A critique of Theodor Adorno & Max Horkheimer's Dialectic of Enlightenment (1969) argues that it encourages students to adopt false beliefs that distract them from participating in worthwhile social reform. The first of five of these false theses is the belief that philosophy helps individuals to understand why humanity is "sinking into a new barbarism instead of entering into a truly human condition." The second false assumption is that the collapse of bourgeois civilization stems at least partially from Enlightenment thought that led to positivism & pragmatism. Further, they maintain there is nothing in contemporary US culture worth preserving, & subscribing to pragmatism is tantamount to rejecting all that once made human existence worthwhile. Their fifth erroneous assumption is that reformism is hopeless because its underlying defective philosophy reinforces the social order it is attempting to change. Many students who accepted these assumptions as facts became teachers & perpetuated the negativity that prevents students from giving serious attention to plausible utopian aims. J. Lindroth
