Many people working in the field of religion and ecology share a concern for peace in this world. For example, the geologian Thomas Berry wrote a poignant essay presenting his vision of the peace of the Earth, a Pax Gaia, which was published in his important book, Dream of the Earth (1988). In crafting a response to the ecological crisis, Berry repeatedly wrote with urgency about the need to rediscover and foster wonder amongst humans in relation to both the Earth and universe communities. Broadly taking these two features of Berry's work as its jumping off point, this article unfolds select ways to couple wonder, the moral imagination and socio-ecological flourishing at a time of climate change and social unrest, in the service of substantive peace. Specifically, the authors offer a discussion of wonder as it can be understood from reading Berry's work. Moving towards a contemporary contextual ethical application, this article then draws on the work of conflict transformation theorist and practitioner Jean Paul Lederach concerning the moral imagination, which he characterizes as the art and soul of building peace. The authors conclude by proposing a path towards an authentic Pax Gaia that broadens the scope of wonder to include more fully its human component, and broadens the scope of the moral imagination to include more fully its biological and geological components. It is in this way, this article suggests that we can foster an integral approach to peace, one characterized by socio-ecological flourishing.

Proselytism in India is both a stimulating theoretical problem and a burning political issue. Such zealous endeavors to win over converts are part of the Christian tradition, but have remained relatively marginal in Hinduism and even in Islam. Although Hinduism is generally described as non-missionary, the Hindu sectarian traditions have endowed it with an important missionary dimension. Islam, on the other hand, has not been as intent on making converts as has often been suggested : for a long time, only some Shiite sects have displayed a real missionary zeal. Hence the following theoretical question: in what conditions do religions become missionary? The intrusion of Christianity in India, following the implantation of the first merchant companies in the 16th century, and especially in the wake of the British conquest in the end of the 18th century, brought about defensive reactions at first, as in the case of Nepal. Later, strategies of imitation were set up, namely Hindu and Muslim forms of "counter-proselytism". This issue is devoted to a study of the emergence of such proselytizing tendencies in Hinduism and Islam. It includes a description of this process as well as an analysis of the theoretical questions it raises, among which one may cite the way in which Hinduism and Islam have had to define themselves in new terms so as to develop their new proselytizing strategies, and the influence of those new attitudes on the religious conflicts that have been plaguing the Indian subcontinent for a century.

After the work accomplished by G. Le Bras and his disciples it is now possible to envisage a « history of religious mentalities in the modem Western world». The numerous investigations of retrospective sociology undertaken these last years call for a summing up to give them their full significance at the level of the collective mentality. But this collective mentality was — and still is — the product of the conflict and interpenetration of two cultures, the one predominating and the other more or less repressed. The researcher must always keep in mind this dialectical exchange between two worlds, and the religious facts of the past will be best apprehended by focusing on the gap between what was prescribed and what was actually experienced.
This key makes it possible to tackle the dechristianization question A correct evaluation can only be proposed on the basis of a study of Christianization which has not yet been undertaken. Thus few people have seen that the great moment for Western Christianization was not the Middle Ages but the « modern» period (16th to 18th centuries), beginning with the two Reforms which, in spite of their apparent rivalry, were in fact interdependent. The Christianization of this period had to depend on the State and practise a pedagogy of fear. Hence its gradual enfeeblement and the current decline of the model of Christian religion prevalent in the classical age.
Must it be concluded from this that Christianity, in its essence, always relates to this model ?
