This book aims to present a coherent picture of Germany's European policy during Merkels chancellorship. At the same time, it traces the development of the EU in the period 2005-2021. Accordingly, the European crises and the internal and external threats to the integration community are addressed, as well as the jointly developed solutions. Thus, on the one hand, the book shows what Germany was willing to do for Europe; on the other, it reveals how the EU was able to develop further as the most important point of reference for German politics and power. The Author Prof. Gisela Muller-Brandeck-Bocquet holds Jean Monnet Chair for European Studies and International Relations at the University of Würzburg.

This article reviews an extensive study of Israeli secondary school general history curricula and textbooks since the establishment of the state in 1948 until the present day. By analyzing the way in which Germany is presented in various contexts, the findings of the study indicate that, while the textbooks reflect a shift from an early censorious attitude to a factual approach, the curriculum continues to present national Jewish Zionism as the metanarrative. In this context, Germany is framed as a victimizer.

AbstractOne result of recent empirical research into the household‐formation systems of rural Europe during the pre‐industrial era has been an increasing emphasis upon variations in norms governing these formations among different European regions. Relatively little attention, however, has been directed toward understanding the origins of these regional variations, or (in view of the inevitable problems of available source material) empirically tracing these regional variations further backward in time. Historical sociologists and anthropologists concerned with pre‐1500 European household systems have rather tended to concentrate upon the emergence of Christian or post‐classical family systems in general. But recently more detailed work in quasi‐census‐type material in three widely scattered regions ‐ late‐Byzantine Greece, early‐Renaissance Tuscany, and late‐medieval England ‐has made it possible to argue that the broad regional variations now established for these regions on the eve of industrialisation now seem discernible from a much earlier era. Brief consideration of the empirical data for household sizes and types, and comparisons with later material, help to elucidate this.
