Current approaches for understanding and analyzing religion in international politics insufficiently incorporate the role of ethics in the practices of religious actors. Primordialist approaches essentialize religion, instrumental approaches consider it to be an epiphenomenon, and cosmopolitan approaches a priori downgrade alternative ethical constructs as insufficiently universalist. An approach to religion that begins with a constitutive understanding of religious belief and economic, social, and political practice as outlined in Weber's Sociology of Religion, is more helpful. However, because Weber's method insufficiently addresses ethical intentionality, the 'neo-Weberian' approach I advance here incorporates the concepts of 'common good' and 'popular casuistry' into socio-historical contextualization. This approach provides a way to understand and theorize how religious adherents connect religious guidelines to moral action that avoids the essentialization of religion which is often characteristic of other perspectives. After the increasing criticism on the theory of secularisation during the last decades, post-secularisation has been consolidated as a new paradigm in the sociology of religion. However, an approach to sociological production on the subject reveals two basic lines of interpretation, one that emerges from social theory and another that makes use of post-secularisation as a descriptive category. This article focuses on the integration of both perspectives and their interaction within the post-secularisation paradigm. The relevance of this joint approach is based on both the reflections taken from the main works on post-secularisation and data from sociological analysis, including the author's research on the Spanish case of secularisation and data from the broader European context. The critical approach to secularisation and the challenge of plurality are the two main axes of study. Both categories will allow us to explore the interaction between "post-secular consciousness" and historical sociology, on the one hand, and between the normative recognition of plurality and the challenges of its sociological analysis, on the other. This tension between theory and sociological reality, which the theory of secularisation missed at a certain point in its development, is what enables the post-secularisation paradigm to limit the excesses of its predecessor in interpreting religious transformations in modernity. ; Tras la creciente crítica efectuada a la teoría de la secularización durante las últimas décadas, la postsecularización se ha consolidado como nuevo paradigma en sociología de la religión. Sin embargo, una aproximación a la producción sociológica sobre el tema revela dos líneas interpretativas básicas, aquella que emerge de la teoría social y la que efectúa un uso de la postsecularización como categoría descriptiva. El presente artículo apuesta por la integración de ambas perspectivas y de su interacción en el paradigma de la postsecularización. La pertinencia de esta aproximación conjunta será desarrollada a partir de las reflexiones extraídas de las principales obras sobre la postsecularización con los datos procedentes del análisis sociológico, tanto de la investigación del autor sobre el caso español de secularización como del más amplio contexto europeo. La aproximación crítica a la secularización y el reto de la pluralidad serán los dos ejes principales de la exploración. Ambas categorías nos permitirán indagar en la interacción entre "conciencia postsecular" y sociología histórica, de un lado, y entre el reconocimiento normativo de la pluralidad y los retos de su análisis sociológico, de otro. Esta tensión entre la teoría y la realidad sociológica, que la teoría de la secularización obvió en cierto punto de su desarrollo, es la que posibilita al paradigma de la postssecularización limitar los excesos de su predecesora a la hora de interpretar las transformaciones religiosas en la modernidad.

Elenktik ist die Lehre vom Gewissen des Menschen in seinem jeweiligen kulturellen und religiösen Kontext. Das individuelle Gewissen, das die Basis der emotionalen Intelligenz des Menschen bildet, stellt eine der elementarsten Bedingungen dar, ohne die er nicht fähig ist, mit anderen zusammen in einer funktionsfähigen Gemeinschaft zu leben. Nur ein angemessen geformtes Gewissen verleiht dem Menschen den Status eines sozialen Wesens. Davon handelt dieses Buch. Es stellt nicht nur dar, in welch unterschiedlicher Weise Menschen Verstöße gegen ethische Normen als "Sünde" werten und welche Rolle ihre Kultur oder gesellschaftliche Schicht dabei spielt, sondern geht auch der Frage nach, was hinter Amokläufen, Ehrenmorden und religiösem Fanatismus steckt, ob "Gewissensbisse" als Schuld, Scham oder Angst empfunden werden, wie verschiedene Prägungen des Gewissens zum Frieden mit sich selbst und dem eigenen gesellschaftlichen Umfeld führen, und was unter diesen Bedingungen "Buße" und "Vergebung" bedeuten. Ausführlich kommt zur Sprache, welche Autoritäten für ein individuelles Gewissen Bedeutung haben, und in welcher Weise ethische Normen Einfluss auf das Verstehen von "Recht" und "Ehre" in einer Gesellschaft nehmen. Der Autor bezieht ethnologische, psychologische, soziologische, pädagogische, theologische und viele andere Gesichtspunkte in seine Überlegungen ein und entwirft somit eine umfassende Theorie des Gewissens, mit deren Hilfe besonders auch das Europäern oft so unverständliche Verhalten von Menschen aus anderen Gesellschaftsordnungen, beispielsweise von Asylbewerbern, erklärt und verstanden werden kann.

Reading Hegel's1827 Lectures on the Philosophy of Religionalongside hisPhenomenology of Spirit, I argue that his vision for becoming a self-conscious subject—or seeing (oneself as) "spirit"—requires taking responsibility for the insight that every act of reason expresses an experience of sexual difference. It entails working to bring into being communities whose conceptions of gender and the absolute realize this idea.
