Daniel Dor teaches in the Department of Communication at Tel Aviv University. His research interests include the linguistic consequences of globalization, the role of the media in the construction of political hegemony, and the cultural-biological evolution of language. He is the author of Intifada Hits the Headlines: How the Israeli Press Misreported the Outbreak of the Second Palestinian Uprising (2003).

The paper presents sources about the land ownership and land use among the indigenous nobles in Nueva España. The historical documents indicate that indigenous elites have been aware of economic activities related with Spanish elite status and wealth and engaged in such. The author tries to estimate how numerous those indigenous elites were and how rich they could have been.

Abstract: The third contribution to the symposium held at Ghent addresses the issue of a common legal terminology in Europe. In doing so, the author also presents first results of a research into that question undertaken last year. In particular, she discusses the following topics: the concept of contract; defects of consent; the discharge of a contractual relationship; and the impact of Community directives.

This article analyzes the apparently dysfunctional democracies that haven become common in Latin America. Although democratic in the conventional sense that national leadership is periodically contested and renewed through standardized electoral procedures, such regimes also exhibit systematic political dysfunctionality. The author evaluates experiences with democracy in Argentina, Colombia, and Venezuela in order to illustrate this concept, and examines their comparative and theoretical implications.

George Steinmetz is an associate professor of sociology at the University of Michigan. He is author of "Precoloniality and Colonial Subjectivity: Ethnographic Discourse and Native Policy in German Overseas Imperialism, 1780s–1914," in Political Power and Social Theory (2002), and has recently completed a manuscript on precolonial ethnographic discourse and colonial state formation in German Samoa, southwest Africa, and Qingdao.
