"This book addresses endemic issues of racism in news media at what is a critical moment in time; as journalists around the world speak out en masse against the prejudice and inequality in the industry. Jacob Gorender's (1922-2013) 1978 book, Colonial Slavery (O Escravismo Colonial), comes alive for English-language readers thanks to Bernd Reiter and Alejandro Reyes' brilliant translation. Gorender argued that slave-holding societies produced an economic system sui generis, not fitting into any of the established societal categories offered by Karl Marx and Max Weber. In 1992, the massive files of East Germany's infamous Ministry for the State Security, the Stasi, were made publicly available, and thousands of former East Germans began to confront their contents.
