This book explores the impact of right-wing political ideology on crime, the criminal justice system, and attitudes towards punishment in Britain. Grounded in a rigorous analysis of repeated cross-sectional surveys such as the British Social Attitudes Survey and the British Crime Survey, as well as individual-level cohort data such as the 1958 National Child Development Study and the 1970 British Cohort Study, it examines changes in long-term crime rates, criminal justice policies, and their integration with social and economic policies in Britain over four decades. It offers a detailed discussion of how radical social and economic changes affected the fear of crime and attitudes to punishment, and how well Thatcherite social and economic values were embedded in contemporary British society. Drawing on a wide literature across criminology, political science, sociology, and social policy, this book demonstrates how a thorough understanding of crime cannot take place without an examination of the wider social policies enacted, the life-courses of the individuals affected, and their communities and the political environment in which they live. It is essential reading for criminologists, sociologists, political philosophers, and social theorists alike since it combines thinking from political sciences, life-courses theories, and detailed analyses of the outcomes of social policy change.

This book examines authoritarian practices in relation to humanitarian negotiations. Utilising a wide variety of perspectives and examining a range of contexts, the book considers how humanitarians assess and engage with authoritarian practices and negotiate access to populations in danger.
Chapters provide insights at the macro, meso, and micro levels through case studies on the international and domestic legal and political framing of humanitarian contexts (Xinjiang, Afghanistan, Venezuela, Russia, and Syria), as well as the actual practice of negotiating with authoritarian regimes (Ethiopia). A theoretical grounding is provided through chapters elaborating on the ethics and trust-building dimensions of humanitarian negotiations, and an overview chapter provides a theoretical framework through which to analyse humanitarian negotiations against the backdrop of different types of authoritarian practices.
This book provides a wide-ranging view which broadens the frame of reference when considering how humanitarians view and engage with authoritarian practices. The objective is to both put these contexts into conceptual order and provide a firm theoretical basis for understanding the politics of humanitarian negotiations in such difficult contexts. An innovative series of case studies looking at the significance, meaning and social context of costume and textiles used in dance among a variety of ancient cultures and civilisations.Dress is at the core of dance. It adorns dancers, defines various roles and forms symbolic expressions that, for example, either bind people together or opposes them. It is a communicative tool that gives crucial information for understanding the dance as well as the culture and the sociological effects of a group of people. As such, dress transcends how it is seen visually to address what is being communicated. Nonetheless, studies in ancient dance have rarely taken clothing into consideration.Therefore, this publication gathers articles that give new perspectives and insights on ancient dances and their ancient textiles. Comprehension of ancient dance benefits from investigations undertaken through the lens of dress. And research on ancient dress is understood through its relation to body movement and performative rituals, thus reinforcing the progressive integration of an anthropological and sociological dimension into historical analysis of ancient textiles. For the first time, the two-way transfer of knowledge between dance studies and costume studies is connected via an innovative approach. Among the issues that are specifically addressed are the movement design of dress for dance, its sensory experience, gender and identity, reenactment and reception.The chronological range of the publication is limited to the ancient world (3rd millennium BC to 5th century AD), and the geographical definition is meant to be broad in order to promote a comparative approach and cross-cultural dialogue, as well as discourse between fields and disciplines.

Blood is not trivial; it questions the most intimate representations of human nature and is at the center of our imagination as human beings. Blood donation calls into question the body's status very concretely; It is the vehicle of our life and cannot be substituted or artificially synthesized. It highlights the very concepts of gift-giving and altruism.
Blood, therefore, defines man and the society in which he lives, and it is probably why all cultures constantly refer to the metaphorical power of blood. Whether communities are defined around a sacrifice that guarantees them divine protection or whether it is a question of hereditary characteristics, in all cases, the reference to blood establishes the social bond. For this reason, it is a subject that the social sciences cannot neglect.
In this regard, many scholars have pointed out that the ways and forms through which blood collection, storage, and distribution are organized in a given society represent a decisive indicator for assessing its institutions' moral and civil development.
This volume is part of this rich line of studies. It is aimed at illustrating and commenting on the results of a sample survey on young blood donors (18-35 years old) associated with AVIS, framing them in the context of the scientific debate on the gift and the role it plays in complex societies, starting from the founding and pioneering contribution of Richard Titmuss.

Double-Sided Antler and Bone Combs in Late Roman Britain rs the first detailed study and catalogue of a comb type that represents a new technology introduced into Britain towards the end of the 4th century AD and a major signifier of the late fourth- to fifth-century transition. Their end-plates were worked into a variety of decorative profiles, some clearly zoomorphic. Over time this decorative styling passed from elaborate to rudimentary, adding to the dating evidence for individual combs. As many combs survive only as small fragments, data collection has not been absolute but has concentrated on combs from burials, or with stylistically relevant end-plates, or those providing good dating or contextual evidence, the main aim of the study being to answer questions of typology, chronology and social distribution. A particularly distinctive feature within the assemblage from funerary contexts is the substantial number of these combs from Winchester, which together make up nearly a quarter of the wider British assemblage. It is proposed that a comb workshop was established in the town, and there is some evidence based on style and distribution that points to other workshops in the north and east, but these were not necessarily large and in some cases they appeared to serve only a local community, while Winchester and its hinterland appear to lie at the heart of the comb data.

Konkret geht es um fünf Formen einer veränderten wissenschaftlichen Praxis, die einen vereinfachten Zugang zu wissenschaftlicher Literatur (Open Access), wissenschaftlichen Daten (Open Data), Softwarecode (Open Source), forschungspraktischen Methoden (Open Methodology) sowie Begutachtungsprozessen (Open Peer Review) ermöglichen sollen. Nach mehr als zwei Jahrzehnten der Erprobung steht eine breite Umsetzung trotz enormer Erwartungen und wissenschaftspolitischer Förderprogramme noch aus. Durch umfassende Studien mit Open-Science-Preisträger:innen werden Motivstrukturen, Verständnisse, Persönlichkeitsfaktoren, Sozialisations- und Sensibilisierungsprozesse sowie Rahmenbedingungen im Kontext von Open-Science-Praktiken rekonstruiert, die für die Verankerung von zentraler Bedeutung sind. Die Ergebnisse offenbaren komplexe Motivationslagen bei Wissenschaftler:innen und die Vielschichtigkeit von Open Science in der konkreten Praxis. Dies bietet den Wissenschaftsorganisationen und der Wissenschaftspolitik neue Ansätze zur Förderung von Open Science.

On 15 October 2020, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, Prof. Dr. Karl-Henrik Robèrt received a Radboud honorary doctorate in recognition of his work on strategic sustainable development. This edition includes honorary promotor Han van Krieken's laudatio, Karl-Henrik Robèrt's acceptance speech, and a detailed recollection of his professional history.
Trained as an oncologist, Dr. Karl-Henrik Robèrt became aware in the last decades of the twentieth century that systematically increasing air, soil and water pollution in the environment were threatening global health. It became his goal to make people aware of the environmental problems and to develop a framework for sustainable development. In 1989, he founded 'The Natural Step', an organisation that initiated the development of the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development, which later became a topic for further refinements through systematic international cooperation between scientists, and leaders from public and private sectors. The international hub for this work is Blekinge Technical Institute, where Dr Robèrt holds his chair. For his work, Robèrt received in 2000 the Blue Planet Prize - the 'Nobel Prize' for sustainability.
Honorary promotor Han van Krieken: "It is for a variety of reasons that Radboud University wants to honour Professor Karl-Henrik Robèrt. Our university's new Strategic Plan defines explicitly our 'responsibility for the world in which we live'. It states as one of our goals that 'we want to be in the vanguard when it comes to achieving the United Nations' sustainable development goals and to make our own contribution to the changes needed in the world in the coming decades'. Professor Robèrt can show us ways in which we can translate these goals more effectively."

Questions of responsibility arise at all levels of health care. Most prominent has been the issue of patient responsibility. Some health conditions that risk death or serious harm are partly the result of lifestyle behaviours such as smoking, lack of exercise, or extreme sports. Are patients with such conditions responsible for them? If so, might healthcare providers, be they state-run systems or private entities, be justified in treating such patients differently? And if they are, which forms of differential treatment are justified? Responsibility isn't just relevant for patients. Even when individuals affect their health through voluntary behaviour, other influences are also at work before, during, and after the patient's interaction with the health care system. What are the responsibilities of individual clinicians and other medical professionals, when thinking about individual and public health? What about institutions such as governments or national health care services, or society as a whole? This collection brings together work by world-renowned experts in population ethics, distributive justice, philosophy of action, cognitive science, and medical ethics in order to push the debate forward by elucidating our understanding of these questions, their possible answers, and how they are related.

This open access book draws together key research from the UK Climate Resilience programme. It focuses on topics central to the programme's research agenda, including improved characterisation and quantification of climate risks, enhanced understanding of the management of climate risks, and the development and delivery of climate services. Key chapters address the challenges inherent to undertaking resilience research, including how to make the term 'climate resilience' usable and useful, co-producing research between academics, policy makers and practitioners, and engaging and communicating outside of academia. This open access book offers a comprehensive overview of available techniques and approaches to explore large social media corpora, using as an illustrative case study the Coronavirus Twitter corpus. First, the author describes in detail a number of methods, strategies, and tools that can be used to access, manage, and explore large Twitter/X corpora, including both user-friendly applications and more advanced methods that involve the use of data management skills and custom programming scripts. He goes on to show how these tools and methods are applied to explore one of the largest Twitter datasets on the COVID-19 pandemic publicly released, covering the two years when the pandemic had the strongest impact on society. Specifically, keyword extraction, topic modelling, sentiment analysis, and hashtag analysis methods are described, contrasted, and applied to extract information from the Coronavirus Twitter Corpus. The book will be of interest to students and researchers in fields that make use of big data to address societal and linguistic concerns, including corpus linguistics, sociology, psychology, and economics.

The bilingual volume, which emerged from an international colloquium at Villa Vigoni, focuses on Italy against the backdrop of current political, social and economic change processes that are challenging Europe. The focus will therefore be on central crystallisation points as well as challenges and fields of action in a European dimension, which can be made fruitful for the communication of current, differentiated and thus sustainable images of Italy in German-language education. The aim is to make a contribution to strengthening the Italian-German dialogue in the European context and also to the increasingly endangered German-language Italian studies. Interdisciplinary German-Italian-European research approaches will be presented in three sections on the following main topics: transcultural approaches and the culture of remembrance in theory and the arts, German-Italian-European education and understanding and current problem areas in Europe using Italy as an example.

Die Beiträge zeigen, wie im Rahmen des Graduiertenkollegs "Mittelstadt als Mitmachstadt" Stadtforschung und Mittelstadtpraxis zusammenwirken, um gemeinsam Impulse für die Transformation kleiner Mittelstädte zu entwickeln.
