An interview with Maria Mies, West German feminist, activist, & sociologist, with concerns ranging from exploitation in the Third World to racist implications of the new reproductive technologies. Mies sees the divisions in feminism as a result of capitalist patriarchy's divide-&-rule strategy. The way that women & women's work are treated in Karl Marx's writings & by contemporary Marxists is discussed. Marx unintentionally contributed to the naturalization of women's work by calling wage labor productive & nonwage labor nonproductive or natural. Differences in men's & women's "object-relation to nature" are posited; men cannot see their bodies as productive & rely on tools, but the invention of & monopoly of control over destructive weapons changed the relationships among men & women. The connections between industrial interests & religious fundamentalism in India are described. A feminist concept of labor & economics would be based on cooperative, reciprocal relationships between woman & nature. The feminist critique of science, the methodological principles of feminist research, & the reactions of academics to the union of scholarly & political pursuits are among the other topics covered.
