1 July 1523, Hendrik Vos and Johan van den Esschen died by burning at
the stake on the Grand-Place in Brussels. They were the first martyrs of
the Reformation.

Following this event, the Faculty of Protestant Theology and Religious
Studies (FPTR) in Brussels organized a colloquium to discuss what has
changed in the 500 years since the first martyrs of the Reformation.
After an historical introduction to set the scene regarding 1 July 1523,
this colloquium dealt with the consequences of the Reformation on
various and diverse topics that include secularization, the role of women, democracy, virtue ethics, interreligious dialogue, ending with a proposal on how to move forward.

This book can be a starting point for further scientific research, especially in the area of secularization, women's emancipation, and the beginning of the Jewish-Christian dialogue.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in the Reformation and its
consequences.

This volume provides a fresh and exciting perspective on the religious and political history of seventeenth century Europe by focusing on the life of the German prophet Ludwig Friedrich Gifftheil. Between 1624 and 1661, Gifftheil travelled across Europe, petitioning rulers to bring an end to the continent's endemic warfare. When these requests fell on deaf ears, Gifftheil decided to wage a holy war to establish a divine peace through violence.

Die Veröffentlichung setzt sich mit Texten auseinander, die explizit zur Gewalt aufrufen und dafür religiöse Argumente anführen. Dabei ist meist nicht eindeutig zu entscheiden, inwiefern ein religiöses Motiv Handlungen veranlasst oder getroffene Entscheidungen nachträglich rechtfertigt. Oft sind Veranlassung und Rechtfertigung ineinander verwoben. Es werden verschiedene Formen von religiöser Gewaltbegründung beschrieben. Dabei wird berücksichtigt, dass solchen Aufrufen innerhalb der jeweiligen Religionsgemeinschaft oftmals widersprochen werden. Wo sie vorliegen, sollen auch Gegengutachten, Mahnschreiben, Worte der Mäßigung, Ächtung der Gewaltanwendung zu Wort kommen. Auf diese Weise wird sichtbar, dass religiöse Traditionen nie zwangsläufig zu Gewalt führen, sondern nur über einzelne Interpretationen, die sich gegen andere Interpretationen durchsetzen. Post-communism has determined the social and political reality in Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe for the last 25 years. A characteristic phenomenon during this time is a religious revival in the societies that were subject to intense atheization under the conditions of communist totalitarianism. This process can be observed in Ukraine, Belarus and Serbia. Undoubtedly, in all three cases, the Orthodox faith and the institutions that represent it have become an important element of the political culture.
