Having developed a simple money multiplier model of the money supply, the author investigates the behaviour of the money multiplier in Bangladesh for the period 1972 to 1993. His findings suggest that although the deposit-currency ratio equation is stable, the equations of the time-deposit ratio and the excess reserves-deposit ratio are unstable. (DÜI-Sen)

A series of international and regional events since mid-1989 has created new challenges for Cuban policy toward Central America. According to the author, Cuba is maintaining its principles and promoting its interests in a complex and hostile political context. He explores opportunities for Cuban foreign policy in Central America against the backdrop of contradictions in US involvement in respect to this region

The rapid economic growth in South Korea, Taiwan and Japan has been acknowledged, but the underlying divergent organizational modes of their economies have not been systematically studied. The author inquires how and why divergent modes of economic organizations become established in these countries, and how they have been shaped in Japan, Taiwan and South Korea over time. (DÜI-Sen)

The author examines private and commercial profitability from the Western Gandak Canal Project (WGCP) in Eastern Uttar Pradesh and shows that the WGCP has the high benefit-cost ratio of 3.92. As a result of the project, local farmers as a group derive Rs. 3.92 worth of income benefits for each rupee they spend irrigation. (DÜI-Sen)

Having discussed the meaning of internationalization and the many different interpretations of this concept in Japan, the author briefly outlines the complex political, economic, and social factors for internationalization and examines the coming of the age of the internationalization in Japan at the local level, during the period of 1988-'91 with special reference to Kyoto. This article is a precis of the Michael Shanks Memorial Lecture delivered to the Royal Society on 5 December 1990. In it the author raises a number of philosophical questions about the nature of the corporate enterprise which challenge some of the shibboleths of current thinking. It is published in the expectation that it will stimulate thought and comment.

Family-centered therapeutic and educational approaches generally include men. However, fewer men than women utilize the services of most family agencies. The author describes a three-generational men's retreat for grandfathers, fathers, and sons. The program allowed participants to observe the affirmative and painful interactions of other participants as well as provide valuable contributions of their own.

Critique of recent attempts to make sense of the history and anthropology of the native Caribbean. These works are based on the writings of Columbus and his companions and assume that there were 2 tribes: the Arawaks and Caribs. Author argues however that much work is needed to untangle the complex imbrication of native Caribbean and European colonial history.

The struggle against distance is basic to all societies. And yet, the quest for ubiquity clashes with the need to differenciate, which is necessary as well. Based on the assumption that space is a system, the author tries to formalize the on-going genesis of alterity and of similarity in society's space organisation. Geography then becomes a historical actor.

The author highlights the role of values in determining agency policy by analyzing an agency's policy on sexual behavior of persons with cognitive disabilities in group homes. The value orientations of the social work staff, parents, Jewish community, and state government are compared. The conflicting values placed the agency in a quandary from which it extricated itself by resorting to a policy compromise.

The current conflict over the Israeli-occupied territories is intimately related to the character of Israel as a state formation. How are we to understand and conceptualize this relationship? The author discusses the significance of the occupation for alternative interpretations of Israeli state-building patterns. He concludes that these patterns are best explained if studied within the `frontier perspective'.

The article demonstrates that both the classical and the neoclassical theory of value are a transformation of conservation principles of the Physics of their time into Economics. Instead of basing value on nature, the author tries to emphasize a social theory of value that connects to early American institutionalism, which presents value as a contingent and socially constructed phenomenon.

However, as the author points out in a January 7, 1993 addendum, the agreement between NFL players and owners that occurred as the Journal went to press has tested the validity of the conjecture offered last fall.

After briefly discussing the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA) and its committees, the author scrutinizes the extent to which the bills submitted to the TGNA are amended in the committees. He notes that the Plans and Budget Committee is the most important committee followed by the Justice Committee and the Industry, Technology and Commerce Committee. (DÜI-Seu)

Traditional saving and credit practices are deep-rooted in the Niger. In the present article, the author has two objectives: To contribute to a better empirical understanding of the tontine practice in the rural sahelian milieu through a description of the situation in the Niger; to document and analyze an informal financial practice which resembles financial intermediation.
