AbstractStudies of agricultural change in the EU have disregarded the European Parliament on the grounds that it enjoys limited formal policy‐making prerogatives in this domain. Contrary to perceptions of parliamentary powerlessness, it is argued here that European Parliament committees can steer change by manipulating the formal institutional parameters defining their actions. The analysis shows how shifting patterns of farm politics in the last 15 years have enabled the European Parliament to promote key public concerns on the EU farm agenda. It fits one more piece into the puzzle of agricultural change by shedding light on the work of parliamentary committees.

Presenting a study of coalition politics in India, this book argues that there has been a significant change from the post-independence one-party dominated polity. It also examines why coalition politics has become a dominant feature through renewed emphasis on questions of identity, dominant ideological dispositions, and regional preferences.

In diesem Artikel wird der Nordische Gewerkschaftsrat (NFS) vorgestellt. Der NFS wurde 1972 mit dem Ziel gegründet, die Zusammenarbeit zwischen den nordischen Gewerkschaften zu stärken. Zur gleichen Zeit waren einige nordische Länder dabei, sich der, wie sie damals noch genannt wurde, Europäischen Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft (EWG) anzuschließen. Gleichzeitig spielten die Gewerkschaften aus diesen Ländern eine aktive Rolle bei der Gründung des Europäischen Gewerkschaftsbundes (EGB). In den vergangenen Jahren hat sich die Arbeit des NFS noch mehr europäischen Themen zugewandt, und die Zusammenarbeit vor allem mit Gewerkschaften in den baltischen Staaten wurde verstärkt. Die politischen Entwicklungen in Europa hatten somit einen großen Einfluß auf die nordischen Gewerkschaften, sie definierten ihre Beziehungen neu und verstärkten ihre transnationalen Aktivitäten. The appearance of J. R. Oldfield's study, Popular politics and British anti-slavery, first published by Manchester University Press in 1995, now in paperback and therefore available for a student market, is much to be welcomed. The book is already well established in its field. As James Walvin writes in his preface, 'Oldfield's research serves to clinch a simple but critical issue, namely that in the attack on the slave trade, popular revulsion was crucial' (p. vi). Building on the work of earlier scholars, notably Seymour Drescher, Hugh Honour and Clare Midgley, Oldfield has demonstrated the ways in which the abolition movement turned to mobilizing public opinion after 1787 against the slave trade. At the centre of his investigation are the petition campaigns of 1788 and 1792. In analysing anti-slavery sentiment he successfully brings together approaches which focus on the eighteenth century as a period of expansion in commercial society and popular forms of politics with the agenda of historians of the slave trade and slavery. The abolition movement, he argues, provided the prototype for modern reforming organizations. It was peopled by practical middle-class men who understood the importance of the expansion of the market and consumer choice. It succeeded in capturing the imagination of those, predominantly middle-class men and women, who were increasingly interested in engaging in forms of public debate and who had the resources, both in terms of time and money, to do so. His book, he argues, is a piece of 'thick description' which offers 'fresh insights into the increasingly powerful role of the middle classes in influencing Parliamentary politics from outside the confines of Westminster'

Определяются причины возникновения разногласий в вопросе миграции, дается характеристика текущего состояния миграционного конфликта Великобритании и Европейского союза и делается прогноз его дальнейшего развития. = On the basis of summarized data the article examines the current demographic situation in the United Kingdom and the labor market of the country, analyzes migration flows for the period from 2005 to 2015 and identifies the main reasons for migration. The paper presents a comparative analysis of the UK population and immigrants by age structure, studies public social protection expenditure and provides the results of the research by the University College London on the economic contribution made by immigrants to the UK. The cause of disagreement in migration matters is identified, the current state of the dispute between the United Kingdom and the European Union is defined and the projection of its further development is made.
