Democrates. De couenientia militiae cum Christiana religione dialogus by Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda, translated into Castilian by Antonio Barba, uses the Ethics of Aristotle as one of its main sources. I will focus in this article on two aspects: firstly, I will analyse the treatment of the virtue of magnanimity and his compatibility with the Christian virtues of humility and poverty. Secondly, I will connect the contents of this dialogue with the accusations Sepulveda received because of his Commentaries on Aristotelian Ethics. Both of these elements shed light on the moral and religious developments that will shape Modernity.
