Advantages of the neoliberal economic paradigm include minimizing the intervention of the state & allowing maximum freedom of internal & international markets. Disadvantages include increased income inequality & poverty, exploitation by multinational firms, excessive individualism, & democratic instability. It is argued here that the disadvantages of neoliberalism strongly outweigh the advantages. It is concluded that an alternative economic model that provides for basic human needs, places the collective before individual needs, & promotes human development should be formulated. 14 References. Analyzes the establishment of an inclusive liberal democracy in South Africa. It is contended that the representation of the South African transition as a miracle rests on two common myths: nonracialism & the South Africa model. The 1994 elections revealed an electorate racially polarized, & the notion of the transfer of power in South Africa as unique is overdrawn. There are striking parallels between the transformation of South Africa & other cases in Africa where there was a transfer of power from a white minority to the African majority, most notably those of Kenya, Zimbabwe, & Namibia. 4 Tables. Liberal feminism (based on equality, the politicization of the private, & female participation in the public) & postliberal feminism (based on difference & the notion of a feminine ethic of caring) are outlined & their relationship to communitarianism is discussed. Three kinds of contact between feminism & communitarianism are identified: conflict, colonization, & compromise. Liberal feminism & communitarianism conflict over communitarianism's version of the ideal family, which seems to prefer traditional, discriminatory gender arrangements as the foundation of community. An example of colonization is communitarianism's interpretation of postliberal feminism's concept of a feminine ethic of caring as a community virtue. This could favor the status quo division of labor. Areas of compromise could be found through a critical analysis of communitarianism's social demands in relation to gender, but it is concluded that communitarianism would still remain a questionable ally for feminist philosophy. 24 References. WITH THE ASCENDENCE OF NEOLIBERALISM IN THE US AND THE COLLAPSE OF COMMUNISM ABROAD, WHAT POLITICAL PRINCIPLES RETAIN MEANING FOR GROUPS ON THE LEFT? THE AUTHOR OF THIS ARTICLE ARGUES THAT IN AN ERA OF NEW SOCIAL MOVEMENTS AND IDENTITY POLITICS, "SOCIALISM" SHOULD BE ABANDONED IN FAVOR OF "RADICAL DEMOCRACY."
