracted the teen audience and motivated them to imitate those styles. Peer Group Interactions also take an important role in K-Style imitation behavior. Necessities for being praised and accepted made their personality became capricious and emotionally unstable. For that reason, this study aims to analyze the influence of intensity of Korean drama program in television and Peer Group Interactions to K-Style imitation behavior among teenagers.

The role of Islam and Muslims in secular Hindu South Asia is central to debates about who belongs and what constitutes national identity. This article examines the symbolic and abstract dimensions of the representations of Muslim minority belonging in the secular but Hindu majority state of Nepal. Through analysis of discourses in Nepal (English, Urdu and Nepali) about Muslims, I argue there is an underlying narrative representing Muslims as either cooperative supporters of Hindu religious life in a Hindu majority culture or as dangerous non-patriots with proclivities to violence. I argue that both representations are problematic, as neither correspond with the lived realities of this internally diverse and increasingly globalised religious minority. I also attempt to demonstrate that these narrative tropes bring into view important distinctions between religion as an abstract category and religion as a lived reality for Muslims in contemporary South Asia.

Abstract By reconstructing major events that took place over the past 50 years in a small caiçara village situated within the Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar, São Paulo, this article explores the issue of environmentality, a process through which local people incorporate mandates of environmental governance and policies, progressively mobilizing and performing the position of environmental stewards. In 2003, this community was recognized as a quilombo reminiscent. The recognition led to a self-division of the community into two groups with around 35 families each. One group maintained a caiçara self-designation, whereas the other adopted a quilombola identity. Using qualitative data obtained through long-term participant observation and interviews with local residents, the article shows that over time, socioeconomic, environmental, institutional and cultural changes, culminating with quilombola recognition, have contributed to an ongoing formation of a "green collective" among quilombola families.

The paper studies the recent upward trend in agriculture producers of urban origin or of rural origin that adopted an urban carrier, recently settled in the French rural areas that claim peasant identity. Critics of the "productiviste" agriculture, they adopt practices that respect nature and follow the local habits. These practices match not only the concerns of consumers alarmed by the health scandals related to agricultural production, but also the democratization of high-end gastronomy looking for products with high flavor qualities. It follows an increase in the symbolic value of what is considered patrimony or of excellent flavor. This contributes largely to the success of these former urban people particularly able to put together a show claiming to conduct traditional farm production. This brings them success, highly in contrast with the current crisis in French agriculture, but it does not seem to represent the broad agricultural production.
