Dominant parties and democracies - are they really strange bedfellows? Malte Kaßner sheds light on the relation between one-party dominance and democracy from a comparative perspective. The study examines the key question how different types of dominant parties influence democracy in multicultural societies with the help of two case studies: South Africa and Malaysia. Both countries are characterized by an ethnically, linguistically and religiously plural society. The author analyses the two dominant parties African National Congress (ANC) and United Malays National Organization (UMNO) and their implications on democracy in the two countries. The focus of the present book is the impact of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) on the three main topics of private international law (PIL): jurisdiction, applicable law, and the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments. Sickness absenteeism is a widely researched workplace health problem that has long been seen as a cost to employers. However, recent literature indicates that the counterpart of absenteeism - termed as 'presenteeism' which refers to the practice of coming to work despite health complications, such as illness, injury or anxiety - often results in reduced productivity. Although presenteeism is much more costly compared to absenteeism, it is not yet common practice in organizations to measure the costs and use it as one of the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). The author presents the important issues related to the nature and extent of presenteeism and cites examples from different studies.
