"In the social sciences, the occupation variable is used to derive socio-economic status and/or occupational prestige. This book describes occupation as an indicator of social status, occupation as an indicator of prestige and labor status as an indicator of position in the life-cycle. First, we identify variables necessary to measure occupation, employment and the labour force concept from ILO (International Labour Organisation, Geneva). Second, we introduce strategies for harmonizing the underlying social concepts of the measurements in surveys across countries. Third, we present our own instruments for measuring occupation and labour status in cross-national comparative surveys." (author's abstract)

"Different cultures and states use their national definition of 'private household'. In the EU nearly each country has an own definition of household. These definitions correspond to the cultural and national structures of social life. The differences result in diverse household compositions and unequal sizes across European nations. Comparing household measures over countries survey analysts face several inconveniences. The composition of the surveyed household has direct impact on the respondents answer about the household size. With regard to the sociological variables 'total household income' and 'socio economic status' of the individual household members, the composition of the household and, therefore, the definition by means of which this composition is determined, is of central importance. In a first step we summarize definitions of household used in national surveys across Europe. Same dwelling, sharing economic resources, common housekeeping and family ties are the main and mostly used criteria. In a second step we discuss the possible combinations of these elements and the strategies of operationalization in social surveys. The third part illustrates the findings. We use ESS, ECHP and administrative micro data from official statistics. The country differences become obvious. Our conclusion is a revised fieldwork instrument measuring household in social surveys that increases data comparability across cultures and countries." (author's abstract)

"In attempting to contact households for a survey, it is necessary to determine the timing of each call. Often, average 'best' times to call are used in order to determine when to place the first call(s). The timing of subsequent calls is then governed by very general rules. This paper tests an experimental method that uses multi-level models to predict the times that have the highest probability of contact for each household and uses the predictions from these models to prioritize cases for calling. The predictions are updated each day in real-time as additional data are gathered. The method is evaluated through a series of experiments on a telephone survey that used automated call scheduling and an experiment on a face-to-face survey, where a recommended calling time was delivered to interviewers. The results of these experiments are used to suggest directions for future research." (author's abstract)

"The significance of cross-national surveys for the social sciences has increased over the past decades and with it the number of cross-national datasets that researchers have access to. Cross-national surveys are typically large enterprises that demand dedicated efforts to coordinate the process of data collection in the participating countries. While cross-national surveys have addressed many important methodological problems, such as translation and the cultural applicability of concepts, the management of the data collection process has yet had little place in cross-national survey methodology. This paper describes the quality standards for data collection and their monitoring in the European Social Survey (ESS). In the ESS data are collected via face-to-face interviewing. In each country a different survey organisation carries out the data collection. Assuring the quality across the large number of survey organisations is a complex but indispensable task to achieve valid and comparable data." (author's abstract)

"Researchers have debated including a midpoint response in questionnaire scales, and they have debated what the selection of that response option represents. Using data from employee opinion surveys of a large financial services organization based primarily in the United States, this study explored whether the endorsement of the midpoint response is related to an item's readability and its perceived clarity. The results showed the endorsement of the midpoint response was significantly correlated with the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level index, average letters per word, and average number of syllables per word. The results also showed that as the perceived clarity of an item increases, the endorsement of the midpoint response decreases. These findings have important implications both to researchers and organizations that conduct surveys with their employees." (author's abstract)

"Recent survey design research has shown that small changes in the structure and visual layout of questions can affect respondents' answers. While the findings have provided strong evidence of such effects, they are limited by the homogeneity of their samples, in that many of these studies have used random samples of college students. In this paper, the authors examine the effects of seven experimental alterations in question format and visual design using data from a general population survey that allows us to examine the effects of demographic differences among respondents. Results from a 2005 random sample mail survey of 1,315 households in a small metropolitan region of the United States suggest that the visual layout of survey questions affects different demographic groups in similar ways." Die Agenda 2030 der UN mit ihren 17 globalen Nachhaltigkeitszielen (Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs) ist auf globaler und nationaler Ebene der massgebliche Orientierungsrahmen für Nachhaltigkeitspolitik. Aufgrund ihrer Kompetenzen in vielen Politikfeldern, die für die SDGs von Bedeutung sind, spielen die Kantone eine zentrale Rolle bei der Umsetzung der Agenda 2030 und der SDGs in der Schweiz. Bislang ist wenig darüber bekannt, ob und wie die Kantone die Agenda 2030 und die SDGs umsetzen und die damit verbundenen Herausforderungen und Chancen bewältigen. Daher wurde an der Universität Basel im Rahmen eines vom Schweizerischen Nationalfonds geförderten Forschungsprojekts eine Umfrage zum Stand der Umsetzung der Agenda 2030 und der SDGs in Kantonsverwaltungen durchgeführt. Das Ziel der Umfrage besteht darin, einen möglichst umfassenden Überblick über Bekanntheit, Stellenwert und Aktivitäten zur Umsetzung der Agenda 2030 und der SDGs bzw. entsprechender Nachhaltigkeitsthemen in kantonalen Verwaltungen zu gewinnen. Zudem wurde abgefragt, wie die Umsetzung der SDGs gestärkt werden kann. Die Online-Umfrage wurde zwischen Sommer und Herbst 2021 durchgeführt und richtete sich an alle kantonalen Amtsleiter*innen. Von den insgesamt 1003 angeschriebenen Verwaltungsstellen nahmen 397 teil (Antwortrate: 40%). Die Umfrage dokumentiert eine hohe Bekanntheit und Relevanz von Nachhaltigkeit und der SDGs. Die Hälfte der Amtsleiter*innen kennt die SDGs und fast alle Ämter (94%) geben an, das Nachhaltigkeitsthemen oder SDGs relevant sind. Insbesondere die SDGs 5 (Bildung), 12 (Nachhaltige/r Konsum und Produktion), 13 (Massnahmen zum Klimaschutz) sowie 17 (Partnerschaften zur Erreichung der Ziele) sind für die Arbeit der Ämter relevant. Die Verankerung von Nachhaltigkeit in übergeordneten Politikstrategien, aber auch die persönliche Motivation von Amtsleiter*innen sind wichtige Gründe dafür, dass die SDGs in der Arbeit der Ämter sichtbar sind. Antwortverweigerung stellt eine Bedrohung für die Gültigkeit von Schlussfolgerungen dar, die auf der Basis von Umfragedaten gezogen werden. Im allgemeinen werden hier zwei Gegenstrategien eingesetzt. Die erste Strategie besteht darin, den Anteil der Antwortverweigerer soweit wie möglich zu reduzieren, die zweite Strategie versucht eine statistische Fehlerkorrektur der Antwortverweigerung. Umfragen sind in der amtlichen Statistik, in den Sozialwissenschaften und in der Marktforschung in den Niederlanden immer noch an der Tagesordnung, und Interviewer stellen im Kampf gegen Antwortverweigerung einen wichtigen Faktor dar. Die Verfasser fragen nach der Einstellung von Interviewern zu Antwortverweigerung und zu deren eigener Rolle, wenn es darum geht, Menschen für ein Interview zu gewinnen. Statistics Netherlands hat ein Projekt zur Überarbeitung der fortlaufenden Untersuchung der Lebensverhältnisse (POLS) durchgeführt. In diesem Zusammenhang wurden auch Daten über die Interviewer erhoben. Es zeigt sich, dass die Einstellung der Interviewer und die Antwortquote korrelieren. Interviewer mit einer positiven Einstellung zu Strategien der Überzeugung von zu Befragenden weisen eine höhere Antwortquote auf. Hinsichtlich der von den Interviewern beschriebenen Verhaltensmuster "an der Haustür" ergeben sich keine Unterschiede. (ICEÜbers)
