Although the identity of power wielders changes from year to year, we will not soon witness the emergence of a form of power accountable to ordinary Russian citizens. The state will remain detached and nonresponsive to society. It will remain a 'corporation' that, however wracked by internal struggles, basically looks after itself.
The present article seeks to discern the criteria or the quality of research, formulated and accepted within the scholarly community of the humanities. We argue that the scholars implicitly use these criteria opposing administrative evaluation. The analysis of these criteria revealed that they might be summarized in three broad categories – the novelty (originality, innovativeness) of the research; the excellence of the researcher (ability to conduct and describe the research); and the impact (academic as well as social-political). We argue that relevant criteria for the administrative evaluation of research in the humanities should draw on these perspectives.
This study investigated the participation of expert witnesses (psychological, psychiatric, and medical) in criminal cases regarding allegations of child sexual abuse in Sweden. All criminal cases (n = 648) from 1985, 1989, and 1992 were reviewed with regard to the participation of expert witnesses, their professional backgrounds, and conclusions. Logistic regression models were applied to the data to explore factors associated with expert witness participation, and factors associated with a conviction against the defendant's denial, respectively. The majority of psychological experts supported the abuse allegations. The use of expert witnesses for psychological issues decreased (25%, 25%, and 15% of the cases each year). The results provide a descriptive platform for psycholegal practices in child sexual abuse cases in Sweden.
